Watch This! Premiere Episode of 'Rotten Tomatoes' TV!
Filed under: New Releases, Box Office, Trailers and Clips
Welcome to a Saturday, which is when much of the blog-world slows down a bit and takes it easy. (Plus we don't get a whole lot of fresh movie news on most Saturdays.) So that's a perfect excuse to settle in for a 25-minute excerpt from the inaugural episode of The Rotten Tomatoes Show. Broadcast on Current TV (Thursday, 10:30), the show is hosted by Brett Erlich and Ellen Fox. No, neither of them are film critics, but they're both pretty quick, smart, and amusing. Plus neither of 'em claims to be a film critic. Not so much a traditional review show as it is a weekly hodge-podge (this blog astutely compares it to shows like Best Week Ever), The RT Show looks to be a lot of snarky fun for the movie geeks. As the hosts wander through three films (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Echelon Conspiracy, and Crossing Over), they solicit various opinions from comics, bloggers, and normal-joe internet readers. Plus there's a very funny diversion into the topic of video game movies, a surprisingly deep* look at "conspiracy thrillers," and a lot of random little tidbits that movie nuts will dig. (Xanadu!!?!?!)
And since I'm watching this episode as I (sloooooowly) write this piece, I can offer the following opinions: A) Wow, that was a dead-on tag-team evisceration of Crossing Over, B) Ellen Fox is really cute, C) the hosts actually offer some cinematic insights that are ... insightful. More than I can say for some other televised "film critics." Enjoy!
* Seriously! They show clips, pay respect, and even poke a little fun at Three Days of the Condor, The Parallax View, The Manchurian Candidate, They Live, and The Conversation! Those movies are, like, OLD! (And the hot lady host seems to sincerely LOVE The Conversation, which only serves to push my new crush into the "restraining order" zone.) It's almost like the producers KNEW I was going to dismiss this program as forgettable fluff, so they threw this conspiracy thriller compilation in there just to mess with me! No fair.

I watched this on TV when it premiered. I wasn't very impressed. All I was thinking while watching was, are they just going to ridicule every movie that is ever featured on the show?
Thankfully, one of the last things they say is that the past week was a great week for movies, and a great week to start a movie review show (Extreme sarcasm).
Well, I guess technically anything in the world is better than "Ben Lies on top of Ben Mankiewitz".
If it isn't better next week, AND THE MALE HOST DOES NOT STOP DOING A JIM HALPERT IMPRESSION, I will cease to watch this show. I don't care for their website, and they'll have to win me over to get me to care for the show.

I forgot to mention that I also really hate the green screen backgrounds... what is the budget on this show, $3?
Shame it's on current TV, no one will be able to find it.
