Scenes We Hate: Kill Bill Vol. 2
Filed under: Action, Quentin Tarantino, NSFW, Trailers and Clips
Erik Davis' puke-filled Scenes We Hate debut inspired my offering. I'm not a horror or gore connoisseur like my other co-editor, Scott Weinberg, but I can hold my own when it comes to blood and guts. There are a few exceptions ... and one of those is definitely anything to do with eyeballs.
When Elle Driver turned up in an eyepatch in Kill Bill Vol 1, I should have suspected we'd see some eye-oriented gore, but I was left unprepared and downright sick with what happened to her other eye. Actually, it was one of the only times I've heard an entire audience groan and retch along with me -- and it wasn't the plucking (although that was pretty bad), it was the squishing. Once was enough for me. I close my eyes every time she flings it down on the carpet.
Actually, I really do hate this entire fight scene -- it's depraved, disgusting, and unspeakably painful. Squirting limbs and gallons of blood are all well and good, but a can of tobacco spit and a visit to Budd's toliet bowl is just foul. Needless to say, this clip is not for the weak and it's definitely NSFW.

WOW do I disagree. This scene is awesome. The whole "too cramped for a sword" shtick was excellent. And the way it ends. With all the anticipation of the sword fight ending so suddenly. Awesome Scene.

Well I think that the article's wirter didn't exactly find it a bad scene, as much as a gross scene.

I love this scene so much that I knew every word of every line even though it was in some other language here. (Portugese?)
"Bitch, you don't have a future."

I feel like I'm saying it more often now, but I'm really starting to think this is a way to get more hits. Put "Hate" and "Kill Bill" in your title, and see how many people come running to scream at you.
Hopefully pointing it out as many times as I am now having to isn't going to get me banned, but it needs to be said. Quit flame-baiting, Cinematical... it's trashy and silly at the same time. You're getting too old for this.

Well, I don't know about the intent of the feature as a whole, but I didn't mean this particular installment as flame bait. I posted it as a laugh to see if anyone else was as freaked out by squished eyeballs as I am. That's all. I didn't expect anyone to take this as some kind of extreme statement on Kill Bill. Frankly, I try to steer clear of that because nothing drives me more nuts than irrational Internet emotion.
I can only speak for myself and what I post here, but all I do is write it up, give my take, and hope that it hits a middle ground of sane discourse when it goes online. I don't like extremes of any kind.

Look, I know it's an awesome scene -- I don't deny that at all, nor do I think it was badly constructed, or out of place in the film.
And it's not so much the fight scene (and I was half-joking) as the squished eyeball. She *squishes an eyeball between her toes.* It sends shivers up my spine. Hence, a scene I hate. It doesn't mean the scene is BAD, it just means I get a little green watching it. Severed heads, guts, brains...these things don't bother me. Eyeballs though...yikes.
It's this weird thing called personal opinion.

Damn Liz.....think you might've hit a nerve with the eye-gore enthusiasts : )
Guys, she's only saying she doesn't like eyeball squishing (and really, who does?), not that the scene was bad.
I know some of you may find it hard to believe, but it is possible to draw multiple emotions from a scene.
Yes, that whole scene is awesomely bad-ass, but it IS "depraved, disgusting, and unspeakably painful."
Elisabeth's reaction towards the scene is probably what Tarantino was aiming for. And I know this because it's the same reaction I had and I'm neverever wrong....NEVEREVER !!

Opinions are like assholes and so is anyone who can say it's a scene they hate. I hate many scenes in movies because they are bad , they kill the momentum or insult my intelligence but no one who loves cinema can hate this scene, it's unique and smart, unexpected, brilliant. You may be moved by it, maybe disgusted and there for challenged, but hate is a word you shouldn't apply here.

Well, unfortunately the feature isn't called "Scenes That Really Gross Me Out." Hate was used rather glibly here.
Can we tone down the name calling, please? This post wasn't supposed to be a serious condemnation of Kill Bill, or the scene. It was my personal ick factor, nothing more.
Disagreeing is one thing, but come on. Let's calm down. Name-calling and insults are really taking it too far.

This scene is classic, Classic, CLASSIC! The eyeball being squished is a PERFECT ending to this scene, and unless you are a little girl, it couldn't possibly offend. Oh way....sorry Elisabeth...I forgot.

Right on time comes the sexism. Thanks, Jim. I'll remember that "girly" thing the next time I see a manly man turn white at the sight of blood.

Not much chance of that, as you'll have your eyes closed.

Elisabeth,
It's nice that you're backtracking now and all, but the following comments CERTAINLY didn't sound like you were kidding:
"Actually, I really do hate this entire fight scene -- it's depraved, disgusting, and unspeakably painful. Squirting limbs and gallons of blood are all well and good, but a can of tobacco spit and a visit to Budd's toliet bowl is just foul."
Your follow-up comments are almost political speak, realizing you offended a bunch of people, and now trying to pretend you didn't insult them in the first place.

Well, if you're actually offended and insulted by my personal opinions of a particularly gruesome moment of film, then I'm not sure what to say .... except there ARE other things in life worth getting upset over.

This scene is great. The scene that gets me is being buried alive. I am sure Tarantino will have some great and disturbing scenes in Inglourious Basterds

This whole column is just dumb- Scenes We Hate. Um this is a movie website. If you hate anything about the movies- especially scenes that a lot of people would consider great- you should look for another blog.
