Hilary Duff & Kevin Zegers Sign On for 'Bonnie and Clyde'
Filed under: Action, Drama, Romance, Casting
If you ever wanted to see more of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow's life on the big screen, and thought that the Oscar-winning Bonnie and Clyde wasn't enough, your wishes are about to be granted, although maybe not as you expected.Variety reports that Hilary Duff and Kevin Zegers have signed onto Tonya S. Holly's indie feature, The Story of Bonnie and Clyde. But this won't be a remake. It seems that Holly became intrigued by the story because the infamous gangster duo had been in a abandoned house on her family's property. The film will follow the adventures we've come to know, plus "times in their lives that have never before been seen on the big screen." According to the film's MySpace page (beware, it's busy and hard-to-read), the indie will follow their youth and love, as it morphed from a wanna-be actress or poet and poor gun-lover, to one of the most infamous and dangerous duos.
Duff has definitely been increasing her range lately, and Zegers has done everything from Transamerica to The Jane Austen Book Club, but so far, I can't imagine them as the duo -- at least not in a way that rivals Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty. But considering how interesting the story is -- from how the duo came to be, to the sensational aspects of their death (like people grabbing "souvenirs" from the bodies), to questions of Bonnie's responsibility -- I'm hoping for the best.

We have to keep in mind that this is going to be an original telling of the story of Bonnie and Clyde, not the original 1967 movie, so this will probably be more true to form to what actually happened. So, of course it's not going to be like the original. If it was, then, well, it would be accused of being a remake. :p
As far as the actors go, I think the casting's fairly spot on. I looked at both pictures of Hilary and the real-life Bonnie, and both bear pretty good resemblance to each other, and Hilary's around the right age (Bonnie was 24 when she died; Hilary is 21 but could pass for 24). Kevin doesn't bear too much resemblance to his real-life counterpart, but he's definitely the right age (Clyde was 25 when he died; Kevin will probably be 25 by the time they start filming).
Color me interested. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Hooray for Hollywood! Another remake of an old film. Moreover, they had to remake a film like Bonnie & Clyde did they have to choose two of the most milquetoast actors to play the leads? Hillary Duff does not equal Faye Dunaway. Personally, I don't think Bonnie & Clyde was Dunaway's best performance, but she is head and shoulders above Hillary Duff!

Dude, did you even read the whole article?
This is NOT a remake of the original 1967 movie, but rather directly based off the original story of Bonnie and Clyde. Stop comparing this to the original movie.
Read again. Not. A. Remake.
Read the article, people.

Dude, I did read the article. The 1967 film was also based on the original story. While it took some liberties it's still the story of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. This film might show "times in their lives that have never before been seen on the big screen," but it's still a remake. Battlestar Galactica is different from the 1970s series, but it's still a remake. A great remake, but still a remake. Moreover, Hillary Duff is still a poor choice for the role of Bonnie Parker. For that matter, Kevin Zegers is an equally poor choice for Clyde Barrow.

Even though it's not a remake, Hilary Duff still seems like an odd choice. She's not exactly known as a heavyweight. But who knows, maybe she'll surprise us all!

Agreed. No one thought Heath Ledger was any good before "The Dark Knight", and look what happened to him (death aside). I mean, she's no Heath Ledger, but this may be the film that makes or breaks her career.
As I mentioned earlier in one of my posts, she already bears some of a resemblance to her real-life counterpart. I mean, just take a look at both of the following photos for comparison:
http://www.nndb.com/people/698/000110368/bonnie-parker.jpg
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm925144064/nm0240381
If she did something to her eyebrows, dyed her hair brown, and didn't wear a ton of makeup, she would be practically perfect.
Just waiting to see how this turns out.

To J.W. Hanawalt's comment, "No one thought Heath Ledger was any good before 'The Dark Knight'"
Except that's totally not true. He was a well respected young actor before that movie. He was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best actor for his role in Brokeback Mountain, and had been receiving many positive reviews for his performances YEARS before Dark Knight.
Maybe YOU didn't think he was any good before Dark Knight, but MANY other people did.
