11:55 p.m.: Well, that's that. The show seemed to lose its luster post-Memoriam (PS: Ledger was in last year's montage), but man, did it get off to one peppy start. Maybe something good came of this recession after all...
11:53 p.m.: Best Picture is Slumdog Millionaire.
11:49 p.m.: The Spielberg-introduced Best Picture montage compares Frost/Nixon to Citizen Kane, Slumdog Millionaire to 12 Angry Men, The Reader to Life is Beautiful, Milk to Braveheart (er...) and Network (better...), and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to just about everything except for Forrest Gump.

11:48 p.m.: And lastly, Penn gives it up for Rourke. Nicely done.
11:47 p.m.: Penn champions Obama. My roommates happen to be playing him off a cappella.
11:46 p.m.: Penn just called out all those who support the gay marriage ban. I won't touch that one.
11:44 p.m.: Sean Penn to Academy: "You commie, homo-loving sons of guns..."
11:43 p.m.: Best Actor goes to... c'mon, Mickey... nope, Sean Penn. Well-deserved, but still...
11:39 p.m.: Robert De Niro on Sean Penn: "I'll never know how he ever got all those jobs as straight men."
11:35 p.m.: Winslet just won for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, in my book.
11:31 p.m.: Best Actress goes to... Kate motherfraggin' Winslet! Let me read to you in a bathtub! Please!
11:27 p.m.: Okay, these one-on-one nominee tribute bits may be growing on me. (They still take up time. Hour four, folks!)
11:22 p.m.: Pal points out that Danny Boyle, as with the Golden Globes, has forgotten to thank his credited co-director. Eek!
11:20 p.m.: Best Directing goes to Danny Boyle, who shouldn't rush away from the stage so quickly. After all, Best Picture's coming soon...
11:19 p.m.: Anyone remember that "Bitch Pleeze" celeb blogger bit on SNL last week? That's the look David Fincher just gave the world.
11:12 p.m.: (Okay, sorry, this is actually really tender and touching and stuff.)
11:11 p.m.: Queen Latifah goes all In Memoriam on our ass. Way to bring down the house, Ms. Queen.
11:07 p.m.: Liam Neeson co-presents Best Foreign Language Film, promises to break every back and kick every ass afterwards. The winner: Taken! -- wait, no, Departures. A pity I could only vouch for The Class and Waltz with Bashir (both worthy of winning).
11:02 p.m.: Song goes to Slumdog Millionaire, for "Jai Ho."
11:00 p.m.: Medley! Nice!
10:59 p.m.: Whatever the outcome, the winner for Best Original Song still SHOULDA BEEN Springsteen for The Wrestler.
10:58 p.m.: Is that John Legend subbing for Peter Gabriel on "Down to Earth"? Nice.
10:56 p.m.: Alicia Keys says Original Score instead of Song. Boom goes the dynamite indeed.
10:54 p.m.: Score goes to Slumdog Millionaire. I used to love that movie...
10:51 p.m.: Whatever the outcome, the winner for Best Original Score still SHOULDA BEEN The Dark Knight. Or Cloverfield. Or... (medley continues)
10:46 p.m.: Jerry Lewis' speech was short, sweet, and sincere. Every other winner: take note.
10:44 p.m.: I can't snark the sick kids montage, man.
10:42 p.m.: Eddie Murphy gives the Jean Hersholt Award to Jerry Lewis, who inadvertently pre-saved Ed's career by making The Nutty Professor the first time.
10:36 p.m.: Best Editing goes to... Slumdog Millionaire. This guy looks just like his award.
10:32 p.m.: Also: "Boom goes the dynamite."
10:30 p.m.: God, I'm missing a "Flight of the Conchords" ep with Kristen Wiig for this... Oh, I kid, I love you people.

Watching someone like Sean Penn call on viewers to think, is excellent. He was very well spoken. I'm not of the camp that belives actors should shut up and accept their awards. It's words such as Mr. Penn's that make me feel that I've just watched something of value. Consumers for advocacy do exist and some of us wish to see important issues and boundaries being pushed in the biggest spotlights possible.
Who tells us to think these days? To think with wisdom. Who holds us accountable? The media is one big feedback loop which is too often marketing off of peoples weakness and negative emotions. The art of acting if anything is one of the greatest forums for the human(e) message. What better a place than the oscars to have some choice words of criticism for the millions of passive observers.
And ERIC remember,
CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL ;)

Two hours in I can honesty say this is one of the best Oscar telecasts ever. Hugh Jackman is charming, the opening really worked, the choice to bring the viewer into the filmmaking process, the montages (heck, even the music under the montages!) everything is really well done. Even the banter is better written this year. I am enjoying the 5 past winners present the acting award bit too. Kudos to all involved.

I so agree. I watched the Academy Awards for many years and I have enjoyed everything about this one. The set design, the closeness of the audience, and Hugh Jackman holding it all in place. The five presenters for supporting actress and actor is a brilliant change. Great Job. ,

Found this website through google and have been following along. Great comments. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this year's Oscars. Sorry to the blogger from last hour, but I loved the musical number with Beyonce.
Overall, great production, clever banter, funny and good-looking presenters (hey, this IS tv) and good drama. Montages are very well done, and the flow FEELs right. Hugh's opening number goes down as my favorite ever. Don't usually watch these things all the way through, but haven't changed the channel yet. And I love the sprinkle of mega stars with comebacks with newbies.
Still hoping Button wins best picture instead of Slumdog, but I know I am likely alone in that one.

Spoke too soon. Dear God, what was with that horrid musical interlude? Why take Lunesta with that music?

I think this was the best Oscar show in years. I think Hugh Jackman did a great job and was the best presenter in years. I think the Ben Stiller immitation of Joaquin Phoenix was the worst moment on the show. I thought he was stoned out of his mind or drunk and had no idea what he was susposed to be spoofing. I have the opposite viewpoints of Movietone, which I think has it all wrong. Queen Lafitia was the best spot on the show. I had no idea she could sing that good. She should make a cd of that song. I hope they invite Hugh back again...David Letterman was by far the worst presenter in Oscar history and that is say something, as many have been almost as bad.
