Geek Daily: 'Iron Man 2' Villain, 'Sgt Rock', Magneto & Deadpool

Lots of maddening hints in the news today -- I share them merely in order to tease you as they have me.
Like this one, for example -- Justin Theroux says he and Jon Favreau have now decided on a villain for Iron Man 2, and the announcement will be held "at some Comic-Con or something." [IGN]
Or this: Guy Ritchie has a lead in mind for Sgt. Rock, but he won't say who, except that it's no one from his past films. So you can cross Jason Statham, Mark Strong, Robert Downey Jr., and Gerard Butler off the "Names That Rumor-Mongerers Love" list. He did say the script is done, it will be set in WWII, and it will feature Easy Company. However, the biggest hurdle in getting it made is its budget which is "slightly intimidating." [MTV Splash Page]
David S. Goyer says the Master of Magnetism's origin movie is on hold until X-Men Origins: Wolverine comes out. If Wolverine is a success, then Magneto gets his origin movie. I think that seems unfair, don't you? [Superhero Hype]

Speaking of origin movies, can you believe a Deadpool spin-off has been in the works for five years? And Ryan Reynolds has been attached the entire time? Jeff Katz says plans began around Blade: Trinity: "Ryan [Reynolds], [David] Goyer and I on Blade: Trinity, we were trying to put together a deal at New Line for a Deadpool movie. We thought the rights were clear and not part of the X-Men universe, so Ryan could play the character and Goyer could write. I can't remember why - I think they wanted to do a Blade spin-off instead - but it didn't come together. But Ryan, to his credit, has remained obsessed with the character." Katz reiterated that Deadpool is indeed set up to have his own spin-off by the end of Wolverine ... but like Magneto, his fortunes rise and fall based on how the Old Canuckehead's film does. [MTV Splash Page]
David Goyer (wow, lots of him today) doesn't seem to think The Dark Knight was snubbed at the Golden Globes, he just continues to be amazed at the film's success: "I think it's going to get some Academy Award nominations. And not just for Heath and not just for technical. I hope Chris [Nolan] gets a nomination. You look at it and it's actually one of the best reviewed films of the year. I think it would be cool to see a comic book movie make some headway in the Academy." [Superhero Hype]

If what you say is true... The the mild trepidation I am feeling about Deadpool's look in the film is unfounded.
There is no way they'd keep him look as pretty as Ryan for a spin off series. I mean, it's perfect casting and all but they'd just have to make sure he gets his trademark look for a stand-alone film.... Right?
Yeah... It's unfounded. I'm sure he will go through the transformation while still in Weapon X. I'm just being paranoid.

Katz said in the same interview that they're really trying to follow the Marvel pattern when it comes to "seeding" characters in the films...so I would hope that includes mutilating Deadpool before his origin film!
Considering how they're keeping him under wraps, I kind of think SOMETHING must happen in the course of the film -- it reminds me of how Two-Face was handled pre Dark Knight, you know?
I'm with you on Sabretooth too, by the way. I didn't get a chance to reply to your earlier comment, but I really do hope there's some bridge between his Wolverine look, and his X-Men self...it would be cool if Wolverine ended with Creed being re-brainwashed or something.

That's a good point... They are playing him pretty close to the chest and it's certainly not because he is only a minor part of the film. They wouldn't be talking spin-offs if that were the case. And seriously they have Wade and the Weapon X program together in one movie... I don't think they would waste the opportunity just so they can keep a recognizable face on camera.
Plus, Ryan's excitement about the character has been obvious for a while; I imagine he wants to do it as much justice as any other fan. He strikes me as the type of cat who would have a blast under all that latex.
As for Sabertooth. It sounds pretty obvious when you put it like that. He is clearly not going to have a happy ending but they can't just kill him off either. On top of that his end and the film's end need to coincide, given his role as the main antagonist and all...
I bet you are right, I bet it ends with some dark days for Sabertooth... Hell, they may even have a surprise little Magneto cameo at the end. Wouldn't that be a treat?

Jason Statham is a dead ringer for Sgt Rock. How about Bruce Willis?
