Watch This: 'Lars and the Real Girl' Director's Super Bowl Commercial
Filed under: Home Entertainment, Trailers and Clips
He may have had a bit of an unfortunate blip with Mr. Woodcock, but director Craig Gillespie has proven that he can make engaging stories out of the mundane and strange -- so much so that he's quickly becoming an example of just how possible it is to make simplicity engaging. He made the world of Real Doll love absolutely wonderful with Lars and the Real Girl, he's helming the heck out of Diablo Cody's United States of Tara, and he made one awesome Super Bowl ad for cars.com -- which you can check out above.
The commercial shouldn't be entirely surprising since Gillespie has been whipping up commercials for years, and won a DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials in 2006. But it's still good fun, and a great example about how a simple idea executed just so can be much more satisfying than a big, convoluted to-do.
Yes, it's a bit like Wes Anderson, but what I like is that it doesn't come off as extremely quirky. Somehow, Gillespie just takes that quirk and make it seem as natural as anything else.

Anyone who has seen The Royal Tenenbaums knows this is a complete Wes Anderson rip-off. I actually like most of it, but the finish was a let down.

Crap ad. It's a totla Tenenbaum's take off. He should have just hired Alec Baldwin to do the voiceover and complete his theft.
