Sony Moves 'The Ugly Truth' From Spring to Summer
Filed under: Comedy, Romance, Sony, RumorMonger, Distribution
Normally, I wouldn't care that Sony pushed back its release of the seemingly unremarkable rom-com The Ugly Truth almost four months, except that the new date -- July 24th -- lands just a week before Judd Apatow's demographic-sharing Funny People opens.Despite all evidence to the contrary in the only available trailer, it seems that this Katherine Heigl-Gerard Butler R-rated battle of the sexes might just have what it takes to succeed in the late-summer bawdy-comedy domain made popular by Step Brothers last year, Clerks II in 2006 and Wedding Crashers in 2005, instead of the relative safe bet that is the first week in April.
Now it's only a matter of time before the studio drops a red-band trailer that may or may not have me thinking this might actually be funny, and if ever there was a studio that knew how to embrace restricted promotional materials, it's this one.
What say you guys (and girls)? Has this looked appealing to you to begin with? Are either Heigl or Butler effective draws alone, let alone together? And will this movie have what it takes to sway you from simply buying a ticket to G-Force instead?

I'm indifferent about this one. I'll probably be skipping a trip to the movie theaters that week and saving my money for the following week with Funny People, which is my most anticipated comedy and should take the title for best late summer bawdy comedy, if not best summer comedy. But I'm getting a sense this might get pushed back a little bit more since I don't think Harry Potter and Funny People are going to budge.

I was so looking forward to seeing this movie in the spring. I'm disappointed that I have to wait now. Gerard Butler has got it all! Great actor, sexy and awfully easy on the eyes, even as a MCP! But I'll look forward to the summer showing if I must.

I've said it right along that what appears to me to be a formulaic comedy, is saved by the presence of Butler. I'll give it a chance if he's in it. No matter what time of year they release it.

I don't get it. Why not release this film when it has a chance to have some legs as opposed to putting it in a slot where it'll be in the wake of Harry Potter (two weeks earlier) and in the shadow of the looming Funny People?
Also, this film looks more like a chick flick than the male oriented coming-of-age story like Step Brothers or Wedding Crashers. I thought the success of Sarah Marshall and Baby Mama might have made the rom-com a staple of April but apparently Hollywood still wants to lump all of their potentially money-making films together. Great plan. I wish they'd figure out people want to see movies throughout the year and give up their "seasons" like only blockbusters in the summer and Oscar fare only at the end of the year.

Actually Harry Potter is being released one week earlier than this (July 17). It is evenly sandwiched in between Harry Potter and Funny People. And I think Sony might reconsider.

I suspect that there's a substantial audience of women who'd pass on helping #5 of Boy Wizard for 100 minutes with the Phantom of the 300 and that chick from Grey's Anatomy.
Funny People stands as more of a threat, being an adult-skewing comedy and all, whereas Potter is not.

I think Katherine Heigl is a really excellent comedic actress and with the right movie she could be something very special indeed. She has shone pretty brightly in her last two movies and on top of being very talented is also beautiful to go with it. So in my mind she has definite star appeal.
Now...whether this is going to be a good movie...I am not convinced yet, but it has an R rating and a watered down trailer is never very reflective of the actual movie (Knocked Up being a good example of that).
I hope it does well. The only concern I have is we will have to put up with Butler's shaky attempt at an American accent for 90 minutes.

I kinda thought this looked pretty funny from the jump. Standard, yes, but still funny. But I can't say it makes the release date makes a difference-I'm going to see them both (this and Funny People) anyway.

If you can believe a Gerard Butler fan site, they noted
"the film has been given a “summer blockbuster” vote of confidence thanks to favorable early previews."
Although I think the movie looks good, the trailer wasn't that great. In the end, I think Judd Apatow's " Funny People" will be the bigger draw. I don't think Heigl and Butler will be able to compete unless the critics give the movie good reviews.
I think they should have kept the movie's release date in April.

I will definitely go see it and the reason IS Gerry Butler. And here's a scenario: The week it opens, all the soccer moms will take their kids to see Potter while they slip in to see Gerry. The next week, they will take their husbands to see Funny People while they again indulge in Gerry.
Hugh Jackman was just in the biggest flop of last year.
So I think Gerry's much more relevant. Although I do like Hugh, too. Room enough for both of 'em.

Hmm...agree with the Hugh Jackman comment, but he can't do romcom. granted I think butler can do it but that accent is horrible in the trailer and he doesn't look so cute.
i think april would have been better, but i havent seen a preview.

Butler has looked way better than he does in this trailer. Sheesh, he's looked better walking down the street in pap pics. I don't understand a director making Butler look bad. He had to work hard at that. Butler is a good actor but his American accent isn't right in these scenes. Contrary to popular Hollywood casting beliefs, every actor from the British Isles can NOT do a generic American accent. Butler does not have a track record of putting butts in seats on his own (with "300" the Frank Miller graphic novel legend & that fan boy base sold that movie). Heigl, however, has historically sold. For whatever reason "27 Dresses" made money (& you can't tell me Ed Burns was a draw there). So maybe she's a big enough romcom draw. I don't like this trailer-the story seems recycled & not very well at that. But trailers aren't always a good rep of the movie. The mktg execs don't know much about release dates & have been known to release the wrong movie @ the wrong time. They've also been known to get lucky. Guess we'll see.
