Scenes We Love: Finding Nemo
Filed under: Animation, Classics, Disney, Family Films, Trailers and Clips, Scenes We Love

I'm always rather shocked to hear people blast Finding Nemo. I see a lot of similarities between it and Andrew Stanton's Wall-E, as they're both unapologetic love stories, but with a bit of melancholy at the core. Nemo is about one of the thorniest relationships of all: the one that exists between a parent and child. Nemo touches (very lightly) on just how easy it is for a parent to hurt a child ("You want to do these things and you just can't!"), how the best intentions go awry, and how far a parent will go to rescue their child from danger. Of course, it's also about letting go ... and there's something so sad about watching Nemo go off to school at the end, and knowing just what that means. Sniffle.
But I'm waxing all poetic when all I really wanted to do was post a clip with turtles in it. This scene is like my happy place (they don't all involve Bud White) for a very simple reason ... I really like turtles and surfing. I sat up in the theater with a squeal to rival the wee ones sitting next to me when this scene started. Hey, I never said I was cool.

You would like this, you cheap 1930's hussy...
In all seriousness, this is one of the best scenes in the film. As a new dad I'm often referring to this part of Nemo to remind myself how I have to eventually let my daughter learn by trial-and-error. It's not going to be easy, but how else is she going to become her own person?

I agree completely. My daughter (now almost 4) has watched Nemo so many time I lost count (well into the triple digits) and I've seen it with her at least 2/3 of those times. I went through the hassle of moving the movie from DVD to the TiVo so it would always be ready.
I think Nemo is one of the few movies that I wouldn't hate after all those viewings, and whenever this scene comes on, I still have to repeat Crush's first line.

I LOVE this movie, and if I am miserable, its my go to happy movie, well. Even when I'm down I often catch myself repeating, "Just keep swimming. Swimming, swimming." I've got some other films that are guaranteed to make me laugh hysterically, or make me warm during a blizzard, but this one is heart warming. Happy and warm and soothing with a bit of heartache thrown in for us parents. Beautiful to look at, it my choice to watch when I'm at the dentist because I don't have to hear it, just seeing it calms me down. This is one of the best scenes too.

I'm a childless (so far, but still hoping!) adult, and proud to admit I had to have this adorable movie! The voice actors/acting is top-notch, I thought the cast and casting as a whole was *awesome*; they all complimented each other, yet worked so wonderfully as a ensemble.
The story is so rich with situations so many of us can relate to. Many times my friends and loved-ones have found ourselves facing some of life's truly tough experiences, it's so hard *not* to smile when we remind each other "Just keep swiming, just keep swimming ..."
My favorite laugh is the very end of the movie -- the scene after the credits. So funny!
