An Early Look at 'The Descent: Part 2'

No matter what I say, I think most of us out there are never going to believe that the follow-up to Neil Marshall's The Descent could ever live up to the original. But, these latest stills from the sequel certainly make me feel a little better about the whole idea -- well, that and the fact that Marshall acted as a 'hands-on' producer for the flick. Still photographer Ollie Upton recently released a whole whack of still photographs from the flick on his website (check them out below) and it looks like things certainly haven't gotten any better for our heroine since we last saw her.
James Watkins' (My Little Eye) script centers on Sarah Carter (Shauna Macdonald), who has emerged from the Appalachian cave covered in her friend's blood, and borderline catatonic. When she is forced to go back down in the caves to help locate her missing companions, she is haunted by visions of what had happened, and as the rescue party ventures further into the caves, Sarah starts to lose her grip on reality. Of course, you can count on the 'Crawlers' making another appearance, and from then on you know things are going to go bad ... very, very, bad.
The Descent: Part 2 will be released in the UK on May 15th, but so far there have been no dates announced for North America. Stay tuned to Cinematical for any updates on a US release, otherwise, those of us on this side of the pond might have to wait for the DVD.

Sounds exactly like the plot to Aliens. Just substitute the cave for the planet.

You would think U.S. would be the priority...
I like the close-up of Mr. Fangs in there, pretty scary looking dude.

Yes, because it's common for UK films to come out in the USA first... you total muppet...
Anyway, still don't see the point of this. The Descent had a very clear and bleak ending (though I heard this was removed in the USA cut) that seemed to hammer home the point that there wouldn't be a Descent 2...

It could be a bloody, tension-filled, horror classic of a movie... and I still don't think I could get over the premise. Why the hell would Sarah go BACK IN THERE? There is no way she could believe any of her companions are anything but crawler food. Do the delusions make her do it? Is she convinced they're calling out to her to save them? Does a message in a bottle make its way out of the cave?
Now, if they'd set it up as she recovers, goes through a Sarah Connor-like transformation into a one-woman fighting machine, and takes a team to get revenge... THAT would be a premise I could maybe believe in for a sequel.

I'm sure you'd get over the premise real quick if they have a good explanation for why she's going back. I want to know too, but that's part of the fun of it... dude, you're getting another Descent movie... that should be reason enough to be happy :)
Those pictures were enough to ease my concerns.

Did I see a different alternative ending?? I thought everyone died in the end.
If everyone dies in the end, you can't make sequels.

I think that the original UK film ends with Sarah in the dark hallucinating while the crawlers close in. This was deemed to bleak for US audiences so the movie was ended when she "escaped the cave" and got in the SUV. So it seems like the sequel is picking up where the US version ended. But it's going to be released in the UK. Yeah I don't know either.

Not necessarily. It just shows her in the cave...Descent 2 picks up with Shauna crawling her way to daylight.

I'm extremely skeptical, but I'll definitely check it out. Sarah (Shauna) is just so damn easy to root for.

I just don't get how this could work. Definitely interested, and I'm not saying it can't work, I just don't know how it will at this point. I mean, its a bunch of blind bat-humans down in caves. Get a rescue party together with a bunch of shotguns and torches and the only "horror" i can think of will be finding the bodies from the first movie and all the gore from blowing apart the crawlers all day. Someone else mentioned Aliens, so I guess the only way I can see this making sense is if when they get down there there are all of the sudden thousands of crawlers running around so they end up getting overwhlemed or something. I think I'm like everyone else; a little skeptical because of the way the first one ended but hopeful that they can get it right.

Even if this movie is in no way as good as the first (which is still what I'm expecting) It'll still be better than most horror flicks these days.
