My Favorite Unmade Movie, 'Hot Tub Time Machine,' Has a Cast!
Back in December, I told you about a new film that was about to go into production under the title Hot Tub Time Machine. You agreed with me that Hot Tub Time Machine is a fantastic title for a movie. You also loved the premise: three grown-up guys visit the hot tub where they once partied, discover it is now a time machine, and travel back to their raunchy heyday. The film's writer, Josh Heald, even contacted us to vouch for the awesomeness of his screenplay. Remember all this? Of course you do.And now we have an update! According to Production Weekly -- actually, to be specific, according to Production Weekly's Twitter feed (welcome to 21st-century journalism!), the three leads have been cast. Dipping into the H.G. Wells Jacuzzi will be John Cusack, Rob Corddry, and Craig Robinson (best known as Darryl on The Office). Corddry and Robinson have popped up recently in films like Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay and Zack and Miri Make a Porno. But has Cusack ever really done a raucous R-rated sex comedy? I'm intrigued.
The film was originally announced with co-directors Sean Anders and John Morris (who made last year's underseen Sex Drive) attached, but Production Weekly's Tweet says it's now being directed by Steve Pink, who made 2006's Accepted. We'll look into that. Either way, as long as it's called Hot Tub Time Machine, and as long as Josh Heald wasn't lying hack when he promised it was funny, it sounds promising. Filming starts in April in Vancouver.

This script is terrible. The title is by far the most worthwhile element of the piece.
That said, if anyone can turn it around, it's Craig Robinson...

That is a great title. As I started reading this post that was my first thought, but I was not expecting too much more until i read the cast. I like Corddry and Cusack can be good in the right project, but Robinson is great. He is not always on the Office, but he probably is near the top in screen time to laughs ratio on the show. He was also good in a small role in Pineapple Express.
Not too excited by the prospective director of Accepted or Sex Drive, but it has potential to be funny if the script is not bad. Hopefully Kent is wrong. Of course they could always do a re-write. I do think it will be interesting to see if Cusack could pull off that sort of role. It would seem to be more suited to Billy Bob Thornton than Cusack at first, but maybe Cusack will surprise everyone.

I don't know about this story. It could either be great or complete shit. Just as long as it doesn't screw up John Cusack: I love that guy.

"Raunchy" is of course a subjective term, but as far as Cusack appearing in comedies ... his last was probably the sadly underrated "Ice Harvest," but you need only go back to his younger days to witness the comedy chops. Or "Grosse Pointe Blank."
I hope this flick turns out to be the next "Bill & Ted," just as a lesson to people: Don't knock a movie before it's, y'know, actually a movie.

That's a good point about Cusack maybe they could make him a hitman ala Ice Harvest and Grosse Pointe. Sometimes the least obvious casting choice turns out to be the best one. After seeing Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder I think it would be interesting to see him in a movie like this. It would never happen though.
