Mel Gibson Redeems Self with Trailer for 'The Colonel'
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Drama, War, Trailers and Clips
After covering the Oscars this past Sunday for what seemed like hours (because they were), I watched the montage of 2009 films to come before promptly shutting off my set. Well, leave it to Weinberg to point out shortly thereafter that Mel Gibson was going to appear on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and leave it to me to go ahead and grab my remote like the bell-hearing dog that I am. It wasn't anything against Kimmel -- even if I think the funniest thing he's ever done was Sarah Silverman (and we all know how that turned out) -- but out of morbid curiosity, I went ahead and put it on.
Holy hell, Kimmel and an oddly bearded Gibson were swapping "shalom" jokes and frankly discussing his infamous DUI incident before Kimmel plugged the alternate endings on the Passion of the Christ Blu-ray. Then came the capper: a glimpse of Mel's latest secretive project, which we've embedded above and found to be a surprisingly hilarious look at romance, revenge, and secret recipes.
What do you guys and girls think? Does this endear either Gibson or Kimmel the slightest in your eyes?

Made me laugh. I've always thought Gibson was funny. Still do.
Yes, I'm Jewish.

"Love him then...IN HELL!!"
I love it. I still wonder why the hell he's sporting that facial hair -- was it REALLY just for this?!

Hm. No. Gibson is still asshole. Kimmel is still unfunny.

I've always felt that Mel Gibson was a good guy, with an incredible sense of humor. This further proves it.

No, Gibson is a serious dick, but I'd say he's pretty funny and a fine actor.

So you're saying Gibson should be forgiven for whatever homophobic or anti-Semitic comments he's made because his new movie looks good?
Whether his behavior off-screen had an effect on you or not, that's a really poor argument.

Not at all, but I'm not going to deny that I laughed. Neither did Scott, and he's as much reason to take issue with Gibson's comments as anyone else.
And I think it's pretty clear that this isn't actually his next movie... but when that one does come around, I intend to judge it on the merits of what's on the screen.

He's trying to mend his ways and we should give him a chance to do better. He apologized to everyone and he's trying to stay sober. He's still a very gifted man.

Got it. Thanks for replying. I think it was the post title more than anything was misleading.
To be frank, I'm not sure how I feel about whether you should decry a work of art (in the broadest sense) because you find a participant distateful or not. I certainly can be held guilty for judging a work on its own merits as you say, even though I find qualities of the originator loathsome (T.S. Eliot for example).

If all of us were judged by what we've said in the past, then heck, we'd probably all be in prison. My Father certainly would be, same as many, many friends. Then again, we like to judge without living someone else's life. Did Mel kill babies? No. Was he drunk? Yes.
He's a fantastic actor and as I don't know him personally, I'm not going to judge. If I knew him personally, I still wouldn't judge as that's not up to me.

I've got friends that have personally said much worse things to my face then Mel said while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. I'm not saying that what he said was okay, but lets be fair and all admit that we've made mistakes. Time to move on and all start lining up for this Colonel movie he's releasing. Looks awesome to me. Looks like the kind of movie where I'm gonna need to bring a box of fried chicken to to wipe away the tears.

This is possibly the funniest thing I have seen this year. Thank you, Mel, for raising the bar yet again!
