Stuff We Missed: Fallen Superheroes, Hit Men and Amber Heard

As much as we try to cover everything here at Cinematical, unfortunately some stories slip through the cracks. Here's a bunch of stuff we missed this week:
-- The first images of The Fallen, from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen have arrived online ... except it's the toy version of the Transformer, which means it's a toy and not very interesting. But that's an image of the toy up above, and you can see two more below (courtesy of TF08).
-- Robert Downey Jr., Tina Fey and Ben Stiller are in negotiations to lend their voices to a new animated superhero flick called Master Mind. This one, however, focuses on a brilliant superhero villain who loses purpose in life when he accidentally kills his good-guy nemesis. DreamWorks is currently eying a November 5, 2010 release for the film. [Hollywood Reporter]
-- Mickey Rourke has signed on to play a hit man who returns to New York (in disguise as a priest) to complete a botched hit in St. Vincent. Walter Hill, who directed the 1989 Rourke flick Johnny Handsome, is stepping behind the camera, and production is supposed to begin sometime later this year. [Hollywood Reporter]
-- Amber Heard is slowly becoming the next up-and-coming starlet, beating out ladies like Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley for the leading lady role opposite Johnny Depp in Rum Diary, based on the Hunter S. Thompson novel. Heard will play "the free-spirited girlfriend of a fellow journalist who cheats on him with Kemp (Depp), trying to convince him to run away with her." [Hollywood Reporter]
-- According to Upcoming Pixar, the short accompanying Up on the big screen will be called Partly Cloudy, and it will be directed by Peter Sohn (a storyboard artist and animator who also lent his voice to Remy's brother Emile in Ratatouille.) Partly Cloudy, which doesn't have an official plot description yet, will mark Sohn's directorial debut. [Slashfilm]
-- If China.org.cn is to be believed, Anne Hathaway is likely to star in Stephen Chow's (Kung Fu Hustle) next directorial effort. Chow says, "It will be about a superhero, action-packed, special effects-rich, and of course funny."
-- Empire has debuted the 11th Watchmen video journal (which you can watch below), and this time it centers on Rorschach's cool mask. Check it out.
--Ewan McGregor and the beautiful up-and-coming Carey Mulligan have signed to star in The Electric Slide, which unfortunately is not a biopic about the guy and girl who invented that cheesy dance. Nope, this one is based on the Gear magazine article The Yankee Bandit: The Life and Times of Eddie Dodson, World's Great Bank Robber ... and one imagines you can draw your own conclusions from there. McGregor will play a dude, who, in the 1980s, robbed more than 72 bands in the Los Angeles area. [Variety]
-- And finally, we save the best for last: Apparently Universal is not so keen on their four-month-old deal to hang at the cool kids table (read: distribution agreement) with DreamWorks, and they want out. So, it now looks like Disney may pick up where Universal left off, lending some much-needed financing and some distribution ... and hopefully we'll have a happy ending. The only reason mediocre actress Amber Heard got the part in Rum Diary over Scarlett and Kiera, as well as other better actresses... is this...the "pig" director would not cast or look at any flat chested actresses ie: Knightly and others, nor would he consider anyone who wouldn't do full nudity. like Scarlett.
That's the story.
I don't think that qualifies heard as the next big thing.
Just that she goes nude and has decent "boobs".

If you knew The Rum Diary, you'd know that the "willingness to do full nudity" (and to have a certain type of body) is absolutely essential to Chenault (Amber Heard character)...Plus, Amber is a good actress and has screen presence to boot...

You think Scarlett is flat-chested? You really need to do a Google image search sometime and look at some pictures. If that's flat-chested, then Bruce Robinson needs to cast Chesty Morgan in his movie

I don't know how up and coming Amber Heard is but I am not keen on her starring in a the Rum Diary. I get the feeling she got the part because she was cheaper to higher. I'll have to watch the film to judge the final product obviously, but I am not enthused about this casting choice.

I do know The Rum Diary. I do know that there would almost have to be nudity. But, I also know that the character is very complex and with a great actress could be iconic. But, I also know for fact that the director was more concerned about having a "hot" blond who would go nude. That was the main criteria...what does she look like? NOT her acting ability.
I don't think Scarlett would have been able to pull it off either...BUT what I'm saying is this director doesn't give a shit about the character...he is only concerned about Chenault looking like the fantasy.

But aren't you jumping to conclusions a bit too fast? Unless you saw her audition, you can't really say that.
Amber Heard, physically, is a perfect choice for Chenault. If she will pull it off, only time can tell. I could have seen Evan Rachel Wood in the role too, but Amber has the screen presence to make it work.

The director wouldn't see ERW because she wasn't "busty" enough.
That's what I'm saying.
I have seen Heard in other things, and she is mediocre at best.
My problem is the way films have of making the female characters unimportant. Sexy is sexy, it doesn't come in one size fits all packaging. I agree that ERW would have been great, and has the "wild" edge to make the character great.
Abbie Cornish would also have been very good.
Chenault has to have that slightly crazy girl thing about her that is dangerous, and not just "do me".
I work in casting....so, I do have first hand knowledge of this. I find it irritating. Directors and producers can be so short sighted.
