Update: James Cameron Eying 'Forbidden Planet' Sequel/Prequel?
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Fandom, Remakes and Sequels
UPDATE: Both IESB and Latino Review are reporting that James Cameron is potentially interested in tackling this Forbidden Planet sequel/remake, which both sites report is kinda like a prequel and a sequel. They claim the current script follows "the never-before revealed tale of the first ship, the Bellerophon" and that if the first film rocks out, they have the ingredients for a trilogy. In said trilogy, they'd eventually make their way back to the events of the original Forbidden Planet, which told the story of a second ship that went searching for the Bellerophon after it went missing. Check out both sites for more info, and our latest post on Forbidden Planet (with comments from writer J. Michael Straczynski) is below. What do you think: Is James Cameron the man for this job?

The last time we heard from J. Michael Straczynski about his remake-but-not-really of The Forbidden Planet, it ended up being a lot of misquotes that the screenwriter quickly refuted. MTV caught up with him this week, and he explained his take on the classic sci-fi film: "I've always wanted to do something involving Forbidden Planet. It's my favorite science-fiction film of all time. I've watched the rights go from one company to the next. I heard that the rights at Dreamworks were about to expire and I went to Joel Silver and said I think if you move quickly you can grab it and I can write it. And he did. It's the dream of a lifetime to play in that universe."
While he remained relatively tight-lipped on the plot, Straczynski was careful to point out what it isn't. "I told Joel [Silver] this is how you do Forbidden Planet without pissing on the original that no one has ever thought of. When I told [the idea] to him, his eyes lit up. It's not a remake. It's not a reimagining. It's not exactly a prequel. You'll have to see it. It's something that no one has thought of when it comes to this storyline."
To that end, he's researching astrophysics, A.I., and planetary geology to create a scientifically accurate Krell backstory -- none of which will be stylishly retro. "At the time it was made it was cutting edge ...People that went to see that film saw things they had never seen before. What we have to do now is have this one be as innovative now as the original was then."
Like most of you, I wasn't particularly excited about a Forbidden Planet remake, but I do love the idea of an original story that explores the world and mythology of the film. I don't think it's betraying or copying a classic to play around with its universe. But maybe I'm way off on that -- thoughts?

Ooooh Boy, here we go again.... I trust that James Cameron will NOT f--k up any new "Forbidden Planet" Sequel/prequel that he might make, like they did with the disasterous remake of ''The Day the Earth Stood Still.'' Here is another example of an excellent & great early sci-fi movie that it would be devastating to see Fouled like Keanu Reeves et.,al. did to the Sci-fi genre in this, the year of my greatest disappointment......2008. What were those people thinking? Or maybe they weren't thinking at all. Come on James Cameron, Make another spectacular, like the Abyss or Titanic. We deserve a great movie after the HUGE disappointment of TDTESS.

This seminal film influenced me enough to create a new type of music based on Forbidden Planet and its contemporaries. I invite all of you "planet" fans to listen to samples at CBC radio3. In particular, you should find the track called The Final Decade on myspace and fast forward in approx 3 mins for my reworked homage to the original Forbidden Planet sound track.
Please drop me a line anytime with your comments.

Let's see, James Cameron does a movie every ten years, that would mean the trilogy would be done by the time I am 65, yeah, that sounds just swell.

I am still un-sure about this. I mean Forbidden Planet is not some graphic novel/comic book that is well known like all the current comic book movies out there. I think that this COULD be cool if it does look more at the Krell and not try to re-make the original movie. If Cameron is signed on for all the new movies that could be good but if he only does the first one then it will be a disaster.

leave the classics alone, that;s all I can say. I'm getting sick of hearing about remakes of classic films, which is a stupid idea because the people behind it can't think of anything new. sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a jerk but its like, why would i want to spend 8 or 9 dollars to see someone else's interpretation of a classic film. it they're going to do a remake, do ones of the smaller unknown films or of a horror movie or something. that's all its good for. I mean, remember Psycho, and i haven't even seen that movie yet
