Discuss: "The Best Movie I've Ever Seen in 3-D!"
Filed under: New Releases, Movie Marketing
I've seen a lot of film critics take swipes at Leonard Maltin for the mini-capsule reviews that are found in his annual reference book. But that's pretty stupid, considering that Mr. Maltin has a team of editors who write those, plus the book is not about deep and insightful film criticism. It's a reference guide for people who want quick info, and it's a damn good one, too. Beyond that, it'd be pretty hard to quantify the excellent work Maltin has done as a film analyst over the years. So I say all that so that you don't think I'm being rude here: Maltin's quote regaring Coraline is "The Best Movie I've Ever Seen in 3-D!," which is the sort of blurb that publicists would kill for. But under a little more scrutiny ... what is Maltin actually saying? That this film is better than Amityville 3, Comin' at Ya!, Friday the 13th Part 3, Jaws 3, The Man Who Wasn't There, Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn, My Bloody Valentine, Parasite, Scar, Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, Spy Kids 3, Starchaser: The Legend of Orin, and Treasure of the Four Crowns ... and I'm not even including all the schlock from the mid'-'50s!
House of Wax (1953) and Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) are the closest I could come to quality, but I guess "The Best Movie I've Ever Seen in 3-D since 1954!" is a bit too wordy for the Coraline posters. Maltin is probably including stuff like Beowulf and The Polar Express, but to me it's not a 3-D movie unless it was made specifically (if not solely) for 3-D exhibition. But feel free to argue that point or remind me of some 3-D flicks I forgot to mention. That's what the comments section is for.
Lastly, I still haven't seen Coraline. I know, I suck.

I finally saw Coraline last night in 3-D, and I have to say, it's a visual masterpiece! Just wait until you see the garden scene where the flowers come alive (not the mention glow)!

I agree that "Coraline" is the best movie I've seen in 3-D, but as you note, the competition is not all that fabulous. But I'd rather think of it as a good movie than rate it against all the other 3-D films.

Since I have only seen one movie in 3-D (Not for lack of trying. Be nice if I could do it at home), the best movie I have seen in 3-D is My Bloody Valentine 3-D. Good use of technology to make an event movie. It was pure entertainment, an area in which other movies fail to deliver.
I wish I could see Coraline in 3-D as well, but I'm pretty sure it will not be in 3-D on Blu-ray, which is a real shame.

Haven't seen Coraline yet, though I suppose I might as well. I've intentionally avoided seeing Nightmare Before Christmas for an irrational reason relating to the Hot Topic crowd, which has equally irrationally turned me off on either picture. I should correct that prejudice.
Personally my favorite 3-D experience was Monster House. I was stunned by that flick, where as most other 3-D experiences benefited from the third dimension on a superficial level while still feeling gimmicky. Monster House, however, ironed it all out.

I commented on this site that it was the best thing I had seen in 3-D, though I did stipulate the best use of the new Real D technology so all those other ones Scott mentions don't count for me. :-)
Bloody Valentine was fun and all...in that gimmicky B movie sort of way, but Coraline was just incredible. It's not a gimmick--it just draws you into the world of the film that much more.

3-D doesn't work well with stop motion. It betrays it to a certain degree. Because the artists do such a fantastic job and stop motion is shot at really high resolution; if you play it back in anything better than(or at) HD quality on any calibrated display it will look completely 3D on its own.
Furthermore since the effect isn't forced you get a greater amount of depth, so it looks like you can reach into the screen and pull out a puppet. 3-D works with CG and some live action, but not stop motion.
And Caroline has it's own problems, yes the production design and art is beautiful. But the film is boring, it's stuck in 'slow' from beginning to end. Nothing is exciting the score is absent when it shouldn't be, and the voice acting is so lifeless it's actually painful. Caroline isn't that good to begin with, I really wanted to like ti too, I just couldn't.
BTW - Best 3-D movie "I've seen" is My Bloody Valentine, the movie does need the 3-D to be entertaining, but it does use it in creative and effective ways that are actually beneficial to the storytelling. It's still a gimmick, but this is the only instance where I've seen it used as an actual storytelling device.
If you love Coraline or were severely disappointed with it, the movie can stand on its own(better in my opinion) without 3-D.

I completely agree. Coraline is much better than The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

U2 3D. Hands down. So worth the trek to the IMAX. More entertaining then anything nominated for Best Picture. Especially when Bono reaches out of the screen and "wipes your tears away." Awesomeness.

The best 3D movie I have seen is the old classic from Alfred Hitchcock; "Dial M for murder". The use of 3D as a almost subliminal tool for greater storytelling is wonderful. The closeups and trackingshots in the apartment makes the location a better place to be than in the ordinary 2D-version. No pingpong-balls or sneezes out towards the audience. Its all about drama, not gimmick.
I also like "U2 3D". Great personalities, music and atmosphere makes it a wonderful experience in 3D.
I love live-action 3D (non-animated) and the possibilities it gives a a filmmaker.

As someone who has seen nearly every digital 3D feature (I avoided only Hannah Montana and Fly Me to the Moon last year) and someone who writes about it constantly, I still say Monster House was the best so far. Followed by Bolt. Neither exploited the technology too horribly and each gained some great depth and perspective from the 3D. I have yet to see Coraline, though.

I've seen coroline and thought it was one of the worst movies of the year and I seriously wanted to walk out -- even if it was in 3D and I'm not the kind of person to think of that lightly. Kidnapping, mutilations -- not exactly a kids movie and a boring one at that.
This is nowhere near the best 3D movie to see.
The best so far is the very good My bloody valentine -- which is surprisingly good and well acted.

Are all those movies even listed in Leonard Maltin's book? He goes out of his way to leave out all the MST3K type movies, which are the ones I am primarily interested in. I mean, everyone has heard of 'Gone With the Wind', not everyone has heard of 'The Beast of Yucca Flats'.
Coraline was excellent, but I went out of my way to see it in a 2D theatre, as I find 3D gimmicky and annoying.

how come everyone forgets Monster House???
I had such a blast watching it... sure it's not the best movie... but 3D made it so much fun that when I left theater, I kept saying to everyone "it IS the best movie-going experience"
Caroline was cool, and it had a few "damn" moments, but overall it is just a good movie (not a great one)
