Surprise! The People Chose 'The Dark Knight'
It's not really a surprise, but our beloved The Dark Knight has grabbed the top honor at the 35th People's Choice Awards. If there was any award the film was sure to get, that's the one I'd pick. Aside from Favorite Movie, the film also scored a win in the Favorite Action Movie category, and an acting nod for Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. That's right -- one prize, Favorite On-Screen Match-Up. (Chemistry, baby!) Plus, a win for Favorite Cast and one more for Bale as Favorite Superhero -- sorry Tony Stark. With all the love and press, however, the Dark Knight wasn't able to sweep the ground out from under Will Smith, who picked up both Favorite Male movie Star and Favorite Male Action Star. And outside the realm of irresistible geek fare, Wall-E nabbed Favorite Family Movie, The Secret Life of Bees scored Favorite Movie Drama and Independent Movie (over Zachary? I think not.), and, egads, 27 Dresses won the prize for Favorite Movie Comedy. Really, people? Over Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and the other great comedies last year? Geez.
Wrapping up the Favorite wins: Favorite Leading Man went to Brad Pitt, Funny Male Star went to Adam Sandler (did we go back to the '90s?), Female Movie Star went to Reese Witherspoon, Leading Lady went to Kate Hudson (again, what year are we in?), Female Action Star went to Angelina Jolie, Funny Female Star went to Tina Fey, and Favorite Song -- Meryl Streep and "Mamma Mia."
Cinematical readers, you're "People," so I ask: Are these your choices?

Well the only one I really cared all that much about (Beyond Dr. Horrible winning - which it did) was that I would have picked "Mamma Mia" for best Comedy movie... But then I don't really care about half of the other people or categories that got picked... oh House would have been my second pick for tv drama after NCIS, but half of the rest of the people and shows I can't tell you when the last time I watched them or even what the last movie I saw them in...
And I know this makes me extremely odd...
(Now you bring me Colin Firth, Alan Rickman and the rest of my beloved British movie actors over and I'd know who we were talking about! I just don't know American actors very well - well except I do love Reese - but I tend to forget she's not actually British because she did such a good job in one of my favorite movies of all time - The Importance of Being Earnest (Seriously everytime she opens her mouth in anything else she shocks me for a minute before I remember that this is her real accent) - but seriously - there are American movie stars with big names whom I am not sure I have ever seen a single movie that they're in (I'm pretty sure I've only ever seen one Brad Pitt movie in my entire life for example...) - while I watch a PBS version of Persuasion and recognize fairly obscure British actors- "oh isn't that the lady who played the caterer in Love Actually?" etc)
So in other words - I'm used to not being in agreement with most of America... this would also be why I don't watch American Idol despite loving British men with dimples... Simon can't make up for the fact that I disagree with the American public on almost everything when it comes to movies, tv and music...

Favorite Movie/Action Movie- Dark Knight
Favorite Family Movie- Wall-E
Favorite Comedy- Forgetting Sarah Marshall (27 Dresses, Mama Mia, and Get Smart were actually nominated for this category? Just when I thought I was going to go to sleep a happy camper)
Favorite Drama- If Eagle Eye was actually nominated for this category, it doesn't deserve a response) How is that a drama?
Favorite Male Movie Star- Robert Downey Jr. (The fact that he won shows that Will Smith, no matter how much I like him, can come out with any horrible movie he wants and still win)
Favorite Female Movie Star- Maggie Gyllenhall (Reese Witherspoon came out with a movie this year? Ah yes forgot about Four Christmases, and I wish I didn't remember)

The only category I really cared for was the favorite sci-fi show, which Heroes won. :)
And I'm glad that House won over CSI and Greys Anatomy.
