First Image: Judd Apatow's 'Funny People'
Filed under: Comedy, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Images

Cinematical has gotten their hands on the first official image from Judd Apatow's Funny People, which yours truly recently named the comedy of the year. Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana and Jason Schwartzman star in this flick about a comedian who suffers a near-death experience. This is only Apatow's third time in the director's chair (40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up), despite the fact that his name has been attached to a slew of comedies over the past couple years. On his latest, Apatow notes: "I'm trying to make a very serious movie that is twice as funny as my other movies. Wish me luck!" For more on the comedies of 2009, check out our discussion post over here. Best comedy of 2009? Maybe. Most anticipated? Definitely.
Funny People hits theaters on July 31.

I'm holding out hope on this one, but when I see Adam Sandler starring in a drama that's intended to work as a comedy as well, I think "Spanglish" not Apatow. And that's not a good thing.

Except this is a comedy that has drama in it, not a drama that has funny moments in it. Unlike Spanglish, it will be R-rated and there will be plenty of Apatow humor throughout this.

I get that. My hesitancy is due in large part to Sandler as the lead. It's not the Apatow humor I'm concerned with, it's Sandler's delivery of it. I haven't found the guy funny since I was 14.

The sad thing is that Eric Bana may be the funniest person in this movie.

I'm trying to get excited for this one and am just not having much luck. I love old Sandler movies and love 40YOV and Knocked Up... I haven't been wild about anything Sandler has done since at least 2002 and the Apatow formula isn't always a winner. We'll see.

This is probably more comparable to the serious stuff Sandler has done than the normal stuff he has done recently. And Knocked Up was Apatow's last directorial effort before this. This is like The 40-Year-Old Virgin meets Reign Over Me, just without the virginity aspect of the former and replacing the 9/11 family loss aspect of the latter with a terminal illness.
