Candy Land: The Movie - Are You Frakking Kidding Me?
Filed under: Deals, Scripts, Family Films
I shouldn't be surprised. None of us should. If Monopoly is going to become a feature film, what isn't? The door has been opened, the path has been made, and now we're getting more board game feature film action.Variety reports that Universal Pictures is getting ready for a journey to Candy Land. The Hasbro game will get morphed into a feature film by Tropic Thunder scribe Etan Cohen, and will be directed by Kevin Lima, who most recently brought us Enchanted. "The tyke-friendly board game isn't as obvious an inspiration for a movie project as those other Hasbro brands, but the studio has tapped talent adept at comedy and family fare." No shee-it. But that movie has already been made, under the Willy Wonka moniker.
Clue, now that made sense. A murder mystery with quirky characters is perfect for the big screen. Monopoly? That's just silly. And Candy Land? Oh, come on. At this rate, we'll have an Uno, a Rummy, and a Tiddlywinks game in no time. After that, well, Tic Tac Toe -- you better watch out! Anyone want to make bets on the next childhood board game to get the feature treatment?

I'm hoping for Operation. "Don't touch the sides! BUZZ. Oops, butterfingers."

Hungry, hungry hippos has potential.
Battleship would be too conventional, a see battle with submarines.
Although, I'm definitely holding out hope for a connect 4 game!!

This makes me sad. Is there no limit to the LACK of creativity in Hollywood?! I can wrap my head around turning popular cartoons into films (to a point). But turning to board games is a new low that even I thought would never come to be. As mentioned above, CLUE is an exception due to the original concept and characters involved. But I have to believe there's a warehouse somewhere that has thousands of inspired, unique screenplays/scripts just waiting to be paid attention to. But no... we get some batch of movies thought up by someone as they meander through a toy aisle in Target. I suppose it's not too long before we'll see the new Dreamworks piece on "Mouse Trap" or delve into the dark and seedy world of "Operation!" Which will then undoubtedly pave the way to the future summer blockbuster hits... "Lincoln Logs" and "Tinker Toys"... oh brother... I can't wait!!!

From the director of House of 10,000 Corpses, and the producer of Forrest Gump, comes a movie about hope. A movie about survival. A movie about 2 hours and 10 minutes long. Steven Segal, Jane Fonda, Kato Kaelin, and Barbra Streisand star in Jenga. Don't pull the wrong blockbuster this Summer, 2009.

my vote is for Mr. Bucket, the homicidal bucket with balls that pop out of his head.
its either that or Chutes vs. Ladders, also known as CvL, and its inevitable R-rated sequel set in a secluded pacific northwest town CvL 2.

Universal needs to admit that they got the crumbs of the Hasbro deal and do a video game development deal somewhere.
Since you're taking bets, though, My money's on "Risk" or "Battleship" as the next game movie. Though ya never know, "Connect Four" starring Will Ferrell could happen!

a Risk movie would be amazing. you know, a historical war-drama that completely ignores all of history? That would be so fun to watch.

Pic-up-Stix, the movie!
Checkers - "Stop trying to king me and KING ME!"
Sorry! or Trouble... as long as it has a pop-o-matic bubble in it.
Or maybe Perfection... except it's a bomb!
Ugh.

My wife found the Candyland from her youth (early 80's) and it has a fully realized story written on the inside of the box that follows the path of the game. So unlike monopoly there is already a plot of sorts to go off of.

FYI, they have already made a movie adaptation of Clue. It was quirky, it was quite amusing. Stars included Tim Curry, Christopher Llyod and Madeline Khan.

wow, that's crazy!! and i missed the monopoly news, so yeah I am surprised. I don't know, I can't remember the last time I played that game, or what it was about.. But I guess it could turn out okay. I mean movie adaptations of games like these.. Part of me thinks, "That is so ridiculous" but then another part of me thinks "If they do it well, it could be cool. Maybe they'll have a cool take on it."
