Tom Cruise to Reprise 'Thunder's' Les Grossman?
Filed under: Comedy, RumorMonger, Remakes and Sequels
He may truly suck at making himself into a believable German, but Tom Cruise did something right when he signed on for Tropic Thunder. The gig got him his first raves in eons, a Golden Globe nomination, and now maybe a feature film?E Online talked with Cruise, who says Grossman is far from cinematic history. "I've talked about doing different videos with the character. I've started working with Ben [Stiller] on it, and we've kind of talked about different things to do." Right now, they're just looking for the free time to make this a reality. Cruise then went on to say that he wouldn't rule out a feature film, but he has to talk to Stiller first.
It'd probably be wise not to hold our breaths. Stiller has been adding on the projects like mad lately, so unless there's some A+ scheduling, I bet this will take a while or never come to fruition. But more importantly: should it? I really enjoyed Tom in Tropic Thunder, Grossman was great, but I'm not sure I'd want to see a full film with him. To me, it wasn't so much the character, but Cruise having some fun. I'd much rather see a fun film written for Cruise that goes somewhere new, while maintaining that sense of self-deprecation. How about you?

I love all of the moments with Cruise, but as you said, I only truly enjoyed it because it WAS Cruise. Which is perfectly fine for such a small part. But I would not be interested in a feature film starring this character.

Tom Cruise's performance in Tropic Thunder has to be the most overrated performance of the decade. Everytime he was on screen I wanted to gouge my eyes out. They gave him too much screen time and his dance at the end was terrifying. I still can't believe he was nominated for a Golden Globe. This is a sign that the world is soon coming to an end.

Tom Cruise channeling Harvey Weinstein was great! The scene where he was threatening the kidnapers with scorched earth was so funny I taped it and sent it out on voice mail!

He doesn't deserve this much praise praise for putting on a fatsuit and yelling. Had it been a single-scene cameo, it would have been fine. Even a single scene and the dance scene at the end. But they stretched the joke too far. I though it hurt the movie more than it helped. This isn't really Tom Cruise's fault, but Ben Stiller should have trusted that the rest of his cast was talented enough to keep people entertained.
It did, inadvertently, help highlight how fantastic Robert Downey jr. was. He really did become that character. I was always very aware that it was Tom Cruise in a fatsuit.
