Fanboy Freakout: Chris Nolan Not Making 'Batman 3' His Next Film?!
Filed under: Deals, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand
Just when we thought Warner Bros. was ready to tie Christopher Nolan to a really uncomfortable stool and force him to write the script to the next Batman film comes news that the same studio is actually eager to have the man direct something else first. Variety tells us that Warners is looking to get Nolan to direct a film called Inception (which he also wrote). Described as "a big-scale spec script" and "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind [THR]," there's no word on what this is about* (or whether it involves bats or bat men), but the studio is aiming to begin production on the sci-fi flick this summer for a release the following summer of 2010. One imagines Warners would try to lock Nolan up for both Inception and the next Batman film, and perhaps the only way he'd agree to do the latter was if they let him direct the former first. But that's just wild speculation on our part; fact is, we're dying to know what Inception is about, who it will star and how long it will be until the next Batman movie heats up. Something tells us summer 2011 is the best bet.
What do you think of Nolan making this film his next project? Also, does anyone know what this Inception is or was or is about to become?
*Cinematical reader dd tells us that Inception is about "a war for the colonization of Venus."

It's really not much of a surprise–this is what Nolan did last time, in between Batman flicks: first there was 'Batman Begins', followed by 'The Prestige', and then 'The Dark Knight'. Truth be told, weren't we all expecting Nolan to want to take a break after 'The Dark Knight'? And what happened to those rumors that he was planning a remake of 'The Prisoner'?

I agree with Ben. It's to be expected. I don't think he wants to pigeon-hole himself as "the Batman director". And Warners is smart to try to keep him happy, whether letting him direct this movie first is a stipulation or not.
Besides, this gives him time to craft the story for the third film so that it'll actually be, you know, good. No sense in rushing it and having it fail to meet expectations. Let it ruminate a while, then do it right.

Ben and Mike beat me to it.
What many Batman fans will not appreciate is that Nolan is a fantastic film director and I for one was looking forward to a new Nolan project anyway. Memento, Insomnia and The Prestige are three of the best films of this decade and while Batman is good I would much rather see something new from this very talented man.

I'm cool with it, I agree with everyone above me. He's a very talented director who has more to offer than just Batman movies. Let him work on whatever he wants to, no need to rush another Batman movie.

yeah, its a good idea that Christopher Nolan take a break and just direct another project. This would relieve the stress and anticipation off him and he could just do something that was like his earlier projects where he was doing it for fun and his own interest and doesn't have a whole fanbase looming over his head. no offense to Batman fans. I'm one too. Plus it would give him time to think up fresh ideas and stuff

I'm so happy he's making something else first. I think he'll make a better Batman movie if he has some time away from it. Otherwise he might get tired of it, and the third movie might suck. Plus his non-Bat movies are fantastic and that skeleton of a plotline already has me intrigued.

Blablabla, every other DC movie enters a hellish limbo until it's out, the end.
I kinda saw this coming.

You know, as time goes on, and the more i watch the Dark Knight, i have start to come to the conclusion that i DON"T want another Batman, im a huge fanboy of the genre, but it just doesn't seem right to continue it in my opinion..learn a lesson from what the series became back in the '90's and just say goodbye for good....

I say let him take his time, by all accounts making Dark Knight completely wasted the man. Let's face it, you don't rush art. I'm willing to wait as long as it takes for him to do Batman 3 RIGHT, not some rush job that doesn't see the full creative juices because he didn't recuperate and mull it over long enough.

Seriously this isn't a big deal at all. He made The Prestige between Batman Begins & The Dark Knight, so why would it be a big deal to have a movie between TDK and the next one?
I don't care what his next film is about, I'll probably by in line to see it.

I'm fine with it and I'm sure that if he does the next Batman film it will be better if he takes time to decompress.

I'm calling it now... this IS Batman 3 and it's just a code name for the movie so people don't freak out and can leave Nolan alone during pre-production.

I think Nolan does need a break yes.
Just the reason that they should make a third one and leave it at that is because of the line "You and I are destined to do this forever."
I'm just crossing my fingers that it won't suck.
If Joker isn't in it, what's the point?
