One of SXSW's prize winning documentaries is finally coming to the masses. This Wednesday (March 25), HBO2 will be premiering Daniel Junge's documentary They Killed Sister Dorothy at 8:00/9:30 p.m ET/PT. It will get a handful of replays, so check HBO's schedule and your local listings if you miss it on the first try.Junge's documentary examines the life and brutal murder of Sister Dorothy Stang, a 73-year-old nun from Ohio who was shot to death in an Amazon jungle. Three men were eventually convicted of killing her, and the Brazilian government stepped up to continue her work in preserving the Amazon rainforest.
Kim Voynar reviewed the documentary at SXSW last year, and was full of praise for its tight style and clear narrative: "They Killed Sister Dorothy isn't just a film about a nun thwarting the attempts of honest ranchers to simply make a living; at its heart, this is really a story about the wealthy versus the poor, and about an activist trying to protect a natural resource from those who would destroy it for profit."
The other five reviewers collected by Rotten Tomatoes all found it equally riveting, which suggests we should all check it out. Sister Dorothy Stang was willing to die for her cause and no matter what your feelings on environmental issues might be, her story is worth knowing and remembering.

This is a very good, highly engaging documentary, not only well told by the filmmakers, but revolving around a highly-charged subject that continually gets swept under the carpet.
I had the chance to see it at last year's SXSW; it's the kind of movie that tends to turn an auditorium full of polite observers into partisan advocates. Watch it alone or gather a room full of friends (and/or strangers) to catch this one.

To give up your life for the sake of love-of-one's-neighbor is the pinnacle of Christian behavior. This is the type of stuff which should be on T.V. - self sacrifice.

Dorothy Stang was my Aunt and the lawyers for the Shooters and the ranchers accuse her of having violence in her DNA because she was American. They (the lawyers) are pure evil and they do not attempt to hide their lies and deceit. The justice system there is a joke, and many thought ours was. We are light years ahead of them in those terms. It's all about the almighty dollar and they don't hide that fact either, just cover it up by saying that she was violent and did bad things. She educated THEIR people so that they would know they were being wronged and those with money did not like it. Everyone should see this so that they know, not just what they did to my Aunt, but what they continue to do to the poor, and what they do to our Earth....our US companies like Cargill and John Deere should be brought to task for buying their soy and supplying them with the farming equipment to clear all the land and farm it instead of using sustainable farming and buying all of their soy in the US.
