'Dark Knight' Director's Brother Wanted for Murder?
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand
It's the sort of story that puts Christian Bale's un-Batman-like rant into perspective -- Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan's brother may be a murderer. Matthew Francis Nolan, 40, is wanted in Costa Rica for the kidnapping and murder of a Florida businessman. Nolan allegedly presented himself to the now-deceased Robert C. Cohen as an investor, claiming he wanted to do business in South America. But his real mission, authorities say, was to get $7 million that Cohen owed another man in Florida.
Nolan's accomplice, Douglas Mejia, has already been convicted of kidnapping Cohen when he and Nolan attempted to extort the money from Cohen's family. When that failed, cops say that the pair killed him.
Nolan was already under investigation by the FBI regarding an unrelated $700,000 bank-fraud scheme. He's now being held in the U.S., awaiting extradition.
Christopher Nolan collaborated with another brother, Jonathan, on the scripts for Memento, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight, and Jonathan is credited with the upcoming Terminator: Salvation -- it looks like they don't have to search too far to find inspiration for the darker themes in their screenplays. A lot of families have black sheep, but who knew that Nolan's own brother might be the Joker?

What do you mean in good taste? The freaking guy kidnapped some dude, tried to get hundreds of thousands of dollars out of him and then killed him -- and you're coming after us for acting out in poor taste. Sorry, I forgot how we weren't allowed to make fun of murderers and psychos anymore because, gosh darnit, they're people too!

It's hack, tabloid journalism 101.

No, Erik, the inference that it has anything to do with the other brothers' work is baseless and cheap tabloid-y bullshit. If you can't see how a statement like that is in poor taste I don't think you can be helped in the ethics department.

We're an opinionated (sometimes snarky) movie blog and not the New York Times. She wasn't serious; she made a joke. Why so serious?

@ Brant & Slappy, I'm with you guys on this..
Erik, I don't think it's bad taste because of joking about criminals. I think it's bad taste because that last part is disrespectful towards the director and the brother's family. Not just the brother. I think their family is already having a lot of trouble and stress with the deal with the murder. Poking fun at the brother, like.... saying *Christopher Nolan* won't have to look far for inspiration? Yeah, Christopher, think about your own brother, your family's shameful black sheep, and use that for your movie. that's just mean.

Err, I'd say that's in pretty poor taste and a pretty low class statement to make. Way to be completely judgmental in quite an ignorant fashion.

The Nolan family is an integral part of the Illuminati. This is a very powerful enterprise. The bank fraud, the murder of a businessman. You sheeple always act so shocked, failing to connect the very obvious dots. Next Batman will be an apologia for Obama and the new world order, just like The Dark Knight absolved Bush of his vigilante martyrdom. Please. To Nolan and all of his apologists: Eat steak.

Here is another for you NOW THIS IS IN BAD TASTE!!!!!
"What did the other guy do?"
but thats after considering the "MADEOFF" situation and if the victims of that Ponsi scam had the opportunity to get there funds back what would THEY do.
By the way, Cinematical is great cause they are honest even when you disagree with there comments. Although way to much coverage on WATCHMEN....and I LOVED that flick LOL!!!

The family of the man that was murdered just found out this news 2 minutes ago. They immediately went online to find the story...
An error to be corrected:
The family was NOT contacted or extorted for any money. The perps and powers involved tried to get the money from the victim's partner (he allegedly killed himself) before kidnapping and torturing him. This point makes a difference in the way the case is handled!
One must wonder if being a Director and having "Contacts" if the brother (Matthew) wasn't able to get into this line of work through Christopher?

What do you mean by that? I apologize in advance if I'm being obtuse today, but I don't quite understand what you mean by that part of the sentence.

Apparently, Jonathan is one of the screenwriters. The sentence structure is wrong, though, as it implies Christopher and Jonathan both worked on Terminator Salvation.

I meant that it might be in bad taste toward the Cohen family to make light of the situation, especially before all the facts are in. But if you feel like the snarky jokes are earning you more readers than they turn away, then have at it.
