Do You Love the Trailer for 'I Love You, Beth Cooper'?
Filed under: Comedy, Romance, 20th Century Fox, Trailers and Clips
I'd like to think that our own Eric D. Snider knows what's funny, if only twice a day, so when he recommended Larry Doyle's "I Love You, Beth Cooper" last summer, I swiftly added it to my List of Stuff to Read Eventually and have succeeded in putting it off ever since. (I did, however, get around to "Apathy and Other Small Victories," and was consequently amused. Maybe I'm only off on these things by a year or so.)Anyway, it's been long enough that we're getting a movie of the same name, and Fox has posted the first trailer on its official website -- scary timing, given Eugene's From Page to Screen column last week, on which Doyle himself wrote: "The first trailer should be popping up on the net any day now." (Oh. Guess I should've read that part first.)
Anyway, it does seem to be the PG-13 all-in-one-night humiliation fest that all previous descriptions had suggested. Paul Rust does look like the ideal dweeby valedictorian, and Hayden Panettiere does look like exactly the kind of girl one might throw it all out there for. (Did I say that out loud?)
Like it or not, I Love You, Beth Cooper opens July 10th, and should not be confused with this year's I Love You, Man or I Love You, Phillip Morris.

Looks a lot like the movie that played in my brain as I read the book over the course of three bathroom visits. That's actually a compliment to the novel because it usually takes me a dozen bathroom visits to finish a book.
I like that the trailer has spoilers that are only spoilers if you've read the book and therefore aren't really spoilers at all. Marketing is hard!
Plus the gymnasium looks just like I pictured it.
Looking forward to this one. And for me to say that about a teen-themed comedy flick ... well, I just don't normally say that sort of thing. Is Hayden P. old enough for me to legally (mentally) drool over? Please say yes.

Looks a little more over-the-top than I would have liked. And my biggest worry—that Paul Rust is too old and too tall to play Denis Cooverman—was confirmed by the trailer.
I will say that Hayden Panettiere looks like she may pleasantly surprise me with her performance.

I have to agree. It looks too over the top. The book was The Office meets Dazed and Confused with a great blend of awkwardness and sweetness. But it looks like my worst fears of Chris Columbus directing have been realized; it looks like every other teen comedy. Though it looks like Hayden P. nailed the character from the book... good for her.

Didn't read the book, but this looks like some fun, and I can relate to the main character so there's a positive. Probably check this out for the hell of it.

Watching the trailer, I did wonder what this 34-year-old guy was doing graduating from high school.
"Hayden Panettiere does look like exactly the kind of girl one might throw it all out there for."
You know it.
