Does Gore Verbinski Have a 'Clue'?
Filed under: Deals, Mystery & Suspense, Remakes and Sequels

Nothing is sacred. Get ready, because I'm sure Gin, The Movie is on its way, as well as remakes of Gone with the Wind and Citizen Kane, plus someone with enough cojones to try and replicate Bruce Campbell's Ash.
The Hollywood Reporter posts that following in the footsteps of Monopoly, Candy Land, and Ouiga Board, we're getting Clue. Or, rather, more Clue, since I'm sure you all know that we've already had an amazingly wonderful adaptation of the board game starring the likes of Tim Curry, Michael McKean, and the late, great Madeline Kahn.
Undaunted (or perhaps even enthused by the first flick's cult status), Universal is moving ahead with a new Clue feature, and Gore Verbinski is in final negotiations to direct and produce the project. That means it won't be a modest feature of murder, ropes, candlesticks, and intrigue, but some sort of rip-roaring big budget murder movie. But even if Verbinski did rein in the post-Pirates urge and make a low-scale project, it's still been done. Sure, there are lots of directions Clue can go, making use of the locations, guests, and murder weapons, but there's simply no group of comedic minds that can compare to the original. Perhaps they can go the more serious route, and I hope they do, because I'll cry if they try to replace my Madeline.
Do you like the original? Are you interested in a sequel? Do you want to throw your box of Clue at Universal?

I absolutely ADORE the original movie, I can quote large chunks of it (and often do), and it's up there as one of my favourite movies of all time.
So, no, I don't think they should "remake/reimagine/reinterpret/reengineer" it. With all the (I'm guessing) thousands of scripts that would float around in Hollywood, do they honestly expect us to believe that there's NOTHING worth making into a movie and instead they have to continually remake stuff that's already been made?
Lets hope that this idea never comes to fruition!

I'm with you. This is one of my faves. There's no remaking/remigining/whatevering this movie. Ugh. This is so horrible.

Hey Joshua,
I did not read your lists before making my own comment. I love both of them. I'd be mixing and matching from them... Leslie Mann as Mrs. White and Susan Sarandon as Mrs. Peacock would be perfect. I would have a lot of trouble selecting because both redheads listed are fantastic choices, the only one I'd add in now that I've thought about it is Christina Hendricks.

heck i would even be up for a grindhouse style clue, give me two 90 minute movies with the casts above and you would have a huge hit. have the writers and directors sit down and play a game of clue and write their version from that .

I think that there could be another Clue movie as long as they showed some sincere restraint. This movie should concern itself with finding an incredible cast, an incredible house, and a fantastic costume designer. Verbinski is an excellent director... remember The Ring and Curse of the Black Pearl are excellent flicks.
If he wants to do this I've got to imagine that he's interested in putting together something that could fit next to the original. We are talking about a movie based on a board game... remember all the explanation necessary is that its a new game. Don't disacknowledge the original just step away from it.
I hope aside from the main characters we are given an opportunity to see the ones written into the story just for the original movie like, Yvette.
Imagine Eva Green, or Salma Hayek playing Colleen Camp's role. I think Ms. Scarlett should definitely be a toss up between Amy Adams or Isla Fisher. Mr. Green - Paul Rudd... having said that none of these work without a fantastic Wadsworth/Mr. Body combination. I don't know who'd be selected but that casting choice to me dictates the entire flick.

Clue is my favorite movie. Ever. Of all time. Absolutely. EVER.
I am quite capable of ignoring the heck out of this remake, which I may have to do to preserve my own little happy world.
With that said; I don't think they have any chance of making it a successful comedy in the shadow of the original. None. I'd be curious to see how they pull off a serious adaptation, though... that might be neat. They may even use the most recent Clue game release as their basis. Hum.

I remember when I was younger, I found a copy of Clue and bought it, expecting a ridiculous movie based of a board game. I was stunned when I found out that the movie was actually amazing. It's become one of my favorites in recent years, and I still watch it frequently.
I'm really curious about how this'll work out, and if they're going for a reboot, sequel, or just plain ignoring the first one existed.
I'm not giving up hope right now, but I hope that it can be as a good as the original.

I'm of two minds about this. On one hand, the original is sacred to me, on the other hand I like the concept enough to be interested in what a new version would look like.
Def more interested in this than any other board game movie. Just hope it is good and different enough to avoid too much comparison with the first.

If it was another comedy I could go for some of Joshua's suggestions but with a few minor changes.
Mr. Body – Vince Vaughn
Wadsworth – Steve Carrell
Miss Scarlet – Amy Adams
Ms. White – Leslie Mann
Mrs. Peacock – Jane Lynch
Cornel Mustard – Will Ferrell
Mr. Green – Paul Rudd or Jason Bateman
Professor Plum – Will Arnet
Yvette – Isla Fisher
Preacher – Seth Rogen or Jonah Hill
