Scenes We Love: Gladiator
Filed under: Action, Oscar Watch, Scenes We Love

All this week we'll be highlighting some of our favorite scenes from Oscar-winning films and performances leading up to this year's Academy Awards on Sunday night.
Even though there are plenty of people who think Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe may not have deserved Oscar gold back in 2001, I will respectfully disagree ... and the opening scene of Gladiator is why. Say what you will about the film's hyped-up machismo, uneven pacing, or cavalcade of accents, but you have to admire a flick that in under 10 minutes can make you feel like you're ready to charge into a battle to the death. Not to mention that this scene is responsible for making the phrase "Hold the line!" something a lot cooler than just a song by Toto.
The success of Gladiator mainly rests on the shoulders of Crowe, who manages to make you give a damn about a relatively 2-D character. So even though the box-office and the Academy rarely agree, I still think Ridley and company deserved the Oscar for creating a 'thinking man's action hero'. Gladiator might not be a perfect film, but thanks to this opening scene, it has earned a permanent place on my list of movie favorites.
Gladiator trivia (via IMDB)
- Among the chanting of the Germanic hordes at the beginning of the film are samples of the Zulu war chant from the film Zulu (1964).
- The wounds on 'Russell Crowe's face after the opening battle scene are real, caused when his horse startled and backed him into tree branches.
- Mel Gibson was offered, but turned down the part of Maximus.

Thank you! I'm a huge fan of 'Almost Famous' and it did not get enough love during its release, but 'Gladiator' is a spectacular movie. The visual effects still look amazing to this day, the melodrama is compelling, and nothing gets you more pumped up than this amazing Hans Zimmer score. The rest of the movie is fine, but I agree. This is the best scene of the movie.

I first saw Gladiator with my husband. I had never seen Russell Crowe before, but within 30 seconds that tough, yet tender face had me riveted. Who WAS this guy ? I turned to my husband and we both agreed we were in for a hell of a ride.
Bottom line - Crowe deserved his Oscar.

What else should a film about, and named, Gladiator have, but a lot of hyped up machismo? Did some critics think it should have been more metrosexual sensitive?
Actually, women love the film too, for it's tender and testosterone moments and let's not forget the emergence of a new Thinking Woman's Favorite Bastard ... the amazing Russell Crowe, who won hearts of females the world over and sword fights in equal measure.
It's a classic film..... and was I entertained? Oh yes. Still am.

Russell Crowe's performance is constantly mesmerizing with or without dialogue (which is absolutely exquisite). His character will live as a tribute to how acting can reach unthinkable and absolutely breathtaking emotional beats every time a once-in-a-lifetime actor is on screen.
GREAT FREAKIN FILM... SIMPLY THE BEST CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD.

"At my signal, unleash hell!!' is my favourite line along with Mimi.
The opening sequence in Gladiator is one of my favourite scenes from any film. I love the music, the action sequence and the respect that they show for Maximus. The direction is awesome and the fact that this scene was filmed in a National Trust area in my very own Surrey, UK brings it home to me. I wish i could have been there to watch the filming.
Does anyone know what happened to Maximus's dog though?! I think he survived the battle but then disappears!

Thats what I came here to ask David. I love this movie, but the dog always bothered me. Why place such emphasis on it during the opening battle sequence if you're never going to show or talk about him again? It always struck me as out of place, and seemed like the ploy of a lesser film. Basically the dog is just there for the coolness factor, which seems a little over the top and unnecessary given how damn cool the scene was to begin with.
Oh and Jessica, there is nothing cooler then Toto's Hold the Line. Shame on you.

I fully agree, Russell and Sir Ridley deserved all the prizes they got for "Gladiator", particularly the "Oscar". The opening sequence is among my favourite scenes, but I would give a special grade to the bird thing that is particularly moving, I can't help but thinking of the bird drawing episode in "3.10 to Yuma" ...Besides, It is definitely impressive to enjoy an exceptional soundtrack so well balanced with the respect and admiration demonstrated by the soldiers towards their "Gov" together with the action that follows. An outstanding film and exceptionally talented actor !

I like this movie a ton, but I dare say it's not the best cinematic experience ever. And I was a fan of Mr. Crowe way before the movie. However, after the battle, after the Emperor dies and the guards take him into the woods, after he asks for a 'soldiers death' that's when he came to life for me. When he comes from around that tree and yells 'Praetorian!.' Well, I turned to my friend and said 'how f'ing cool is he?'

I read/heard somewhere Mel Gibson sent a letter to Ridley Scott in answer to his query: "To old, mate."

Love Russell, love him.Was a fan way before Gladiator. He's not really beautiful or handsome, but those EYES, and his VOICE (even if it's an Australian accent har!)What is it about him? Even overweight and older hes still compelling. He really should look better after himself-he's after all in that industry where looks count.Seem very down to earth person...
