MacGyver Heads for the Big Screen!

Set 'em up and knock 'em down! Hollywood's return to the halls of the '80s media continues, and this time, it wants to bring back the most resourceful secret agent we've ever known.
The Hollywood Reporter posts that New Line is reviving MacGyver and throwing him into the big-budget action of a feature film. There's no writer or director attached yet, but this is looking to be a De Laurentiis love child -- Raffaella is producing with Martha (and series creator Lee Zlotoff), while Dino steps in as executive producer.
New Line's Richard Brener says: "We think we're a stick of chewing gum, a paper clip and an A-list writer away from a global franchise," and I'm inclined to agree. The premise has everything needed to make a loud and exciting action fest, with brains to keep it from being too stupid (while still being ridiculous!). And think about it -- these days, the world has so many more toys that MacGyver can amp up with his Swiss Army knife. The possibilities are endless!
But cinema magic will only happen if they find the right man. Is it the electrical genius of the man known as Silent Bob? He has been labelled better than MacGyver. A heart-throbish Brad Pitt? Who else can make a coffin into a jet ski? Share your MacGyver casting ideas below!

Thirded! I venture to say I won't go near this movie if they cast someone else.
Also, the article linked doesn't say they're looking for a leading man. It just says they're looking for a writer/director. And if Stallone can play Rocky at his age, then MacGyver can play MacGyver.

The name I'm hearing bandied about is Nathan Fillion -- which actually sounds like a good idea.

RDA is too old. Maybe he can play Pete Thornton, the boss. The perfect actor for the role is Nathan Fillion. See him as Mal in the series Firefly. He would be great as MacGyver.

I agree there is only one actor to play MacGuyver. So there is only one other choice: a big screen MacGruber.
Or not.

MacGruber makeup and bad wigs aside, RDA has gotten a lot bigger of late... not exactly the MacGyver Pattie and Selma love. Make him the new Pete.
Filion's not a bad choice. Right bit of sarcasm and snark.

After thinking about it Nathan Fillion would actually make an a good MacGyver. I still think that RDA needs to be in it somewhere though.

I agree with a lot of the others, that RDA is too old at this point. It would seem silly to make a movie with him. I mean, seriously, would MacGuyver fans really want to see him finally making a big-screen debut as MacGuyver only to have it be as painfully bad as the last Indiana Jones?
Honestly, think it through before you answer the question.
I could see Timothy Olyphant playing a decent Mac. He's got the right kind of sarcastic edge, but a certain toughness that you can buy without having it sold to you. I also don't think Nathan Fillion would do a bad job, but I don't know if Hollywood would hang a movie of this calliber on his shoulders, sadly.

Richard Dean Anderson. end of discusiion. And whoever said he was too old, stop labeling action stars who are in their fifties or sixties old. I mean look at Clint Eastwood, he did In the Line of Fire in his sixties and i'm not sure if Gran Torino counts but that too

I am the next MacGyver. Either cast me, or don't make the movie.
Now they'll never make it. :)

I have never seen an episode of MacGyver in it's entirety, but that coffin Jet Ski seemed more James Bond than MacGyver. Isn't he supposed to make stuff out of what he has in his pockets; like an avocado, an icepick and his snorkel?
I could see either Josh Brolin or James LeGros playing Mac on the big screen. I think the actor needs to be more rugged than Ryan Reynolds.

I don't think RDA is too old, MacGyver character isn't a physical one he's more like brains and good ideas so the analogy you use with Indiana and Rocky/Rambo doesn´t apply. Come on, just look at SG-1, he's not much older then the last episodes and it came quite well...

I believe Richard Dean Anderson should revive his role as MacGyver. Actually I think most of the original cast should come back. However we know that the Dana Elcar has past on, But none-the-less I think it should be like a big screen reunion for most of the original cast. It would be cool.
I can see points as to Anderson's age. However, if people think about it a little bit, the final episode of the season MacGyver and his newly discovered son "SAM" ride off to get to know each a little bit more since the considerable absence on MacGyver's behalf. I believe they should pick up from where they left off and start with MacGyver and his son catching up, until they get suddenly interrupted from someone back at the Phoenix Foundation. Ultimately MacGyver and son are not only back together from a long absence from each other's lives, but they spend quality time together as father and son with saving the world as their ultimate hobby.
