Marmaduke Joins Garfield in the Cinematic Hall of Shame
Filed under: Animation, Deals, Comic/Superhero/Geek
If Garfield's trip to the big screen didn't burn your retinas enough, it's time for another comic animal (and friend of the famous cat) to make his way to the big screen. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Fox is whipping up a feature adaptation of Marmaduke, which director Tom Dey is developing. Dey has three features to his name: Shanghai Noon, Showtime, and Failure to Launch. That should give you an idea of the tone of this adaptation, and since Garfield was CG, I'd bet my bottom dollar that Marmaduke will follow the trend. However, as of right now THR says that it hasn't been decided whether the famous dog will be "live-action, animated, or a mutt."
Now for your Marmaduke-ignorant people out there: He's a Great Dane comically created back in the '50s who lives with the Winslow family and goes by his own set of mischievous rules.
Considering the horrors of projects like Garfield, The Chipmunks, and The Cat in the Hat, I'm 100% not keen on this idea. That being said, at least they're not taking my beloved comic ... yet. Hollywood, I'm warning you right now: If you make a crappy Calvin and Hobbes feature film, the voodoo dolls are coming out.

You do realize that some hollywood producer is going to read this and say "hmmm, why hadn't we thought of making a Calvin & Hobbes movies yet?" You have gone and put the idea into their head now.

I thought about that, but come on, this is Hollywood! You KNOW they already thought about it!

I am just surprised they didn't try to do it in the early 90s with Macaulay Culkin...

I wonder if they'll have any jokes that center around the fact that a Great Dane is a large dog?

Do we need this? Marmaduke is a single strip funny. Why not just make a regular old "annoying pet" movie without the name? Marmaduke doesn't talk: is he gonna talk? He better no fucking talk!
This can only end in tears...

Part of the joy of certain strips (Marmaduke and Calvin and Hobbes included) is the charm and skill of the drawings. CGI does NOT translate that.

As much as I was devastated when Bill Waterson stopped making Calvin & Hobbes comics, he also protects it so that an unauthorized movie will not be made in his lifetime (and probably after). As for Marmaduke, it's not a funny comic, so it's going to remain not-funny in movie form.

Assuming all ideas here a read by Big Shot Hollywood Producers.
Please refrain from making any of the following a movie:
Ziggy
Wizard of ID
Andy Capp
Hagar the Horrible
Heathcliff
Cathy (oh wait.. two Bridget Jones and Sex in the City.. nevermind)
Family Circus
Mary Worth is fine though... Her stern but sensible face will remind them never to do anything so stupid again.
