'Fantastic Four' To Get the Reboot?
Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, 20th Century Fox, Newsstand, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Hollywood's favorite new word is "reboot." I'm not sure why it's preferable to "remake" except that it has a technological ring to it, and implies that our movie memories will be erased as easily as our computer hard drives.Comic book franchises is where the "rebooting" really seems to be happening (which is no surprise, considering the "retcon" was invented by comic books), with the Hulk undergoing the first treatment, Superman confirmed to be next, and Daredevil in rumor stage.
According to IESB.net, Fox is now looking to give the Fantastic Four the reboot. They want a whole new cast , and a whole new approach, specifically one that's a little more edgy. They want less bubble gum and more Iron Man. Of course, it's all rumor at this point, but the rumors proved true when it came to Superman and Daredevil, so I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if we get an official announcement.
I guess the biggest question is ... should they? I'm still in favor of redoing Daredevil, but now the rush to remake history is feeling rather ridiculous. Rise of the Silver Surfer just came out in 2007, might it not be better to let the foursome rest awhile, and see what fans start clamoring for? (I seem to remember they want the Silver Surfer, not more of the Four.)
Then again, if a version isn't popular or definitive (does anyone really think Reed Richards and immediately picture Ioan Gruffudd?) does it really matter if you change the line-up so soon? But why this "reboot" drama? Why not just ease back into the series with a new cast and a new story arc, and simply pretend it's the same comic book with a new artist?

Punisher was rebooted with just a few years inbetween films. It's much easier to sell toys and jackets and mugs when there is a current movie to hitch the hype to, so this makes perfect business sense if maybe not perfect narrative sense.
I actually like the idea of rebooting these franchises every couple years or so--the comics do exactly the same thing. I would love to see the smarter Ultimate FF adapted for the screen and that needs new, younger characters. Let's see some serious Sci-Fi, and a separate Surfer movie.

Not every comic book story needs edginess. Not every comic book movie needs to be The Dark Knight.

Why so soon? Because comics are hot again and Hollywood wants to make sure they get this made before they enter the uncool cycle created by terrible reboots.
Somehwere a snake is eating its tail.
Anyway, if any comic book movie needs a reboot, it's FF. Lesson 1 - get a new casting director. Outside of Chiklis as Ben, did they get anything right? Alba as Sue is worse than Affleck as Daredevil as far as casting choice go.

I think very few people care about origin stories after the first time, least of all fans. We've managed to make the leap between 6 Bonds, I think we can handle an entire replacement FF, especially when there was no love for the first 4 to begin with.
Just give us a new story and the benefit of the doubt that we know how they got there and move on!

I like to see good comic book movies like everyone else, but doesn't anyone feel like we should get more than 2 years off before a reboot? Granted the two FF flicks are a giant pile of steaming poo to be sure. And the characters are worthy of something much better (I agree though, Chiklis as ben was right). But superhero confusion and fatigue are going to set in if they keep rebooting, recasting, and restructuring these stories too close together.
Favreau and Nolan are taking years between these huge films so they can - everybody now - make them good. And guess what happens - they make 5 times as much as lame superhero flicks that spared no expense on everything except a story and taking the time to do it right. Just saying - If they are rebooting FF, I hope they realize their mistake(s) on the past films.

While I agree both FF movies were badly cast (except Chiklis, who was burdened with a mediocre costume) and horribly written I don't feel the need for a reboot or a remake or a sequel. Not yet at least. Let it go for now and wait for some people who care about the comics instead of following the newest trend. I don't want a FF movie like Iron Man or Dark Knight because those were popular.

Why these companies haven't tried to do a CG version of one of these frachises is beyond me. CG is perfect for FF, just look at the Incredibles. Get a good story first, then hit it out the park. Get the voices right and the rest will be golden. $$$ Then we can see what the Thing is really supposed to look like, instead of a hot pile of mud. And I don't know why Jessica Alba keeps getting work anyway. She stinks. Easy on the eyes though.

I'm not a big FF fan comic wise but wasn't disappointed with the movies...The Commish as the Thing was the best part and I agree that every other actor made their character horrible. I never saw Dr. Christian Troy as Doom...no way, no how. Alba was horrible. And Torch was just too campy. I'd be okay if they re-did it. Make Doom more angry. More powerful. And no eye candy for the Four.

Since the F4 movies were both so silly and unmemorable, couldn't the studio just decide to make another one with a new cast, not tell anyone, and call that the reboot? Why even waste a press release telling anyone about it? It's not like more than about a dozen people would even notice.

I agree with Mark H. Just get on with a new story, nwe cast, new director, and don't make it an origin. I doubt the fandom would be crying about it!

I think the cast we've had for the last two has been fine. Yes, even Jessica Alba. Could they have done better? Sure. But Chiklis is excellent, Evans is a good hothead (very in keeping with early Johnny Storm) and I really like Gruffud as Reed. IF Doc Doom is back, he needs a recast. Make pretty-boy a Doombot. But I'd rather just stay away from Doom and bring in another classic villain instead. The film meeds a stronger story and better screenplay that shies away from family comedy. It all comes down to the story. Put the same cast in a better story, and it'll work.

I agree Fantastic four needs to be rebooted. I thought so after the first movie. No one was like the character in the comics. The only person I wish could stay around was the guy playing Dr. Doom. I think He could pull off the Dr really well. He just never got to be shown the way I would have liked him.
Johnny is not a fool in the comics like He was in the Film.
Mister Fantastic was not as dumb either. The Invisible lady was not any thing like she was shown. She can take really good care of her self.
As for the Thing He could have been better handled too.
But I really wish they could keep the Dr around because I think He did a good job with what He had to work with.
Truth be told all the cast was good other then Jessica Alba. I have seen what the other cast members have done in other films and on TV they can act but the film was a mess and script so the actors never got to shine like they have in other stuff.
I will say the actors are all great ones but I would only keep two around the guy who played the Thing and Dr. Doom.
Why even though the other two guys are great they just do not feel like the Human Torch and Mr. F
But to me if it was a new F4 movie or Silver Surfer I would take SS any day. Because his story is really great and would work really well on film.
At the end of the day if FF is to become a new series some one who makes the movie needs to look at the comics and really get the tone of the comic and bring it to life.

No point in rebooting. As others here have opined, Marvel should just recast, get a new director with a better creative vision, and a good script that puts the FF into another adventure.
I have friends who thoroughly enjoyed The Dark Knight but who had never seen Batman Begins -- in fact, a few of them had no idea there had been a prior Batman flick that starred Christian Bale. These people didn't need to see an origin story to enjoy TDK. (And, remember, the Joker had no origin story in TDK.)
And another thing: The original X-Men flick had pretty much no origin stories!
Hollywood studios and screenwriters really need to start giving the audience more of the benefit of the doubt here. Origin stories for superheros don't always need to be depicted (or re-depicted).

The Punisher has actually been rebooted/remade twice. All three of the movies were crap. The Incredible Hulk is not an interesting enough character to even warrant a film and I don't blame Edward Norton for disowning it. The Fantastic Four don't really lend themselves to a grittier take. It might have helped to tone down the camp at least a little but it suffers from having an undertalented ensemble cast. The most intense performers are Michael Chiklis and Julian McMahon but Chiklis spends all his time in CGI hell. They shouldn't even bother with a reboot. The Daredevil reboot is a great idea, though I don't place the blame on Ben Affleck. The script was dogpoop. Frank Miller should seriously be considered to adapt one/many of his stories to the screen. He might even have to direct. I know The Spirit wasn't great but know one knows DD like Miller.

Yes Marvel ought to reboot the F.F. If you look at what the complaints were, they were on the casting roles except for Chiklis who is spot-on as the Thing.Reed was cast as a wussy, geek and not a mature, intelligent scientist, The Invisible Woman was girl-ish, The Torch was cast as a wise-cracker when was suppose to be a HOT-HEAD ( temper) which is why was named the Torch. Also I want to add another fault.Alot of F.F. was the Jack KIrby machinary! That was and still is cool looking stuff and ought to be exactly that way.

The fact of the matter is that Hollywood can't let anything stay as is. You've got Bill and Ted being remade after only 20 years, Star Trek's going Triple X/Mountain Dew-style, and there's even talk of MacGyver being turned into a film franchise.
I think Stargate's 200th episode really showed humorously that Hollywood can't re-invent the horse.
