Andrew Stanton Talks 'John Carter of Mars'

I nearly crammed this into a Geek Daily before deciding the quotes were just too long, and that some John Carter fans might read "Nick Fury" in the title of that and skip right over. We can't have that!MTV caught up exclusively with Pixar's Andrew Stanton, who confirmed the film is real. "We're full bore on it right now. We're over the hump of the writing phase, and we're certainly far from rewrites." In fact, they're well into pre-production, and even looking at casting the hero. "I know everybody wanted Hugh Jackman forever. But he's only getting older and more exposed now, so it's a tough call. I'm your typical filmmaker, I want to find the next best unknown."
Penning a script out of an episodic story has been one of the major pitfalls of all movie attempts, but is a problem Stanton thinks he cracked. "It almost had an absence of a story for a feature film because it was very episodic. In its day it was a comic book. I mean, this book was written in 1912. It was the comic book you got in the time before there was such thing as comic books. So, it was really just about the next fight, the next adventure, the next romance. The key was putting a story into it and creating characters that had to grow and real basic stuff that we all know a movie needs."
But Stanton runs the risk of upsetting the devoted by admitting he's tweaked the story and characters. "Fortunately it's an old enough story. There isn't such huge allegiance to it that people won't mind that we muck with it a bit to hopefully amplify the essence of what made me interested in it as a young kid and hopefully will keep me interested in it as an adult."
I'm not familiar enough with Carter to comment -- so I'll hand it over to the fans, who I'm eager to hear say yay, nay and "Who the heck wanted Hugh Jackman?"

The books can get pretty dull, actually. They're fun in concept but suffer from a lack of wit. Adventure is best when there's some wit and banter (Indiana Jones, Mummy I, etc). Whatever Stanton does will probably be entertaining and visually stunning.
Hugh Jackman wasn't a bad choice, but I say give someone else a chance to be the action star. This could be a great vehicle for an up and comer.
Though, I'm disappointed that Stanton is now doing it. Jon Favreau was attached and knowing his use and love of practical effects over digital would really give this movie that 1930's seriel flavor.

I'd give Stanton a chance, Robert. Everyone needs their start in another movie genre.
I do agree that adventure movies are fun when they are witty. No wonder there are too many lame adventure movies or shows out there.

Disappointed that I wouldn't see Favreau's version. I always give filmmakers a chance. I prefer to be surprised than anything else.

I'm not a big John Carter fan, but obviously he was the prototype for space heroes like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. As I recall he essentially falls asleep in a cave and wakes up on Mars. But no matter how they update it, I think you have to respect that it is about action, fighting, and all that good action hero stuff. I would go see it if they can make it work.

Not a huge following!? I mind if he mucks with it! Does this man ever surf the enternet?
What is wrong with people? He has also said that Frazettas artistic interpretation of John Carter is old and stale. I'm telling you, Andrew Stanton isn't making alot of friends in my circle of Carter fans.Frazettas work is what I pretty much grew up with. When I think Of John Carter and Deja Thoris Frazetta's images are what come to mind. And I love Frazetta's take on barsoomian tech and weapons ETC.
Why do film makers who want to make a popular book into a movie think that the first thing they need to do is change everything by putting in their own interpretations therby ruinning what made the books popular.
I have been waiting for a movie versiuon of these books for a long time Please! please Mr Stanton don't modernize it! Dont update it! Dont make it look like Star Wars. And it does have a HUGE following.
