Confirmed: Chris Weitz Directing 'Twilight' Sequel (aka 'New Moon')

Well, the rumors were true, and Summit Entertainment has confirmed that Golden Compass director Chris Weitz will indeed direct New Moon, the follow-up to this year's biggest teen-vamp flick, Twilight. It's important to note that nowhere in the press release does it mention Eclipse, which means the two sequels probably won't be shot at the same time. A release date for New Moon was not mentioned, only that the film will arrive in late 2009 or early 2010. Check out the official press release below:Summit Entertainment announced today that filmmaker Chris Weitz has been hired to direct the second film in the studio's TWILIGHT film franchise. The film, NEW MOON, is based on the second book in author Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster book series. The announcement was made by Erik Feig, Summit's President of Production.
Weitz, an Acadamy Award®-nominated writer, director and producer, has a proven track record working with a broad range of material dealing with youth-oriented characters, fantasy and action. As such, he has the potential to bring alive in NEW MOON the dimensions and depth that fans will demand in the next installment.
Feig stated, "We love Stephenie Meyer's fantastic TWILIGHT series. Thinking long and hard about how to turn NEW MOON into the amazing movie we know it will be, and working with Stephenie Meyer to find the right candidate, we are thrilled to announce Chris Weitz as director of the film. Chris very much understands the world of NEW MOON and has the skill set required to bring the book to glorious life as a movie. We think he will be an excellent steward of Stephenie Meyer's vision."
"I am honored to have been entrusted with shepherding NEW MOON from the page to the screen," said Weitz. "The extraordinary world that Stephenie has created has millions of fans, and it will be my duty to protect on their behalf the characters, themes and story they love. This is not a task to be taken lightly, and I will put every effort into realizing a beautiful film to stand alongside a beautiful book."
Weitz previously penned ABOUT A BOY, which led to an Academy Award Nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2002, and adapted and directed THE GOLDEN COMPASS (2007), which was nominated for two Academy Awards and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Additionally, Weitz co-wrote the 1998 animated film ANTZ and went on to produce the major box office success AMERICAN PIE and executive produced the film's two theatrical sequels. Weitz also produced IN GOOD COMPANY starring Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace and executive produced AMERICAN DREAMZ starring Hugh Grant, Dennis Quaid and Mandy Moore.
In NEW MOON, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black. Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested. Production on NEW MOON is scheduled to begin in the coming months and the studio is planning to release the film towards the end of 2009 or early 2010.

Bullshit detected.
Even though I am not interested in this movie at all, it appears they did indeed decide to fuel the sexism rumor fire.

This Twilight phenomena is pretty amazing. It’s always tough to turn a popular series of books into a popular movie franchise. There are so many great opportunities available for screenwriters and with just a little web surfing, they are easy to find. When trying to perfect a screenplay (if that’s even possible) it’s invaluable to have feedback on your script instead of just working in a vacuum. For those just starting out, that can be a tough thing to find. There are some film schools that offer such services. One that I found is Film Connection, http://www.film-connection.com/screenwriting_sub.html They offer one on one mentoring and their coure is available all over the US and Canada.

According to one studio exec: “You’d have to have a very high standard for art, hate the movie business, and hate money to walk off this sequel.” So with Weitz, they get the hack they wanted! The movie is doomed, indeed, to not satisfy any "standard for art." Mabye it's a good thing Taylor Lautner might be able to skip out on this dud. (Although the obvious move would be to have Taylor play Jacob pre-werewolf and Steven Strait play Jacob post-werewolf. But I don't want either of those stellar actors sullied by Weitz. They should play brothers in a Catherine Hardwicke movie.)

makes sense...you needed someone that could work with visual affects better, being that the next book is loaded with more action,. Say what you want but the guy has more cred, and i think he will handle this movie brilliantly. He has worked with adaptations before and movies that involve the demograph that this is targeting, not to mention young actors.
Hardwickes style just isn't good for the full series. The action scenes were choppy and were not fluid and it really showed her lack of knowledge on how to handle those particular scenes. Also, does no one out there know that Meyers worked closely with Hardwicke so that her vision was represented perfectly! She will be doing the same on all the adaptations, so as long as that is happening, everything is still golden and going to work out perfectly. On another note though, i really hate the people who say they totally hate anything to do with TWILIGHT, yet feel the need to chime in on what they think or feel about the series, as if they have any idea what Twilight is. Grow up,open your mind, and stop being so bitter!

They blew it in Twilight by not including the real full meadow scene and when he played Bella's lullaby. The depth of their relationship was completely absent. They need to find a way to include those in New Moon possibly as if Bella was remembering them just to keep Edward in the picture and fill out the story line. Those scenes are needed to understand the romance between them that was left out in the first movie.
If it takes 3 - 4 hours let it be done.

I absolutely agree with you. They need to keep Edward in "new Moon" as much as possible-at least showing his anguish and how he is dealing with the separation. the romance is such an integral part of the series and it was missing so much in twilight.

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH BOTH OF YOU! I WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTED IN THE LACK OF PASSION AND ROMANCE AND THE WHOLE STORY LINE IN THE TWILIGHT MOVIE. I AM A HUGE FAN OF HER BOOKS AND I READ ALL OF THEM IN JUST 2 WEEKS. I WANT TO FEEL WHAT I FELT WHILE READING THE BOOKS, WHILE WATCHING THE MOVIE! THE ROMANCE WAS LACKING IN THE MAIN CHARACTERS. I'M WILLING TO SIT THROUGH A 4 HOUR MOVIE IF IT MEANS THAT THE MOVIE WILL DO THE BOOK JUSTICE!

i honestly dont believe that it really matters who directs the new moon film, as long as they have a passion to keep it as close to the book as possible. i found the film twilight throughly fantastic and if i could get my friends to come with me again and again to see it, then i would!!!!
also whats this going round that theyre not going to keep the same actor for jacob? that would be the stupidest thing ever if they put in a different actor.i mean there is already a fanbase for this actor as jacob so why change a good thing?
the only problem i had was that i hadnt finished twilight when i went to see the movie (lol).
i also liked the bad guys too, which i dont normally do.i also found the fact that the characters' faces didnt turn ugly buffy style, made it a little more believable and kept me interested.
i really do hope that the director keeps as close to the book as possible because theres a lot in there and as a viewer, i want to see as much as possible, to understand the character.although im reading the book, i know whats going on.but you need to keep the details in for the people who havent had chance to read the book or who arent avid readers.
plus i find that some books made to films, lack major pieces that make the story what it is, such as harry potter and the order of the phoenix.they missed a whole section of the ron weasley and the quidditch.the film kind of lacked what the book had which was the ron action, which made the films more fuller due to the addititon of some lighthearted moments.it made it a little bit boring compared to the fourth one, harry potter and the goblet or fire which i thought was brilliant!
so MR DIRECTOR, please leave in all the characters, dont swap the actors who play them, and make it just as good as twilight which im going to drag my friend to with bribes of popcorn and munchies!!!!
thanks stephanie meyer for some books that will actually rival harry potter!nice one!!!!!

WHY is it that people say its sexist to have him?

No.

I AM SO DISAPPOINTED THAT TAYLOR WILL BE RETURNING AS JACOB BLACK! I WAS HOPING THAT THEY WOULD ACTUALLY SEEK OUT AN NATIVE AMERICAN TO PLAY THE PART. EDDIE SPEARS WOULD HAVE BEEN A PERFECT CANDIDATE FOR THIS FILM. I'M SORRY BUT ALL I SEE IS A BABY FACE BOY WHEN I SEE TAYLOR. NOT WHAT THE CHARACTER CALLS FOR IN THE SECOND BOOK. CASTING PEOPLE: DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND FIND QUALIFIED ACTORS FOR THIS ROLE!

Oracle,Cynthis and Lois,
you are all so right!I was expecting the movie to be much more romantic and passionate between Edward and Bella. The meadow scene was massacred and where was the kiss against the jeep before the game? This is meant to be about 'toe curling 'and 'butterflies in the tummy' romance!! I hope Chris Weitz sticks to the books storyline, but in saying that,I am in agreeance with Lois that there should be more of an emphasis on Edwards loss and how the family are coping as opposed to half the book about the relationship between Jacob and Bella.
