'Thor' Rumors Invade The Net

So if you were still hoping to get the chance to audition to play the mighty Thor in Kenneth Branagh's adaptation, you might have to act fast. Latino Review has just received a tip that the Shakespearean director was recently spotted having a 'working lunch' with True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård (son of *But the Thor chatter doesn't end there. Over at IESB, talk has surfaced that Branagh has shortlisted Josh Hartnett to play Thor's brother, and bad guy, Loki. According to IESB, "Josh and his camp are really interested because he has never played a villain before and after Heath Ledger's Oscar win for the latest comic book villain, Hartnett is intrigued by the character." But before you get too excited about Hartnett and Skarsgård, keep in mind these are some pretty tenuous rumors -- even for a comic book movie. IESB also says Channing Tatum was or is being considered to play Thor, as well.
So outside of True Blood fans, Skarsgård may not be a household name, but the addition of a relatively unknown actor for the lead would be right in line with some of the other unlikely participants in this comic book adaptation. I mean would anyone have suspected that Branagh would be handed the keys to a Marvel franchise? I know Marvel has faith in him, but do you?
*Correction: Alexander's dad is acclaimed Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård

It's Stellan, not Skellan.

If you've seen Generation Kill then you should know Skarsgård too.
I haven't really seen True Blood, the gap in Anna Paquin's teeth turns me off, but I loved Generation Kill and he played his character well.

I'd like to think that people in the industry cruise through blogs like this one looking for people's reaction to rumors in efforts to help them consider their career choices, to a degree. If that's the case, then Alexander is the perfect Thor. Stop looking around for anyone else, just sign the bloody contract and make the film already.
I am also pleased to see Branagh in the director's chair. If done right, this could be a hybrid action/Shakespearian masterpiece by the likes of which we haven't seen before.
Nice Anchorman reference. :)

I think choosing Skarsgård for Thor is the right move. Of all the people I thought who could play Thor, I didn't think of him.
Also I think Hartnett would do a good job if chosen for the role of his brother. Unlike alot of people and think Hartnett is a good actor. I think he chose some bad films but I think Hartnett also was good in movies like Lucky Number Slevin, Wicker Park, Sin City, and 30 Days of Night.

"...and after Heath Ledger's Oscar win for the latest comic book villain..."
Wow... if that actually came from someone attached to Hartnett, I'm amazed. How callous. Not because of Heath's death, but because it basically says, "Josh didn't give a crap about stuff like this until someone else from his acting generation won all kinds of critical acclaim and an Oscar for playing a bad guy in superhero movie, and now Josh thinks maybe he can win won too."
Loki is a far cry from The Joker.

Alex Skarsgard is actually well known for Generation Kill, after all he played a lead role and played it so well most people thought he was American. He is more than a pretty face and hot body. He has real depth as an actor and he is genuinely a good generous person who appreciates his fan base.

I have been telling about having 6 foot and 11 inch tall Nathan Jones ( "Fearless" ) to play in Thor's role.

I seriously doubt Josh Hartnett or any of Josh Hartnett's people would compare his work to Heath Ledger's. Hartnett is quite literally MADE of wood onscreen, and Loki has to be dripping with venom and wit and a dark charm. If Branaugh wants to go in this direction, he can save millions and cast a 2 x 4.
