Christian Bale Apologizes Without Dropping The F-Bomb
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Newsstand
Yes, the foul-mouthed Christian Bale rant that captivated the world this week has finally run its course. We've heard the audio, watched the numerous amounts of quirky videos ... and now, as we move on to the next "hot" Hollywood news item, Bale himself has finally stepped up to say his peace. Apparently he used the Kevin & Bean radio show in Los Angeles to speak his mind -- calling in this morning to tell Kevin, Bean and the rest of us that he's a very sorry man. And since over a hundred of you commented on our original post, something tells me a few of you might be interested in what he had to say.Bale: "It's been a miserable week for me. I know I have a pottymouth, everybody knows that now. I have no confusion whatsoever. I was out of order beyond belief, I was way out of order. I acted like a punk, I regret that and there is nobody that has heard that tape that has been hit harder by it than me. I make no excuses for it, it is inexcusable and I hope that is absolutely clear. I'm embarrassed by it. I ask everybody to sit down and ask themselves, have they ever had a bad day and have they ever lost their temper and really regretted it immensely. Feel free to make fun of me at my expense; I deserve it completely.
On whether there are any hard feelings between he and the DP: "We have resolved this completely...I have no intention of getting anyone fired. There is no problem whatsoever."
More after the jump ...
He continues, "One thing that has really disturbed me throughout this is I'm not familiar or comfortable with this notion of being a movie star. I'm an actor and I'm don't quite know how to handle [the movie star thing]. The thing that disturbs me so much is that I've heard a lot of people saying that I seem to think I'm better than anybody else. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I'm a lucky SOB. I never forget that and that is why I put so much into what I do and I care so much about it . Sometimes that enthusiasm just goes awry."
You can listen to this particular audio over here.
What do you think? Should we hug it out and hope Terminator Salvation kicks ass, or what?

That's about as graceful and genuine and humble as I could possibly imagine. Nice apology.

I don't mean to be snippy, but he seems like a rage-aholic. For therapy I prescribe that he and Russell Crowe be locked in a padded room and throw phones at each other.

I was always taught that when someone uses a phrase like "I don't mean to" they mean anything but.

Fine. I was snippy. But the guy is a rage-aholic. And throw Naomi Campbell in that padded room while we're at it.

You'd be surprised how stressed people [usually] become when making a film. It's very hard work.

I don't think hearing one out of context audio clip is enough to dub the guy a "rage-aholic".
Hey, I heard he had sex once too. Let's label him a sex-aholic, while we're at it.

You're right Mike! Mainly because there's no such thing as "rageahol." Also no "sexahol" that I'm aware of. Unfortunately.

If Christian Bale and Michael Phelps have taught us anything, it's that no matter what you're doing or where you are, someone - somewhere - is recording it for public consumption.

The people that are the best at their craft continually talk about how they're never comfortable with where they are. That they're so focused on what they're doing, and improving in every way that they have intense focus and intense drive. When that intense focus, and intense drive gets interrupted and disturbed, it puts them all out of sorts.
While I don't condone Bale's actions, and I don't believe, after this interview, that he does either, I can in some ways understand why he reacted the way he did.
Bale has shown that he completely takes on the part that he's playing. He's fully invested in every role, not just to the point where he wants to put on a good performance, but to the point where he almost wants to be the character he plays. It's evident in each of his roles that he's a very intense and devoted actor.
You see this happen often with those that are so totally focused on their goal in sports, so it should be no different than when Tiger starts yelling at someone because they flashed a photo in his face during a swing and broke his concentration. It's unfortunate that Bale has to go through this scrutiny, and I do feel he's sorry for his actions.
I also have to say, I appreciate his dedication to creating something amazing for me as an audience member, even in a role that many would find somewhat absurd, in John Connor or a Terminator movie.

Too true. If anyone else has watched "The Machinist", then you know that he completely immerses his self in the role. It takes a lot of work to do that, and I'm sure it's taken a mental toll on him.

So very true. Take any number of his films, this guy is immersed in the role. Even way back in Empire of the Sun, as a young boy, he impressed with his portrayal. I know that I get annoyed when I'm totally focused on a task and someone interrupts with something that did not require immediate attention. The difference is the degree of response.
Christian was way over the top, but he seems to be aware of that particular tendency of his. I could hope and assume he's making effort to minimize or eliminate his "potty mouth". Still, that's his business, not mine. My life's foundations haven't been shaken because someone, whose job just happens to put him in a position of public notice, was a complete jerk to someone else. That isn't the totality of his life. I daresay none of us come close to knowing what he's really like. Only hubris would allow us to think the man IS his characters, or that one captured tirade defines what he is like.
So sure, point out to him that which he already knows. Reinforce the idea it was bad behavior and should change. Then get on with our lives, because really, he isn't a part of our lives to any meaningful degree. Don't confuse the man and his foibles with the actor and his craft. Enjoy the work and pray for the man, if you're so inclined. Or do whatever. Who am I and why should you care what I think. IMO, each of us has spent more time than we should even reading or writing about the event. Go do something of value, instead.

I love that he is being so apologetic. I actually expected excuses, but this makes me think more of him as a sincere person than his work possibly could.
Still, actions speak louder than words and I just hope for his sake that he doesn't lose his temper again.

I agree, Kevin. Suddenly everyone takes this personally like Bale owes them some kind of personal respect. Who cares? I don't, I am going to go see the damn movie and that's all I am entitled to. Stars are human and we shouldn't give a shit about this. People who are offended in a personal way should get therapy, it's looser material.

You're right and after hearing Christian Bale's apology I find it hard to ignore his humanity simply because he's a big name right now. Everyone makes mistakes and he's owned up to it and I'm sure will learn from this just as he's done in the past. That's the mark of good character because if you're honest everyone has to deal with issues only the famous do it with the world to watch and pick over.
Some humility all around pls :)

The apology shows class, and I only hope he had the grace to apologize to the man he was screaming at before he went on the radio to express his shame. Christian Bale is an extraordinary talent, but that's no excuse for treating other people that way.

Actually, the DP had done the same thing numerous times before even AFTER Christian Bale had nicely asked him not to do it:

Totally. This movie will probably bomb because of what this guy did while filming it. It reminds me of that time in the NBA where this big ass dude got pissed off at a small guard in PRACTICE cause the little guy was playing tough D on him so he cocked back and SUCKER PUNCHED him right in the mouth. Totally unprofessional, and was actually assault. It ruined that guys popularity so bad that I can't even remember his name...oh wait, yes I can, it was MICHAEL F#$@ING JORDAN cold cocking Steve Kerr. Wait a second, that didn't ruin his reputation? Weird. But hey, I'm sure you're not a hypocrite so you think Michael Jordans a piece of s#$% and would never watch his games a decade ago. Get over yourselves people, this will be forgotten in a month, tops, as well it should be. And everyone who's complaining and saying Bales an awful human being should click on that AICN link from John.
