Love Letters to Supporting Players
First, I must give some major props to Guardian writer Anne Billson. Not only has she inspired me to take her topic and run with it here, but she bravely declared her love for Mark Strong in one of the classiest of British papers. You rarely see that kind of passion outside of a fan site, let alone in print journalism! Well done, Ms. Billson. With that intro out of the way, let's tackle Ms. Billson's topic -- scene-stealing supporting actors. They're the men and women you love and admire so much, you're practically craning your neck over the shoulder of the lead to see a bit more of them. For Billson (and probably a lot of people these days), it's Strong.
I have a very similar affair with Jason Isaacs, an extremely good actor who is generally stuck in supporting or villain roles. I love this guy. I'll watch anything he's in, and I'll always root for him. While I love the Harry Potter films for their own sake, I'm always annoyed by how much Lucius Malfoy ends up on the cutting room floor. I guiltily root for him in The Patriot, hoping every time that he defeats those uppity colonials. (The fact that he's backed by one of my other favorite supporting actors, Adam Baldwin, only makes my Loyalist sympathies stronger.)
But Billson cautions against wanting to see too much of your favorite supporting player, arguing that they lose their edge when handed a lead part. (For the record, she thinks Kevin Spacey, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Jude Law are the worst offenders.) I would disagree there -- Isaacs has done a few leading parts (if you haven't seen The State Within, you should) and wouldn't lose an ounce of charisma or talent if he was as famous as Clive Owen. In fact, I still don't know why he isn't, especially after owning every season of Brotherhood.
As always, I'll hand it over to you -- I'd love to hear who your favorite supporting actors are (and let's get some actresses into the discussion) and whether you love them precisely because they're in small doses, or if you think Hollywood is just blind to their A-List potential.
Follow me on Twitter, if you can forgive me for being a Loyalist

Glad to see someone else out there shares my love for Mark Strong. I'm excited to see he has some more projects lined up. I adore the guy. He is fantastic. However, at least in his case I agree with Bilson. I think he really shines in supporting roles. I would love to see him in more films...but as a supporter. He plays the more interesting side characters so well.

Morgan Freeman
Steve Buscemi
Joe Pantoliano
Joe Pesci
William H. Macy
For the most part, I prefer them in supporting roles rather than as the main attraction.

Well Ms Billson, credit given where credit is due for 'supporting actors' and I use the term loosley. Why on Earth Mr, Isaacs did not get a more substantial slice of the media cake for his significant role in 'The Patriot' is beyond me?
Far too often such crucial excerpts that would help progression of such a tale end up as you say on 'the cutting room floor'
I have seen Mr. Isaacs in many a supporting role, only to find out later that several relavant scenes have been 'edited 'out. so reducing screen time on both the small and large screen.

I love Adam Baldwin and would watch him in anything. He's the perfect mix of funny, charming, intimidating, tough, smart and hot. He steals every scene in every show I've seen him in and I love the roles he's chosen to play. He could have his own channel AB all the time, 24/7 and life would be better. I hope "Chuck" gets another season and if not, I can't wait to see where Mr. Baldwin pops up next.

I think I can place Gary Oldman in this envelope of actors, he always plays brilliantly and draws my attention to his characters with the amazing facets of his acting ability. I'll admit Dead Fish wasn't very good, but I can't think of a film I didn't at least enjoy him in, in the rare case that I'm not wildly in love with the role.

Totally agree with your choice of Jason Isaacs.
Catherine Keener (his wife in Friends with Money) once stated 'Jason is gorgeous, smart and very talented. Why isn't he more famous?'
One thing is he blends into different characters so well. People don't realize it's the same actor. Even when he portrayed both Mr. Darling and Captain Hook in 'Peter Pan', so many people
finished watching and still didn't realized that they were watching the same actor.
I want to see him in more leading roles. He was magnificent in 'The State Within' and 'Brotherhood'. He was perfect as Antonio Perez in 'The El Escorial Conspiracy'.

Lurve Jason Isaacs -- his Lucius Malfoy was better than the book's version, and the main reason I continue to watch the Harry Potter films. And I'm looking forward to finding "Good" regardless of the poor reviews. I started watching out for Mark Strong after I saw him in a British TV miniseries called "The Jury"; if you haven't seen this, Netflix has it. Another face I'm always glad to see is Tim Curry -- he completely chewed the scenery in a multiepisode arc in the old TV series "Wiseguy." (BTW, there were a ton of "was that ...?" roles in "Wiseguy" including Kevin Spacey.)

I surmise that Mr. Isaacs does something similar to Morgan Freeman. He wisely choses the roles that display gravitas. This usually means that he himself is also a drawing force and brings that to the character. Therefore his roles, no matter how small, draw you in.
All of Mr. Isaacs' fans would enjoy seeing him step forward into the spotlight, which I'm certain he will do when a role is presented to him that's worthy of his keen character sense. Until then, I will happily pay absurd amounts of money to watch films where he may only be featured for a moment or two, just to smile at the magnetic persona that he is. He would never lose that charismatic power to stardom, nor do I believe would he become a novelty on a dime-store shelf, or someone forgotten in history.
Thank you, Mr. Isaacs, for your power and prowess on screens large and small.

Its thrilling to see so many other people who like Jason Isaacs and Adam Baldwin! Add Nathan Fillian and Ray Stevenson and you've got all my favorite guys on one list.
Jason Isaacs is a very talented guy, and I have no doubt we'll be seeing lots more of him in the future. He really becomes the characters he plays--most actors are still some version of themselves in roles, but not Isaacs. He is so soft spoken and tender hearted in real life. Amazing transformations.

Currently my two favorite actors are Ray Stevenson and Jason Isaacs. I hope to see them in many more projects...and in projects worthy of their wonderful talent.
Both of them are great-looking, sexy men with powerful presence who can carry a leading role as well as provide skillful support in a smaller role.
I also am drawn in by Gary Oldman's and Tim Curry's work and magnetism.

For me it has to be Jason Isaacs. This man should be in the leading roles.
He is fabulous - and a fantastic British actor too!
He was brilliantly cast as Tavington in the Patriot but I particularly love his portrayal of Lucius Malfoy.
