Has Michael Cera Arrested Development on Big-Screen Bluths?
It never sounded like it could really happen... Rabid television fans always try to push for spin-offs and big-screen movies, but it's usually futile, especially when the show has been canceled. But then news started to pour in that Arrested Development was actually going to charm audiences once again. We were going to get more of the Bluth family! But it seems development has hit a snag. Fancast reports that ONE person is holding out. That's right -- eight have signed on to reprise their roles, but one hasn't jumped on-board yet. During a recent interview, creator Mitchell Hurwitz was asked about the rumors that Will Arnett and Michael Cera hadn't signed on yet. He said: "I don't want to talk about who is holding out right now because we might still work that out and I don't want to pressure anyone through the press. Although I will say that Will Arnett is gung-ho, so there's a big clue!"
The only way this statement makes sense is if Cera isn't the one who hasn't signed on yet, or if he really does want to pressure the young star into rejoining the cast. If Cera is the guy and won't sign on, and it's not for scheduling reasons, methinks it would be a big mistake. Now, when Arrested fans are finally getting more, is not the time to start worrying about typecasting. But what say you? Can the Bluths survive without George Michael?

Give the kid a nice offer and ask him to come on board. If he can't (or won't), you make the movie anyway, and you make his character's absence a running gag throughout the movie. Period.
Maeby: "Hey, where's George Michael?"
Michael: "Aw, we couldn't afford him, er, his plane fare home."
Cera's hilarious, but he's just one piece of a stellar ensemble.

I would see the movie just for that dialog exchange.

Make it regardless of his involvement. I don't think he's necessary by any means, although it would be a shame... And he'll lose my support in other roles

I don't think Cera should bother since nobody gives a rats ass about Arrested Development, even more so outside the US. It'd probably do worse than Serenity at the BO.

Didn't SFX name Serenity the best sci-fi film? Isn't SFX a british magazine? And didn't it come in first at the box office in the UK?

Are British people not allowed to like sci-fi movies? I can tell you more of us will have heard of Firefly/Serenity than Arrested Development, and it still only managed $13m outside the US.
Topping the UK box office is about as hard as getting a #1 single - not hard at all.

None of us are investing in the film, so what do we care how much it brings in at the B.O.?
The only reason we would give a damn about that is how it would relate to a possible sequel. I'll take as much AD as I can get, but I'm not gonna be greedy. I'll settle for one movie first. Anything more than that is gravy.
I don't care how much it makes opening weekend. I just know they'll have $10 from me.

I always thought it was ludicrous when people would say Cera is the one holding out because, well, why would he? But if this is true, it's really a kick to the groin for AD fans.
The dude should be grateful to have a chance to return to this character. After all, he's continued to play him in every film since the show's cancellation.

I think they can do the movie without him, but I think he will be missed. I am just stunned at the idea that he would do this to the fans of the show who have certainly supported him since the show was canceled - this was his big break, and it seemed like he was as supportive of the show as the rest of us die-hard fans are.

I'm really saddened to hear that, but in all honesty I am more excited about the reappearance of Buster Bluth.

George Michael should spend the whole movie sulking in his bedroom because Maeby rejects his advances. Everytime someone is about to enter the room they get distracted for some stupid reason. At the end of the movie they finally get into the room only to find a ransom note.

Did anybody else have a really hard time making sense of the title of this post? Anyways, I only recently started watching the show on Hulu and finished the first season but I say just make it without him if he won't sign on. His character kinda annoys me anyways and with the rest of the cast I don't think it would be as big of a loss as some people think. But as I said before I've only seen the first season.

Frankly -- and I'm speaking as a huge fan of the show -- I don't want to see a movie version of "Arrested Development." The pacing, the writing, the acting, it's all pitch perfect for television. And I really can't fathom how they can replicate the best parts of the show -- namely the awkwardness -- without benefit of commercial breaks. So I'm glad the movie's stalled out. Let it be.

I say make the movie without him... if he doesn't want to do it. But I love George Michael, and it's quite disappointing that Michael Cera might not reprise that role.
