CineVegas Rolls the Dice on Nine World Premieres
Filed under: New Releases, CineVegas
We had a swell time at the CineVegas Film Festival last year -- no surprise, considering it's a party-oriented fest set in the heart of glitzy, glamorous, sweaty Las Vegas. Oh, and they show movies, too, and they've just announced nine world premieres for the 11th edition of CineVegas, to be held June 10-15.The opening-night gala will center around Saint John of Las Vegas, starring Steve Buscemi as a recovering gambling addict whose job requires him to return to Sin City. Sarah Silverman, Tim Blake Nelson, John Cho, and Peter Dinklage co-star, which means hilarity cannot fail to ensue.
The entire slate has not been announced yet, but the eight other world premieres have been. Here's a brief rundown:
- Asylum Seekers: Six about-to-lose-it individuals check into a mental institution, then find there's only room for one of them.
- Daylight: A pregnant newlywed is taken hostage. I don't know how this ends, but I suspect the message is DO NOT MESS WITH A PREGNANT WOMAN.
- Easier with Practice: A would-be novelist falls in love with a mysterious phone-sex operator. I think we've all been there.
- Etienne!: A man's only friend, a tiny hamster, is diagnosed with cancer, so the guy takes his pal on a bicycle trip to show him the world before he dies. If this movie makes me cry over the death of a hamster, I will cold stab somebody.
- Godspeed: The CineVegas description merely says it's "an intense, dramatic thriller set in the lingering light of the Alaskan midnight sun."
- Mercy: A cynical writer talks a lot about love but doesn't really believe in it until he meets a woman named Mercy. Scott Caan stars.
- Patriotville: It's a close call with Etienne!, but this description might be my favorite: "An idealistic museum manager and a beautiful troublemaker go to war with a corrupt mayor to stop a casino from being built on their town's historic battlefield." The stars are Justin Long, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Rob Corddry, and Missi Pyle.
- Redland: Set during the Great Depression (the first one, not the upcoming one), this is about an isolated rural family dealing with their daughter's "secret affair." Scandalous!

That slate as it is right now proves why exactly CineVegas is a joke and why it usually sucks every year..Cheers for Vegas!

expectations lead to disappointment.....an open mind may lead to the unexpected...but for one to judge before even seeing at least 1 one film I know for a fact that you haven't seen, leaves me with only one conclusion, you once had a dream to be a filmmaker which for what ever reason it didn't happen. Your insecurity now leads you to judge those that have put their hearts minds and souls into these films. Nobody has asked for you to attend the screenings, so why sway others from attending that which you are ignorant about? Films used to be a way for human beings to connect....now....they are just a means for more criticism in a world which I think we all know needs more embracing than anything else. So why not an open mind?.....
