Warner Bros' Alan Horn Talks Green Lantern, Dark Knight, & Superman
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Warner Brothers, RumorMonger, Fandom, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
First, dear readers, let me get a little rant off my chest -- why can't the mainstream media run the quotes from tireless movie sites like Collider instead of preposterous casting rumors? Sure, it's fun and harmless, but they embed themselves into the public consciousness to the point that you'll be hearing "Eddie Murphy is going to be the Riddler!" at your watercooler for months. But this is real Batman news! Now, let's read that news, directly from Warner Bros' president Alan Horn, who emphasized again that Batman is taking a break. "We've been talking to Chris Nolan and what we have to do is get him in the right place and have him tell us what he thinks the notion might be for a great story, but Chris did a great job and we'd love to have him come back and do another one ... The story is everything and we are very respectful of Chris. We have a wonderful relationship with him and we are going to be respectful of his timing and we want to get it right. Also, I think the fans expect that – they want us to make a terrific movie – we have to give them another great movie."
So, with Batman on hiatus, what DC hero might be next? Why, he's up there in the right-hand corner. "[Green Lantern is] on the runway. Hasn't taken off yet, but we're close. I think Green Lantern is probably the best guess but I can't promise it at this moment." Superman and Justice League, however, are a lot further away. Warners is "anxious" to bring Supes back, but there's no timeline for his return except "probably in the next couple of years." And despite what George Miller says about Justice League's status, the answer on that is: "Not yet."
There's the Warners-DC update. I'm anxiously awaiting Green Lantern news -- I can't wait to talk about a new DC hero, and let sleeping Nolans lie.

This still will not kill the batman rumors. Hopefully Nolan will move on to his next film and things will calm down a bit.

I haven't been terribly interested in a Green Lantern movie, but I wasn't interested in Iron Man before Robert Downey Jr., and that movie was spectacular. And the more I think about it, I think I would rather a Green Lantern movie than a reboot of a reboot of Superman.

If they are serious about The green Lantern, I would seriously consider this guy. CRAFTY ST. JAMES He is the GL! Whether, HAL or Kyle, Crafty has put in the 10,000 hours of research, written his own GL screenplay and has directed his own films! Non GL! ;) http://www.myspace.com/manifestgreen

So many emotions, so little comment space.
First and foremost. I am with Nolan on this one. I loved both Begins and TDK more then any other depiction of the Caped Crusader before them but I think it's time to take a breath. This third act is going to be a tough one and I have the patience to let them get it right. Also, Wayne is hogging the limelight a bit here. There are other characters that deserve WB's attention and they need to start focusing on them.
Green Lantern for example... This character has SO much screen potential right now. In this age of flawless VFX, the story could be done some major justice if they think big enough. I imagine the road they take will follow one man, probably Hal Jordan but the potential is there to create an epic series to rival even Star Wars. The Corps should get screen time and they should go BIG with it. I get giddy thinking about the set designs, costume designs and character designs... If they don't shy away from the more sci-fi aspects of the story, we could be in for one hell of an exhilarating ride.
Oh... And as for Hal Jordan... *cough* Nathan Fillion *cough*
Damn this winter season... Ok, Moving on.
I love Superheroes. I love them all. I am elated that they have become a genre unto themselves and we are getting the chance to see them all on the big screen... But deep down, despite a number of shifting "Favorites" over the years, the one man I keep coming back to, the one character that brings out the boyhood joy in me is the original.
I'm of course talking about Superman.
I was just barely old enough to remember seeing Chris Reeves in the Theater; I had a huge collection of the comics as a kid, the underoos, the action figures... All of it. Hell, I even share the man's name. My own father chose it for me, as he was also a fan, going back into his own youth. So I think that might be part of it, I lost him quite a few years ago and our shared love for Kal-El is something that has stuck with me. So it affects me a lot more when things go wrong with this particular franchise. I just want to see Superman, I don't care if he is fighting a Supervillain or lifting stuff over his head for two hours, I just want to see him and I want to believe he can fly. So this is killing me. Every time I hear Singer stutter about the future of the series, every time I hear that Brandon Routh might be recast, every time this bizarre Justice League film starts and stops... It just plays with my emotions and that kid inside me gets all worked up over it. I personally loved Returns and despite the awkward position Jason has put the story in, I'd love nothing more then to see it continue. But at the same time, I'm also intrigued by Mark Millar's epic ideas... So what I am trying to say is... I hate hearing "A couple more years" coming out of Horn's mouth. If you are going to do it. DO IT. Reboot him, recast him, retell the damn origin for all I care but give us Superman already. There is no story they couldn't tell, they have barely touched the universe outside of Lex's plans for domination and I have great difficulty believing it's really this complicated. Returns didn't flop, people are going hate on everything you do so stop listening to them and just do the fans some justice. Give us our Superman. You do it right, give him the chance to really show us what those powers can do and I promise it will turn a profit. I mean. For god's sake, it's Superman! Lois was wrong, the world does need him, no matter how cynical we get we will always need him. That was the whole point.
That's all I really wanted to say. I should get some work done...

I want to know if the GL movie will be with Hal Jordan or John John Stewart. I really want to see an African American Superhero
and see how they would have there shown on screen. The only Superhero I can think of that was an African American was Hancock and He was not really even a superhero.
I have always liked the story of John Stewart more. But if it is the Hal version of Parallax that would be cool to see.
Also I wonder if Warner Brothers would ever make an outsiders movie. That would be cool to see on screen too.
Green Arrow would also be cool to see. There are so many great DC characters that it really is weird that there has been so few movies of the different DC characters.

I imagine we can chalk that up to Warner Bros. being the only studio that produces DC films... Given that they own the company and all. It's imagine it's tough for them to keep up with Marvel, given all the different companies that have purchaced the rights to various Marvel characters, while WB has to go it alone and mantain hundreds of other non hero related properties.
As for African American Superheroes... Does Blade not do it for you? What about Storm? She played a prominent role in the X-men series, Spawn had a film, even if it was mired under the infamous PG-13 banner. Same goes for Steel. (he needs to show up again in a Death of Superman Saga) Rhodey is about to get his own in Iron Man 2, Nick Fury is going to play a part in the Avengers, not to mention Luke Cage and Black Panther are both inching toward getting their own films...
Oh... And don't forget the best of them all.. Blank Man. Now he kicked some serious ass.
Anyhow, I could dig seing John Stewart get some screen time but I think I'd like to see them go really bold and give him his own film, on top of Hal and Kyle. If they made a trilogy of films, each focusing on one of those three but featuring the other two as well.. That would be amazing to see.

I agree with you Joe and would like to see a African American hero as the GL. I think Common would be a good choice as GL. Another choices could be Anthony Mackie who start in We Are Marshall and Haven. Mackie have been in some bad movies but he is a good actor. Also they could look at 2 people from The Wire tv show Wood Harris and Jamie Hector (played Marlo in The Wire). I don't see Hector as the GL but I think he could be the villian in the movie. I liked Hector performance in The Wire but also in Heroes as Knox. I was mad when they killed him off the show.
The best fit for the GL if he was younger would be Lawerence Fishburne.

I don't consider Blade or Spawn a super hero. Blade is in the same genre as the characters in Underworld and Resident Evil whom I don't see as superheroes. There have been African American superheroes in supporting roles or on a ensemble cast (ie X-Men) but I would like to see a African American superhero as the headliner (ie like Batman, Superman, Iron Man). I can't see Black Panther getting a film anytime in the near future because Captian American, Thor, The Avengers, and Iron Man 2 have to get their film first. I think the best chance is with GL or go with the X-Men Origins route and do a Storm Orgins but not with Hallie.

Ok. That's your take and you made effort to point that out but come on dude... Of course Blade and Spawn are superheroes. Just because they are combining Heroics with Horror doesn't disqualify them.
Blade has powers beyond that of a mere mortal and he wears and cool suit and uses cool gadgets to fight evil.
Sounds like a Superhero to me... And the same can be said of Spawn. Having an unconventional origin and a slightly varied rogues gallery shouldn't disqualify them. They are comic book heroes of the Super powered variety. Hell, Spawn even adheres to the Cape Code.
Credit where it is due, man.
Besides, it's not the same as Underworld or Resident Evil at all. The Vampires in the former are just in a bureaucratic and selfish war and everyone in the RE films are really just fighting for survival in another decidedly war themed environment. That's not the same as suiting up and protecting innocent lives from criminals and/or monsters.

How about Diana getting her own movie already? Wonder Woman people... why is this so difficult? Amazon Warriors... Paradise Island... Massive Action... That is a movie that writes itself.
As Joss Whedon speaks more and more about his experience with WB working on the failed Wonder Woman movie, it seems to me as if he wanted to do a story that focused on her internal struggles to be this perfect ambassador and perfect woman while also being a superhero... That sounds like a take on the character that would fit in the same universe as Nolan's Batman. Just at the time they didn't know that's the formula for success. Diana doesn't have to be dark but she can be more real.
I saw a lot of stories where people like Neil Gaiman wanted to deal with the original creator's S&M subtext and add that into the modernization of the character. I'd love to see her use her sexuality as a weapon to disarm men, or deal with the subjugation of women in the Middle East or just be acknowledged as pretty much the second most powerful hero on the planet.
Green Lantern can happen at some point down the line along with the Green Arrow and Flash movies. Wonder Woman is what should be on the slate right now. Superman... they can wait for a while with him... his marketability isn't going anywhere. If they make even a remotely watchable flick they can easily get about 300 mil domestic. With the whole wonder-who.com deal and The Avengers breathing down their necks DC needs to get going.
If I was DC I'd beg Whedon to come back... have him talk to the Nolan brothers and get a feel for how to introduce Diana into that same DC world (maybe talk to Bale about dropping in to say hello). Then let him go finish his take on the character and get filming laid out. If they got on it now they could have a film ready in time to compete with Iron Man 2 and Captain America.

I am sorry to have brought up such a hot topic.
I did forget about Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury but is He getting his own movie or is it just for the Avengers.
Also Storm was never shown the way she was shown in the comics. Plus Hallie Berry never fit with who Storm is.
I would have loved to have seen Will Smith play John Stewart but after Hancock I wonder if He would ever play another Superhero.
I do remember Blade being good but I was never a Spawn fan
I was not trying to start a fight or any thing I was just thinking there are not that many African American Superheros and I always like JS as GL. So sorry about that.
I do agree with you seeing as Warner Brothers has the rights to the DC movies it will be hard to see many of the different characters. I so wish WB would give either DC there own studio to make DC movies or License out the DC rights so there would be more DC films.
