Help Save the Earth By Seeing Disney's 'Earth'
Filed under: Documentary, Disney, Distribution, Family Films, Newsstand, Movie Marketing
Two new surveys released this week indicated that Americans couldn't care less about global warming at the moment, and while things are rough for everyone right now, we can't just blow the environment off like that. It's starting to get scary out there -- I live in Colorado's high country, in a climate that's generally akin to Moscow, and have been wearing t-shirts since mid-February. It's record breaking ... and not normal. But Cinematical isn't really a place for me to preach on that kind of topic -- but I can tell you about a cool promo that Disney is running for their Earth documentary. If you buy a ticket for opening weekend (April 22), they'll plant a tree in your name. They're on sale now via Disney's official Earth site, where you can achieve a moment of Zen by watching the trailer.
Lest you think this is just cutesy Disney stuff, know that Earth was directed by Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield, the duo behind the amazing Planet Earth documentary series. If you've never seen the footage they can capture, you're in for a treat and a learning experience.
So buy some tickets to Earth -- not only will it be money and time well spent at the theater, but you'll also help clean up our precious planet. Wall-E would thank you.

I do.
The comments recently from Washington have been why has the president been "multitasking"? It's like saying "Why are you still trying to fix the hole in the hull when we've got this broken engine?!" Uh, guys, if the ship goes down (environment) it doesn't matter if the economy (engine) is running or not.
But, oh, right, this is a movie site, sorry for the intrusion.

People don't care about global warming because it is not a man made event. It is a natural cycle and there is plenty of legitimate research to prove that.
Meanwhile, real environmental causes are being ignored because people have tuned out of these issues with so much BS floating around.
Get used to it being warmer. There is nothing we can do about it.

Owl: sorry, but the overwhelming scientific consensus (industry hacks and "religious" shills don't count) is that global warming IS man-made and if something isn't done, we'll all be screwed.
Thankfully, we now have a president that can multitask, as ML noted, and has thankfully been ignoring the ignorant populace's lack of concern.
Anyway, I'll see this, but I am more interested in the other documentaries DisneyNature has in the works. I don't remember all of them, but I do recall a particularly enticing one about oceans.

Amen....Man-made global warming simply does not exist....the earth should be cared for....but not frantically obsessed over because of something that we can do nothing about....

Judging by the trailer, this documentary is a distillation of the Planet Earth series, probably with some different narration and some semblance of a plot attached.

Well, I won't be there. I already have Planet Earth on my shelf. This is just a way for Disney to keep taking money from the consumer's pockets.

By the sound of James Earl Jones' voice, this is the third time that the narration has been altered.
David Attenborough did the BBC release.
Sigourney Weaver did the Discovery release.
James Earl Jones is doing the Disney release.

elessar, your claim is bold, and I would be highly skeptical of your sources. (I prefer the consensus of well respected, peer reviewed scientific journals -- many of which agree humans have had little part in the change.)
The Earth is on a warming trend over the past century or so. We know that there's more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than ever before. Almost all climatologists draw a causal relationship between temperature and CO2, saying that CO2 creates the greenhouse effect, thus causing the higher temperatures.
Most people say the current trend is truly remarkable, but only if you choose a recent segment of climate history. Some people say that if you look back far enough you'll find many such ups and downs that have been far more dramatic than this one and have lasted many times longer, before there were those evil pesky humans around to cause it.
The big question, which is significant because it's one that we probably can do something about, asks how much is human activity to blame for the current trend. Everyone agrees that it's at least partly to blame, but the estimates of how much range from 100% to .00001%.
Regardless, it's non-zero, and it really should be zero, and everyone agrees that making it zero should be a goal -- so trees are good (LOL) but this is more marketing than earth friendly, as is much of the 'green' movement.

There is no way that there will ever be a "zero" carbon emittancy. We exhale carbon dioxide. Your heat air conditioning eshews it. Fire, which is how the human race was able to battle the elements, and will always be a part of will never stop. Animals crap all over the place, and that has methane gas in it! Animals breath and exhale, too.
Recycling requires heat, which emits carbon dioxide.
People have been driving vehicles, using heat and A/C, refridgerators, and etc and there has been NO CHANGE. This "Global Warming" is a natural cycle.
Global warming is the biggest hoax ever created, and it's sad that people will concede to the people trying to market it.

What warming trend? Since 1998, the global temperature has been decreasing. Are you guys still relying on data Dr. Hansen, a good friend and ally of Al Gore's, fudged?

Here is the explanation of Dr. Hansen's "mistake" ...I think he fudged the numbers myself and got caught:

Here is NASA thanking the Canadian who have brought it to the their attention:

Of course, the main stream media keep on reciting Dr. Hansen's faulty data like nothing happened.

First of all climate change does not just mean global warming, it means a change in the way the climate operates around the globe. This means some places will get hotter, some colder, some deserts will get drier and some places will flood unusually often. We have only been driving cars and burning up energy in refrigerators, electric appliances, etc for the last maybe 100-150 years...this is a blink of the eye in geologic time. There is a certain amount of natural variation in the cycle of climates, but the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is far out of the realm of commonplace for the last 11,000 (or the period of time in which the climate has largely been stable as we know it). There is disagreement among researchers about the particulars of different models used to make predictions - but you would have a really hard time finding a legitimate, peer reviewed article by a respected climate scientist that argued that we humans have nothing to do with what is happening.
By the way, i saw this movie in a sneak preview. It is 100% marketing and has absolutely nothing to do with climate change or educating people about what is happening. It is a lousy re-cut of the very well made BBC series and nothing more. I was ashamed to be sitting there listening to James Earl Jones skip cleanly over the mess of climate change and essentially state at the end of the film that there is a circle of life that will go on indefinitely exactly how it is now. As a scientist, I wanted to scream.
