Gerard Butler To Get His Robert Burns Biopic?

Poor Scotland -- it seems only if you have Mel Gibson or Liam Neeson in a kilt can you get one of your native heroes onscreen. Not that Gerard Butler hasn't tried. He's long cherished plans of starring in a biopic of Scottish poet Robert Burns. The problem has always been one of financing -- even after 300, Butler wasn't able to convince anyone to fund the film, apparently due to a combination of no one outside of Scotland remembering or caring who Robert Burns was, and no one quite knowing who this "Gerard Butler guy" was. (I imagine Scottish heroes are probably easier to market to overseas audiences if they're wielding massive claymores instead of pens.)That may soon change. According to The Times, Butler hopes to get his chance in 2009. Vadim Jean is attached to direct, and James Cosmo is set to produce. (Presumably, Butler might as well since he does have his own shingle now.) Most of the budget is already in place, thanks to Scottish Screen, and the remainder will be raised by signing 250 "subscribers" to the project. They're borrowing an idea from Burns himself -- in 1786, investors backed the famous Kilamarnock Edition of Burns' poetry, convincing the poet to abandon his plan to relocate to Jamaica. This year would also be the perfect one to film in, since its the 250th anniversary of the poet's birth.
I'd happily contribute, since I'm rather fond of Burns, Scotland, and period pieces (and ok, Butler himself) but I'm sure one has to be richer (and probably Scottish) to be one of the 250. So here's a bit of press instead, and best of luck to Butler, Jean, and Cosmo that 2009 is their year. Movie audiences need a little poetic education once and awhile.

Hurrah! I really hope for Scotland, Burns and Butler, that 2009 will be the year. I've looked forward to the promise of this film for some time. I'm amazed it has taken so long to get the funding. What with the Queen and her Grandmother Victoria (remember Mrs.Brown?) being such fans of all things Scottish, you'd think some money from the royal coffers might have been forthcoming.

You know...I'd chip in too! And what a testament of the fans devotion to Gerry for many of them to be offering to foot the remainder of the bill for this movie. If Gerry knew that, I'm sure he'd feel overwhelmed and very proud of himself...as he should be, he's come a long way and is an amazing actor as well!
Good for him...I'm so proud of him!

Hey, Elisabeth. Hm, From Butler’s own desciption this script covers Burns’ life when he was way younger than Butler now. How are they going to make Butler look 21 - 37 when he already looks early 40's. I love Butler & as an actor I think he can handle whatever he wants but he doesn’t look that young. I guess with his own prod co. behind it they’ll taylor it to him, make him look good, & calculate it to win an award (ala Charlize Theron’s prod co. & “Monster”). Also up until this recent press release, all descriptions of the script made it sound geared toward Burn’s sex life - as imagined in the head of writer Alan Sharp, which doesn't sound like a sincerely good movie. Nobody needs an exploration of 18th century Scottish bedrooms w/a voiceover of Burns' poetry. Come on. But Robt Burns' work & political aspirations for Scottish independence are worth a movie as long as they make honest work of it. So I hope it turns out well for all involved (including Burns).

I completely agree -- I don't want to see a cheesy bodice ripper by any means. I'm hoping that all the pre-production emphasis on Burns' sex life is a deliberately shallow blurb designed to attract a Hollywood studio or distributor. "Hey -- it'll be like Shakespeare in Love!" I really don't want to believe they'd blow off his political and national importance, particularly when they're asking for money from subscribers!
I don't think Butler's age is a big issue -- he's what, 39 now? He looked amazingly baby-faced at the Golden Globes so I think he can pull it off. Burns wasn't the healthiest of men, and they say he aged early, so I think there's some wiggle room as far as an older actor playing him. But not too much -- another 5 years and it'll be a joke.

This is good news.
And, Butler is able to drastically change themselves for the role [if he has not lost that ability]

I'm with ya, Elisabeth. Yep, he says he's 39. He looked better at the GGs. He cleans up well. And maybe he looks better when he's rested, in good shape, and not - well - let's say, up later than he should be.
Ok I'm a geek, half Scottish & Irish, & I love Burns: Died at 37 of a bacterial infection they think was related to rheumatic fever as a child. So he kind of was never "well" - rheumatic fever creates heart issues later. Plus he was an alcoholic who slept all over.
So, ok, maybe he didn't look that young. I just thought most of the movie was meant to happen in his younger yrs. Just sayin'.
I think it's great they're filming in Scotland with GB b/c it's close to his heart. I hope they maintain their sincerity regarding Burns' politics & work, & still manage to make an interesting, fun movie.

This is the role i most want to see Gerard Butler play. He will make a wonderful Burns, he has the charisma, the amiable charm, the passion and so much emotional depth and empathy to show all the contradicting good boy/bad boy sides of Burns, they have a lot in common and we have been campaigning with the fans all over the internet gathering support for a couple of years now hoping a film would happen.
Robert Burns life story has just about everything to make an oscar winning film and it should give Gerard the recognition and the oscar he truly deserves. He will make Scotland and himself proud and show why Robert Burns is still so revered around the world and not so inconsequential as some people assume. There should at least be one great film made on his life, it's about time.

apparently you don't know Gerard Butler like his billions of fans do, he can do any part. I have no doubt he will make a Grate Burns and do it soooo well. He always puts his all into every movie and in PS I Love You he was made to look younger and it was a fine job too. Don't count him out at all, he is full of surprises, as we that follow him know.
