Image of the Day: Plane Crashes in Hudson River, NYC

I know this isn't film-related, but by now I'm sure you're all well aware of the plane that crashed earlier today in the Hudson River in New York City. Apparently, word has it that everyone on board was able to escape with minor injuries. That said, a friend of a friend who was on one of the rescue ferries sent along this image to me and it absolutely blew my mind. This is a photo of the folks exiting the place in the icy waters around NYC. Unreal. Check out a larger version below. Thankfully everyone is safe.

Wow. Looks something right out of "Lost."
Minus the buildings in the background, and lack of death and destruction.

Yeah, this seemed rather bizarre to me. Authorities apparently believe that the accident was caused by a flock of birds, obstructing the plane somehow, right after take-off.

The first thing I thought of after seeing that picture actually was movie-related: Star Trek IV.

Anyone noticed that nobody seems to be wearing their lifevest? How weird is that?
Can't say I have ever been in that situation, the panic, the confusions etc.. but so odd that not one person thought to grab their vest.
Glad everyone is safe.

I know you admitted that this is OT but this doesn't belong here. It's an amazing story and an amazing photo but please don't turn this into a regular pop culture blog.

But you know this will be a movie in a years time don't you?
Only with explosions and an ex-marine who happens to be on the flight who gets everyone to safety single handed before shagging the fit stewardess as the plane goes down.

Let me guess, you're the guy in the DC suburbs who cancels school when you see one snowflake falling outside your window? This is one post by an author who happens to live in New York. If they started putting up 2 stories a day that aren't movie related then begin to worry, but I think we can all accept one real life story a year from cinematical.
Having said that, this is pretty amazing that nobody was hurt. What I find incredible was that the reports say that the contact with the birds happened a few minutes after take off. Within a few minutes implies to me that the plane was at least a few thousand feet off the ground (I don't know the geography of the airport vs. river well enough to be able to say whether or not this assumption is based on fact or conjecture), so I'm even more shocked that the pilot was able to land safely without any serious injuries. Great job on his part.

Seriously Robin, I can't even begin to understand how you could possibly be negative about a story like this on any level.
One of the most miraculously fortunate things happens, in this City of all places, and considering all the bullshit that's going with our country and the world in general.....and all you can think about is that you don't want this site to become a pop culture site ?!? WTF !?! Are you kidding me ?!? So sad....
Thank you Erik, for recognizing that this story transends EVERYTHING, regardless of the site's intended purpose.
