Box Office: Pounds, Tales and Yes Men
America loves a good alien invasion apparently, so the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still took top honors. Holdovers from previous weeks filled out the rest of the top five with last week's two other big releases, Nothing Like the Holidays and Delgo, respectively taking seventh and eighteenth (eek!) place. Here's the top five:
1. The Day the Earth Stood Still: $30.4 million
2. Four Christmases: $13 million
3. Twilight: $7.9 million
4. Bolt: $7.4 million
5. Australia: $4.1 million
Three new ones this week featuring drama, laughs and something for the kids.
Seven Pounds
What's It All About: Will Smith plays Ben Thomas, an IRS agent who after a tragic accident seeks redemption through interaction with seven strangers.
Why It Might Do Well: In addition to Smith in the lead, the cast also includes Woody Harrelson and Rosario Dawson, and there's some decent buzz.
Why It Might Not Do Well: People rarely seek out an IRS agent.
Number of Theaters: 2,600
Prediction: $22 million
The Tale of Despereaux
What's It All About: Animated feature about a mouse with a big heart and even bigger ears who is banished by his own people and befriends a princess.
Why It Might Do Well: Bolt and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa have pretty much run their course and with Christmas almost here there's room for an animated family feature.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Rottentomatoes.com is giving this one a lackluster 20%.
Number of Theaters: 3,000
Prediction: $12 million
Yes Man
What's It All About: Comedy starring Jim Carrey as a guy who has a negative attitude, but a self-help course teaches him to say yes to anything and everything.
Why It Might Do Well: It's back to Carrey's trademark broad physical comedy here, and when he's on his game he does it well.
Why It Might Not Do Well: Critics don't seem fond of this one, but I still think this is next week's #1.
Number of Theaters: 3,400
Prediction: $28 million
Here's what I think next week's top five will look like:
1. Yes Man
2. Seven Pounds
3. The Tale of Despereaux
4. The Day the Earth Stood Still
5. Four Christmases
Congratulations to VP (is that you Mr. Cheney?) for pulling the week's only perfect score. Here's how everyone did:

Tale of desperaux
Day the earth stood still
Four chirastmases
even though it's very likely that if 7 pounds could be at number one instead of yes man because looking at his last like 5 films let's face it Will smith is a money magnet for movies.
