Oscars: Visual F/X and Makeup Contenders Narrowed Down
Filed under: Awards, Oscar Watch
The Oscars aren't until Feb. 22, and the nominations won't be announced until Jan. 22, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is steadfastly whittling away the contenders. Shortlists were announced Tuesday for the Best Makeup and Best Visual Effects categories, helping us narrow down which films will eventually be nominated. For visual effects, the three nominees will be drawn from these seven choices: Journey to the Center of the Earth, Australia, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Iron Man, and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Notably absent, at least in my estimation, are Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (Raiders and Temple of Doom both won this category), Cloverfield, and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Because seriously: Australia?
Next Thursday, members of the Academy's visual effects branch will gather at L.A.'s Goldwyn Theater to watch 15-minute highlight reels from each of the films, then vote to select the three nominees. As Variety reports, this is already causing headaches because Journey requires 3D projection and The Dark Knight has IMAX scenes, and the theater isn't equipped for either. Maybe the filmmakers should have thought of that before they got all "innovative" and "different"!
(The reason they only show 15-minute highlights is that they can't expect every voter to have seen all seven contenders in their entirety, especially since the visual effects candidates are often really bad. Remember, it's because of this category that one must properly refer to Hollow Man as "the Oscar-nominated Hollow Man.")Meanwhile, the makeup branch of the Academy has shortlisted these seven films: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Reader, Synecdoche, New York, Tropic Thunder, and The Wrestler. As with the visual effects category, highlight reels will be shown to voters, who will then narrow it down to the three actual nominees.
By the way, for those hoping The Dark Knight will be nominated for as many Oscars as possible, history suggests a glimmer of hope: The second film in the last series, Batman Returns, was nominated in both of these categories. For those of us hoping Charlie Kaufman's brilliant Synecdoche gets some love, well, if the makeup category is all we get, I guess it's better than nothing.

What an absolute farce. Mummy 3? Really? PLEASE. You're telling me that professional FX people think Mummy 3 has better FX than Cloverfield??? I call bullshit.

Those do seem like a joke, but I'd say the three nominees should end up being Benjamin Button, Iron Man, and Hellboy II. The only real visual FX I remember in TDK was Two Face's face, although that was done really well.
I don't know who should win, though. With Iron Man I had a hard time picking the computer imaging from the "real" suit, but Hellboy had some really nice practical makeup for its monsters, which you don't see much of now.

Unless you mean that you don't remember that TDK had any clearly computer generated FX then your comment probably supports TDK winning or being nominated for the award. The fact that you can't remember which scenes needed CG, which were miniatures, and which were real stunts is a testament to the incredible job they did creating that movie. Flipping an 18 wheeler in the middle of the financial district of Chicago jumps out at me as a pretty spectacular shot, one thats on par with all the other visual fx throughout the movie.

maybe the Australia inclusion is a token nomination to shut Baz up about this being an oscar worthy movie.
The nominating committee got together, and said "OK what category can we give Luhrman an Oscar in to get him off our backs, and stop the harassing phone calls......hm....FX sounds good."

I haven't seen all of the nominated movies yet (Let's be honest, I know some horror movies that are being ignored, yet have better "Makeup effects" than this list), but Hellboy 2 is extremely underrated... the visual effects and costumes for that movie are insane... how they do all they do on their budget is simply amazing.
I'd rather see those guys win more than anybody, because that is where Guillermo's work really shines. The listed movies will be nominated for other categories... but give Hellboy at least a fighting change for this one.

And it's because of Best Makeup that we have to say "the Oscar-nominated Norbit."

With Cloverfield not being there is on par with Transformers not winning (losing to Golden Compass). How ridiculous.

Transformers looked like crap. I'll never watch the movie. The CG was garbage.

Yet, you never watched it. The FX of Megatron smashing into that bus alone was kick ass. Never mind the story line, and who is fighting who. The combination of real and CG was amazing. But what do I know, I saw the movie.

It was obvious from the trailers and commercials. They all moved without obeying the laws of physics. They had no friction and varying degrees of disproportionate mass.

HAHAHAHA, his argument against Transformers was that the movie about Giant Alien Robots that fight over a cube that brings machines to life was unrealistic and stupid because of the way the robots moved! Classic. Its called a science fiction, its not supposed to be totally realistic...hence the use of the word "fiction".

Well, the effects in Crystal Skull were pretty awful, so it hardly deserves a nomination.
I can't be the only person who thinks ILM did much better work in the good old days of optical VFX, can I?

I totally agree with you. Some film makers have just plain gotten lazy resting on their digital crutches. That's why Hellboy 2 should win for makeup. They did all their stuff old school. I love the way the real stuff plays on film.

Hellboy 2 for the makeup win- it would be a crime not to recognize the artistry and the massive body of beautiful work these folks did on this film. It's just plain brilliant!
Other two noms for M/U:
Tropic Thunder
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
