Zack and Miri Make a Plahblahblah

Zack and Miri Make a Movie
Zack and Miri Make a Wholesome Film About Furthering the Population
Zack and Miri Make a Naughty Movie
None of those have the same ring as Zack and Miri Make a Porno, do they? Since the film has come, lathered the world in posters and buzz, and faded away, you'd think the title brou-ha-ha would be over now. Not so fast. Since Kevin Smith's latest is about to hit DVD shelves on February 3, a new controversy is brewing.
Canoe reports that Wal-Mart is getting all nervous-like abut the title. Smith says that they want him to remove the word from the cover of the DVD, and he has complied with the request. (Hey, times are rough, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.) But as he so rightly worries: What happens when one of the unsuspecting few buy it and then get the rude awakening of a movie alllll about sex and porn? As Smith told Erik last year: "By calling it Zack and Miri Make a Porno, you're drawing a line in the sand that kinda says, anyone who's remotely interested in a movie like that with that title, come on in. If you're offended by the word porno, stay the f*ck away. This ain't for you."
I do hope that some unsuspecting people buy it, see it, and get ticked off. It's ridiculous to say that the film is okay for the shelves, but only if the title is changed -- who cares if it misleads people? I'd think that they'd rather have the random few brassed off about the title, than customers buy it thinking it's a wholesome romance and then getting a rude awakening. Can you imagine if they made it all the way to Mewes' final scene?

I got a rude awakening with Jason Mewes' final scene...the frakking movie ended. Which is bad since the movie didn't have a true ending. I was with it right until that point.

I laughed when Banks & Rogen were introduced at the Globes to present... and instead of mentioning that they were both the stars of "Zack and Miri Make a Porno", they were introduced as stars of individual films.

America is so funny, it's the origin of amazing new things and top of the line thought, great writers, artists then, a black cloud of conservative, narrow minded people who are so easily bothered by the reflection of their own deviance in a simple word like porn. Whooo, porn, so evil...

Kevin Smith is an entertainer and raconteur, even an indie pioneer. I like him just fine, but he is hardly a "great writer and artist." He is selling a product.

I am speaking in general, not talking about Kevin Smith. Stanley Kubrick was forced to put those nudie covering CGI people in his orgy scene and Henry Miller's novels were banned for years, just to name two. That's what I mean when I say America is an over the top moralistic society.

Mr.R, Kubrick wasn't forced to CGI the black-cloaked figures over the sex parts. He died before the movie was premiered (I believe) and WB took it upon themselves to cover it up to get an R rating, etc. etc.

I remember it otherwise but I could be wrong, so? Does that change the point of my commentary?

Just throw a sticker over "Porno" on the front cover and leave the full title on the spine. That way Wal*Mart won't offend the delicate sensibilities of passersby, only those who stop to pick it up.
It shouldn't even be an issue. The movie is not a porno just because it has the word in the title. I mean, come on. How many pornos actually have that word in the title? Any?
Let's just delete "sex" from film titles, too. Wouldn't want some kid seeing that word and asking their parent what it means. God forbid they have to explain something to their child.

When the movie was in its theatrical run, it was advertised as "Zach and Miri" in a lot of ads I saw. *shrugs* The movie wasn't good enough to merit all the fuss.

Welcome to puritanical America. Anything involving violence and bad language -- hell, yeah, bring it on! We lurves ourselves some violence with lots of blood and guts and eyes getting shoved out of sockets!
But talk about sex or dare to show a nipple and - holy sh*t!!! - all hell breaks loose!!
How pathetic.
