Discuss: The Comedies of 2009

With the R-rated comedy becoming one of the hottest trends of the past couple years (thanks, in part, to a dude named Judd Apatow), we're starting to see a bunch more creative, down-to-earth (albeit foul-mouthed) comedies hit theaters -- with some, like Tropic Thunder, Burn After Reading and Knocked Up, fighting for awards consideration. But what will 2009 bring? Are we on a similar path as both 2007 and 2008, or will the new year bring back the boring, familiar plot threads and idiotic characters? Here's what we're looking at:
*Film(s) to watch that month
++Apatow involvement
# Best comedy of the year
January: Bride Wars, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, New in Town (Grade: C-)
February: *++Fanboys, He's Just Not That Into You, Pink Panther 2, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Miss February, Fired Up, *Youth in Revolt (Grade: B)
March: All About Steve, *I Love You, Man, This Side of the Truth, The Accidental Husband, Adventureland, The Janky Promoters, *Monsters vs. Aliens (Grade: A-)
April: The Ugly Truth, *Observe and Report, 17 Again (Grade: B+)
May: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, My Life in Ruins, Next Day Air, *Bruno, Night at the Museum 2, *Up (Grade: B)
June: Land of the Lost, The Hangover, *++Year One (Grade: B+)
July: Ice Age 3, *I Love You Beth Cooper, 500 Days of Summer, G-Force, *++#Funny People, *They Came from Upstairs (Grade: A)
August: Julie & Julia, *Shorts, Dance Flick, Post Grad, Max's Mardi Gras (Grade: C)
September: *Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Grade: B)
October: *Toy Story (3-D), Zombieland (Grade: B)
November: Tooth Fairy, *The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Three Stooges, Old Dogs (Grade: B)
December: Alvin and the Chipmunks 2, *The Princess and the Frog (Grade: B)
So based on early buzz, trailers and so forth, I'd say the best months for comedy in 2009 will be March and July. What do you think about the upcoming slate, and which comedies are you looking forward to the most?

I'm liking the looks of March and July as well.
I Love You Man, Adventureland, Monsters vs. Aliens all look hilarious, as do pretty much all of the ones coming in July.
I also can't wait to see Up!

It's good to see someone picking Funny People to be the number 1 comedy of the year. It doesn't seem like a lot of 2009 anticipated movies lists have Funny People listed in it.

My List:
Youth In Revolt
I Love You, Man
Observe & Report
Bruno
Up
The Hangover
Year One
Funny People
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
My most anticipated comedy is definitely "Funny People". With it's cast (not just the leads, but all the stand-ups too), it's director, and it's plot mixing drama with the comedy, I think it has the possibility of going down as a comedy classic, and this is coming from a guy who doesn't even like Adam Sandler.

Also, I have very high hopes for "I Love You Man", based on early reviews and my undying love for Jason Segel and Paul Rudd.

The months you all gave A’s to don’t look that interesting to me. However, the movies I’m looking forward to are:
January’s - Bride Wars and Paul Blart: Mall Cop
February’s - He's Just Not That Into You
April’s - 17 Again and Traveling, but Traveling is not a comedy it’s a drama
May’s - Night at the Museum 2
July’s - Funny People (maybe?)
I can't wait for those to come out.

Well, technically, there is a little Apatow involvement with Fanboys...

This Side of the Truth is going to be the best comedy of the year for sure. Personally I think this is going to be the year that Apatow and Co. trip up, so I don't think it's appropriate to just assume that their films will be the best of the year. Funny People has great prospects, but I think it will come out just above average. This Side of the Truth, however, will sideswipe people, that is if it is marketed and advertised well enough to mainstream audiences.

Funny People isn't going to be great. I strongly dislike these Judd Apatow films that are halfway between comedy and drama, which neither make me laugh nor make me emotional. In fact, I prefer Adam Sandler's regular fare. It is usually incredibly silly, but funny. That is all I really want in a comedy.

This Side of the Truth could be a sleeper, but I don't think Funny People will be just above average. I thought there were some hilarious moments in the script that could end up being made even funnier in the final product, not to mention all the improvisations that will occur. If anything, Funny People should be the most anticipated comedy of the year, not just because of how funny it could end up being, but also the serious tones could make it memorable. Besides, Apatow and Co. have already had a few trip ups with Walk Hard and Drillbit Taylor, though the former should have done better.

Although, I agree that they shouldn't list Funny People as the best comedy of the year before seeing it. It should be the most anticipated comedy of the year. I don't want to jinx it.

I've heard many people say I Love You, Man is on their must- see list. I've seen the Monsters vs Aliens trailer and that looks awesome as well. Toy Story 3-D, based on title alone, will be a monster hit.

I am looking forward to "The Ugly Truth" in April. Butler and Heigl are so funny! Will see any thing they are in, especially Butler.

I'm looking forward to "I Love You, Beth Cooper" (I reread the book last night it's great) and "I Love You, Man!"
Unlike DylanG I love Apatow's movies and so I can't wait to see what happens with "Funny People"
But I think I'm most looking forward to "Fanboys" if only because I've been waiting over 2 years to see this movie. It's not going to be a masterpiece but I think it'll be fun at the least.
