UPDATE: The first trailer for Public Enemies has just debuted online. Check it out over at Apple (or watch it below) and let us know what you think.
The first official poster (remember the unofficial, fan-made one?) for Public Enemies has arrived over at MSN (along with a host of new images), and the first thing I thought of was how similar it was to one of The Dark Knight's Joker posters, minus a crazed look from Enemies star, Johnny Depp. Perhaps Universal is looking to borrow some awesomeness from last summer's biggest movie in the hopes that Public Enemies becomes this summer's most talked-about piece of coolness.
Directed by Michael Mann (Heat), Public Enemies tells the real-life story of gangster John Dillinger (Depp), and how, due to his (and his pal's) multi-state crime spree during the 1930s, the US government had no choice but to create the FBI -- whose top agent, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), was the one assigned to finally track down Dillinger and bring him to justice. The film also stars Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, Billy Crudup and more. This is a very cool story, and for those who do not know it, might I suggest locating the History Channel program in your channel guide that talks all about the formation of the FBI and the chase to nab Dillinger -- it's called 18 Months of Mayhem; find more info on it here.
Check out a larger image of the poster and a couple images below, then head over to MSN to see the rest. Public Enemies hits theaters on July 1.

This... actually doesn't look that great. I was excited by the premise and the stellar cast, but the trailer isn't really doing it for me.

ew looks like mann still using that ugly dv he used for miami vice- everything is so videoy whenever things move.....yuck.
i wish filmmakers would stop using digital video until they figure out how to get rid of that horrible ghosting whenever there's motion.especially in the case for action movies.

My only question is why Is johnny Depp CGI when he is jumping over the Counter? If you watch it in HD it is clearly A fake face.

I'm definetely in. Johnny Depp's awesome. Its interesting that he took this role because its like a mainstream type movie but at the same time, he's playing his favorable role of the outsider

It's interesting that Mann chose to use DV on this. I'm not sure, but, films change, especially from the way they look in the trailer. Figure for a period piece you wouldn't choose to use something as clean as DV for those scenes. But, Mann is such a serious director I'm sure he has some explanation for it.

Looks really good. I like the DV shooting, colors look really vibrant. Did you see the black coat that Depp is wearing? Very vivid, blacks looked amazing.
From the trailer this could be Depp's Oscar film.

Huh. The movie sounds really great, and I'll definitely be seeing it, but I admit the picture quality is weirding me out too. It really does look a bit modern for a period film. Kind of reminds me of documentaries what with the handheld cameras.
