Michael Bay Talks Transformers 2 and 3 ... and 3D

ShoWest came to a close last night with their annual awards ceremony, where director Michael Bay was honored with the Vanguard Award for Excellence in Filmmaking. We'll skip the obvious jokes and cut right to the chase: During a press conference prior to the ceremony, Bay opened up about the current 3D boom by calling the technology "a gimmick" and later adding that he has no intentions of making Transformers 3 in 3D -- partly because he doesn't believe in 3D, and partly because his run-and-gun style of filmmaking is too constraining for 3D. As far as whether he'll be directing a third Transformers film, Bay smirked and issued the standard "wait and see how the second one does" reply. Remember how Paramount jumped the gun and announced a summer 2011 release date for the third installment? Well, Bay reiterated his earlier claims that the studio made a mistake and was perhaps claiming that date so they had it locked in before deciding exactly what to put there. If a Transformers 3 does happen, look for it to hit theaters in 2012 instead. On Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Bay talked a bit about the IMAX portions of the film, as well as the final budget -- which came in four million under the planned $200 million, leaving some additional funds for extra effects work.
You can watch a video of the press conference with Bay over at Collider. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hits theaters on June 24.

Can you imagine Transformers or any Michael Bay film in 3D? I think it'd start a new disease called Bayitis; that is, seizures and trauma from having your visual reality altered in quick succession At 1 second you're teetering over a cliff, and next your behind a reving car. It'd be like pulling in an out of the Matrix!

I hate to say it, but I respect Michael Bay more now; he's absolutely right. Though I don't generally like his work, I liked Transformers and I'm excited to see the second. I admired him for blasting the studio for assigning a date for Transformers 3 and now he deserves more respect for knowing the 3D boom is just a fad that will die out in a year.

Yes...let's not get in the way of the man's "style".
As for Bay, this is the guy who moaned about HD DVD and then came back a day later and said "never mind". I'm sure a few bucks thrown his way would change his mind about 3D.
