Discuss: The Action Flicks of 2009
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Thrillers, Mystery & Suspense, Disney, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Brothers, Fandom, 20th Century Fox, The Weinstein Co., Quentin Tarantino, Johnny Depp, Harry Potter, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
So Erik-with-a-k covered the coming comedies of 2009, Scott was all over the horror picks (though his inclusion of Race to Witch Mountain still boggles my mind), Eric-with-a-c nabbed the family-friendly fare, and Elisabeth went over the geek fodder that awaits. But while I respect their calendar years and made-up math alike, I've opted to divide my list of 2009's action and adventure flicks into four categories: Action Flicks I Couldn't Care More About, Action Flicks I Couldn't Care Less About, Action Flicks That I Hope Surprise Me, and Those Which Fell In Between. Enjoy!Action Flicks I Couldn't Care More About: First and foremost -- Watchmen (March 6th). It's one hell of a graphic novel and looks to be one hell of an adaptation (with or without the Giant Blank), but the only problem is it may not hit theaters on time if 20th Century Fox has anything to say about it. Both Fox and Warner Brothers are fighting over who actually owns the rights, and if a judge favors Fox comes January 20th (when the court date is set), we're looking at a delayed release and a whole ton of angry fans. Then there's Public Enemies (July 1st), which has me sold on not the subject matter, but sheer pedigree: Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp and Christian Bale as '30s gangsters. (It doesn't hurt that the earliest word ranges from damn good to great.) On the skimpier side, I can only hope that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (July 17th) streamlines its source material as the previous one had, and I can only hope that Crank 2: High Voltage (April 17th) lives up/down to the depravity of its predecessor. There's one last action movie that I couldn't care more about because, well, I've already seen a version of it. The international cut of Taken (January 30th, though reportedly opening with some R-dodging trims) is about as brisk and butt-kicking as one might hope out of a man-on-a-mission kidnapping thriller, and if you disagree, I'll send Liam Neeson to change your mind.
Action Flicks I Couldn't Care Less About: In terms of nostalgia and such, I managed to miss out on playing with or growing up on, and subsequently caring about, anything related to Street Fighter (February 27th), Dragonball (April 8th), Land of the Lost (June 5th), G.I. Joe (August 7th) and Transformers (June 26th). Judging by what I've seen of those flicks -- in addition to Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (January 23rd) -- for me to suggest anticipation, suppose enthusiasm, or even feign interest just wouldn't be kosher.
Action Flicks That I Hope Surprise Me: Delay often equals dismay in the world of film, but I do hope that Mickey Rourke playing cat to Diane Lane's mouse wields better results in Killshot (January 23rd) than the ol' Weinstein Shuffle might have us believe. Also opening on the 23rd in limited release is Outlander, which -- if I've got this right -- is about an alien being (James Caviezel) who helps proper Vikings defeat an alien creature. If that premise doesn't have potential, I don't know what does. I'm getting some Jumper vibes from the telekinetic antics of Push (February 6th), but we'll see, and I'm drawn to The International (February 13th) if only to find out if director Tom Tykwer was drawn to the project by anything but a paycheck. I hope that X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1st) and Terminator: Salvation (May 22nd) are better than their respective third parts, and I hope that Star Trek (May 8th) will satisfy the Trekkies without leaving the rest of us out in the cold. May Fast & Furious (April 3rd) be as fun as the first one was (and the next two struggled to be), and may Inglourious Basterds (August 21st) be worth Tarantino's proud typographical errors. With any luck, Avatar (December 18th) will live up to James Cameron's determination to Revolutionize Everything We Know About Movies Forever, and Game (September 4th) will match the twisted track record of Neveldine/Taylor to date (see: Crank). Those Which Fell In Between: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson + kids x more explosions than The Game Plan had = Race to Witch Mountain (March 13th) ... WWE wrestler John Cena goes after a kidnapped missus in a Fox film, just as he had in The Marine, with 12 Rounds (March 27th) ... a misplaced drug delivery leads to urban action-comedy hijinks in Next Day Air (May 8th) ... John Travolta and Denzel Washington help botch a classic in Tony Scott's remake of The Taking of Pelham 123 (June 12th) ... Roland Emmerich is back at his big-budget doomsday antics with 2012 (July 10th) ... armored truck operators direct a heist at themselves in, um, Armored (Sept. 18th) ... and Bruce Willis wants to know who's killing the lifelike cyborgs of The Surrogates (Sept. 25th).

Was exclusively using pics of people holding guns intentional or am I just being loony here?

totally disagree with the whole "streamlining harry potter"... it should be as long as it needs to be to fully satisfy fans and tell the story.
any true action movie fan would care about the transformers sequel.

With regards to HP, I'm a fan of all seven books, but think that while 5 & 6 have critical events to the climax of the series, they also contain a fair amount of wheel-spinning in terms of story. Phoenix, the movie, came out stronger than I might've anticipated judging from that, and since this is the same team, I feel they might do the same thing. And while I think they could manage 7 in one really long movie instead of two cash-grabs, if there's one for them to indulge with, it should be that one.
As for the Transformers sequel, I guess that makes me a true good movie fan above a true action movie fan. I'll see it, but good luck getting me excited for it.

This may be somewhat picky, but why is anyone excited for the next big Roland Emmerich waste of time? Honestly, the man made a couple of fairly interesting movies, and literally hasn't made a thing worth seeing since (I guess if you ignore his raping of history in "The Patriot" that can be amended to three fairly interesting movies). Plus, 2012 sounds like its just a remake of "The Day After Tomorrow".
Again, probably picky, but Avatar should be at the top of everyone list for next year. Cameron has never given us a reason to think he turns out anything other than perfection, and he made Aquaman....

After the excruciatingly dreadful "10,000 BC" I really can't expect quality coming from anything that Roland Emmerich puts out. "10,000 BC" was without question the worst movie I saw all year. I never thought I could have been so bored during an "action" movie. It was utterly ridiculous. I felt insulted while I watched it. Did Emmerich think audiences would be so foolish as to enjoy that piece of garbage? I'm not wasting my time with "2012." I don't trust him enough as a filmmaker to see another one of his films.

You left off Ninja Assassin. Also, that you are not stalwart in your confidence of Avatar is disheartening.

I am with you on most of the list, but I'm a die hard X-men fan and looking forward to Wolverine (though I still think they should have done Storm first since she's got the best powers). I can't fault you with your opinion of the 3rd - it wasn't the movie I hoped for either - but I can't get over my pure love of seeing the comic books coming to life.
PS On the picky side -- it's Race to Witch Mountain, not Watch (in first paragraph).

I know you have to link to moviefone, but do you HAVE to? When a link takes you to a blank page with only the movie title, why link?

So your associate won't touch anything in the Geek category that was already done in Sci Fi & Horror, yet you jump all over all the different genres to put this action piece together.
You know I don't mind as long as there's one set of rules for this whole discussion thing.
I think Watchmen has now been mentioned in all the different genres, including romantic comedy!!

Some great looking flicks here... Maybe some not so great looking flicks too. It's not my place to judge.
But I will say one thing... You had me in stitches with the "Giant Blank" line.
Well played, Goss.... Well played.

I'd let Watchmen swap places with Inglorious Basterds. Inglorious Basterds is far and away my most anticipated film of the year, while Watchmen I think is going to rape the greatest comic book ever written, though I do sincerely hope it surprises me. I mean, even if it were just okay, that would surprise me.

Agreed about Inglourious Basterds. For me, it is my most anticipated movie of the past few years. I simply cannot wait until August 21st, but guess I'm gonna have to:(
Also, about the "true action movie fan" statement... I'd have to agree with William, in that I'm a good movie fan, as apposed to a fan of one particular genre. Therefore, I am NOT looking forward to Transformers2, as the first one SUCKED.

You should tell your upsell writer to check his facts. "Marvel Movie is Said to be Great ..."
Watchmen is a DC movie.
