What Does The Observer Have Against Danny McBride?
The answer to that question appears to be everything! In a piece entitled Danny McBride, We Don't Get You!, writer Christopher Rosen takes the comedian to task for everything from his "ugly and unredeemable characters" to a more general complaint that the man is just plain unfunny. Rosen goes on to describe McBride as "...Will Ferrell, only without the charm or talent." Ouch, did McBride run over this guy's dog with a piece of Kenny F**king Powers Awesomeness, or what? But Rosen has plenty of venom to go around, and he also tears a strip off McBride's latest comedy partner, David Gordon Green. The two worked together on the HBO series East Bound and Down and announced last year that they would be working together again on the medieval comedy, Your Highness. But according to Rosen, Green's choice to work with McBride is the equivalent of getting career advice from Tommy Chong.
McBride first appeared in the low-budget comedy The Foot Fist Way, but all I needed was a little Hot Rod and I was hooked (between McBride and Bill Hader, I wasn't quite sure who'd become my new comedy boyfriend). Since then McBride has taken small throwaway background parts and turned them into great works of scene-stealing hilarity. Okay, maybe his particular brand of humor isn't for everyone -- but comedy is by far the most subjective genre out there, since in the end everyone's sense of humor is a little different. But is it really fair to proclaim that someone is without talent, charm, or frankly any redeemable qualities just because their style isn't your thing?
So even though Mr. Rosen won't be lining up for any Danny McBride in the near future, the real question is ... will you?

Actually, Danny McBride first appeared in David Gordon Green's ALL THE REAL GIRLS and he is fantastic and funny and real in it.
That said, I am a bit worried by the direction Green's career seems to be taking. I don't just want him to make silly genre mashes - he's capable of so much more.

Agreed on both counts. I loved All the Real Girls. The cast was great and I had high hopes for the actors, the writers and director. Zooey, McBride, schneider and Green have all gone on to more work and all of them are quite solid.

Good call Brad. All the real girls... seems like forever ago. I have to agree, even then McBride was hilarious, and nothing has changed. He plays hilarious offbeat characters, not every funny character has to be completely likable Mr. Rosen.

You have got to be kidding me!! With all the soulless talentless hacks in Hollywood Mr. Rosen decided to pick on somewhat of an unknown entity like Danny McBride and dedicate a whole article to skewering him? There are far bigger and more justified targets out there but I guess Mr. Rosen is too much of a coward to go after those with sizable influence and budgets.

Danny McBride, on Eastbound and Down, is such a dumb, heroic, torn, fearful, embarassing, not a good fit in all circles, redneck-ish, loud, offbeat, unsure of his path, somewhat downhome type of an anti hero trainwreck waiting to happen that I cannot stop watching. On the one hand walking tall with his own voice providing awesome power in his ear, and in the other unafraid to let the tears flow when he tries to move himself along toward that point when he will have to ask himself how he could have wrecked the engine.
I love you too Katy. My kind of girl.
Yeah I might grimace here and there at the most incredibly embarassing moments he puts himself into, but the shock waves then overpower any embarassment I might feel and I let the laughter boom as loud and as obnoxiously as this show seems to demand.
Will Ferrel is over the top as well, but America already knows and enjoys his characters. Together on a car lot, they will make you laugh loudly.
In a world of tofu eating celebrities enjoying the spotlight while buying a family of international babies and saluting men made of milk, it is a welcome change to see imperfect and real people that know how to make us laugh!

All I have to say is that he is his own comedian. I liked him in fist foot way and Tropic Thunder, not so much a fan of East bound. He has redneck humour, and yes, his characters are somewhat repulsive. I would really like to see what he can do in the future.

To be honest, I don't find McBride to be funny in the least. His "stupid redneck w/ silly hairdos" thing is worn out beyond belief.
That being said, I still think it's unfair to devote an entire article to cutting the guy down. I mean as I said, I don't like him and don't get why he gets so much praise for being a "comic genious" and all that, but i'm also not gonna go out of my way to hate on him just cause his act isn't my thing.
