After finishing up the first four volumes of the hilarious and endearing Scott Pilgrim graphic novels (the fifth hits stores on Wednesday), I was talking with one of my fellow Cinematical writers who was similarly fond of them and yet quite vocal in his discontent with the casting of Michael Cera in Edgar Wright's forthcoming big-screen adaptation (admittedly, the character does deserve someone a little... livelier).Between that, the less-than-amusing spot for Harold Ramis' Year One from yesterday's Super Bowl, his potential part in that fingers-crossed Arrested Development movie, the release of Youth in Revolt being bumped back, and his role in last month's Sundance curio Paper Heart (oh, heck, and tomorrow's DVD release of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist while we're at it) -- is 2009 due to be the year of Michael Cera, or rather, is Cera due for a backlash against his seemingly limited range of bumbling performances?
What do you guys think of the once and future George Michael?

I enjoy Cera. He doesn't need to change his character. I mean woody allen never had to change in terms of still being able to delight the audience.
As for the scott pilgrim casting.... I hope he can pull it off. If he can channel the same obliviousness as Brett from Flight of the Conchords, I think it could work. Also, if you recall when Colin Farrell's character gets excited about "them filming midgets" in IN Bruges, I think that sudden flip from sullen to overly excited is very Scott Pilgrim.
So I can live with Cera, just everyone else on that cast for SP seems off. Curious to see how Ramona Flowers turns out.

I was completely underwhelmed by the Year One spot. I was underwhelmed by Superbad, too, but not because of Cera - because of the writing and Jonah "CAN YOU HEAR ME BECAUSE I'M YELLING EVERY LINE?" Hill.

Cera is seeming more and more like a one trick pony. Nick, from Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, should have been a chance to break from his usual schtick but he was just right back in the same routine. If he doesn't seem like the right fit for Scott Pilgrim, there's little evidence to support that he'll be able to stretch.
Hopefully he proves me wrong but right now I'm not seeing it.

Cera hasn't impressed since leaving AD. Superbad was annoying, Nick and Norah put me to sleep, and the trailers on Year One aren't very promising. His character looks like it could be distracting and probably annoying. Why he hasn't signed on for the AD movie is puzzling. The role compliments his humor, and would be a much better vehicle than the roles he's been signing up for lately. It's gotta be about the money. And Robin hit it right on the head, Jonah Hill is a horse's ass. How I ever endured the full duration of Superbad is beyond me. Is it foreseeable that this kid has any range to do a role that doesn't include him YELLING EVERY POMPOUS, WITLESS LINE OF HYPERBOLE that his characters say? No. Not happening.

Michael Cera still makes me laugh, though I've only seen him in Arrested Development and Juno. But what I really want to say is that I'm with your friend on that one. I love the Scott Pilgrim series, and I'm pretty bummed that they chose Michael Cera! I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised.. because I don't see how the roles he has played or the humor he uses fits Scott Pilgrim... Of course, actors can become different roles! I am really hoping this is the case for Michael Cera.

I'm a pretty big Micheal Cera fan but I can almost guarantee that he is due to be trashed by everyone pretty soon. He is young and becoming really successful. It's already starting with everyone deciding they are going to hate Year One based on the 30 seconds that they have seen. His only hope is to make sure he is in the Arrested Development movie if it ever even gets made.

Tom, I don't think people are waiting to bash him because he's young and successful. I think it has more to do with the fact that his act was pretty funny the first time you saw, kinda funny the second time, okay the third, and is starting to get downright annoying. He seems like an alright guy, but he plays exactly the same character in every movie, and even Chris Farley started to get old by the 3rd of 4th Farley Spade movie (spade was old by the first one). He needs to demonstrate that he has some sort of range, and if doesn't then his 15 minutes of fame will probably run up pretty soon.

Paper Heart is fantastic, and vulnerable. Cera is still, and always has been, a comedic improv force to be reckoned with.

HAs anyone seen the interview with Michael Cera being skeptical about the Arrested Development script?
Is that his agent/manager next to him? I wonder if he had anything to do with Cera's hesitance.
The agent does seem pretty smarmy and souless. I bet he goes out with some struggling actress straight from some Canadian daytime show. And I bet he cheats on her. hmm?
