Roger Friedman Brags About Downloading 'Wolverine'
Filed under: New Releases, Celebrities and Controversy, Distribution
When X-Men Origins: Wolverine was posted on the Internet earlier this week, a month before its planned theatrical release, Fox immediately responded by enlisting the FBI to help track down the culprit who pirated it. (And thank goodness the FBI has nothing more pressing to work on right now.) The studio's official statement said this: "We forensically mark our content so we can identify sources that make it available or download it." I can't help them on who made it available, but I do know of one person who downloaded it: Fox News gossip reporter Roger Friedman. He wrote about it in his column on Thursday -- since removed but still in Google's cache -- describing how easy it was to find and download, and how much he love-love-LOVED it. He wrote, "Right now, my 'cousins' at 20th Century Fox are probably having apoplexy.... But everyone can relax. I am, in fact, amazed about how great Wolverine turned out. It exceeds expectations at every turn. I was completely riveted to my desk chair in front of my computer."
Did you get that? He seems to be saying that while his corporate siblings are furious about the leak, they needn't be, because the movie is really, really good -- as if that were the point! As if THAT'S why they're so angry, because they feared the movie was terrible and now the secret has gotten out a month early.
Can Friedman really be that clueless? Having read his reporting in the past, I have to say yes, he really can be. This is the guy who ranted for months about how awful Valkyrie was going to be, then had the nerve to complain when he didn't get invited to the press screening -- and then put it on his Worst of 2008 list anyway, even though he still hadn't seen it. Friedman is an embarrassment to Fox News (or, that is, he would be if Fox News were capable of being embarrassed).
UPDATE: According to Deadline Hollywood, Fox has fired freelance columnist Roger Friedman.
It was our old pal Drew McWeeny at Hit Fix who brought all this to our attention, and it was his article that elicited a lukewarm response from Fox (and, no doubt, the scrubbing clean of Friedman's offending column). Fox told McWeeny, in part: "[Friedman's] behavior is reprehensible and we condemn this act categorically -- whether the review is good or bad."
That's a great start -- but what else are they gonna do? Friedman did break the law, after all. Fox made every effort to pillory the projectionist who wrote an early review of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2007, going so far as to get him fired, and that guy hadn't even done anything illegal. What will they do about Friedman?
What's that you say? Nothing? They'll do nothing? You say Friedman is a high-profile writer for a major news outlet, and that probably grants him some immunity from any serious consequences? Huh. I wonder if you're right. I guess we'll find out.

Too much fuzz about downloading an unfinished copy. This I don't get from either fans nor studios. I like to see movies and I like to see them finished, good quality after release so I can re watch. What is up with downloading a version of a movie you like in such horrendous circumstances (missing scenes, special effects that are not there, grainy, water marked, etc)?

Dude will be fired w/in 24 hours. If he's not already fired, that is. That's why you don't trust Fox News further than you can throw them... even if they fall in the same "umbrella."

You seem to be operating under the assumption that Fox News doesn't suck... which is clearly wrong. Lol.
Having not watched much of Fox News, I used to try not to judge it. Just because other people said it was bad, didn't mean it really was. Then I happened to watch a bit of it during the coverage of Hurricane Katrina, and one of the reporters (not someone they were randomly talking to on the streets or something) started freaking out and saying how scared she was for her life because they were "letting the prisoners go." I kid you not; this woman was reporting that they were just going to let prisoners roam the streets. What kind of sensational bullsh** is that? I vowed at that point to never ever watch Fox News again.
So yeah, Fox News sucks. Whether it's cliché or not, it's still true. Get over it.

You know, I saw a Daily Show episode where ONE WHOLE SEGMENT wasn't funny! I said to myself, What kind of unfunny bullsh** is that? I vowed at that point to never ever watch the Daily Show again.

We now return you to logic and reason... Oh, wait, this is the Internet... We now return you to self-righteous propagation of lame clichés!

That top 10 worst films list of his baffles me. If he really, truly believes that movies like Cloverfield and Quantum of Solace were some of the worst of the year, then I conclude that he either saw very few films in 2008 or was just trying to bring more attention to his list by having a few out of left-field selections. But Synecdoche, New York?? How dare he! That's inexcusable.

I downloaded it and not in spite of it being an incomplete version but specifically because it was. It was cool seeing random scenes various levels of completion with incomplete or undone color correction and poorly done blue screen effects and visible wires and early drafts of full cg scenes all that stuff. It was like watching a behind the scenes feature on a DVD without the boredom that tends to go along with watching a behind the scenes feature. I know your all upset at him for "missing the point" but it does actually matter whether the movie is good or not. Wolverine isn't a perfect movie but it is good and because of that I think the leaked version will act more in its favor then it will do any harm. Personally I wasn't at all interested in seeing the film in theaters or even renting it but after watching the work print I actually am planning on watching it because I enjoyed it and I want to see the final draft which i didn't before.

"Can Friedman really be that clueless?"
You mean as clueless as insinuating that the FBI shouldn't be tracking down and prosecuting people that steal millions of dollars worth of corporate product and leak it onto the internet for free? Cause saying that the FBI should have better things to do than that is either clueless or stupid. I'm sure if somebody broke into your house and stole your TV and couch that you wouldn't be bitching that the police have better things to do than try and catch the guy that stole a couple hundred dollars worth of your stuff.

Now Friedman learned his lessons: dont mess with Tom Cruise and karma sucks.
I remember guys from Latino Review and many movie sites got zero respect for this guy.
Even Empire defended Cruise from Friedman....
http://www.empireonline.com/empireblog/Post.asp?id=119
Friedman harassed Jolie and Brad Pitt but the two gave in by giving this slimeball interviews so he kisses a$$ to them and raves about their movies. Friedman stalks Cruise even Katie Holmes at Beverly Hills hotels and claimed he had spies on Katie's NY play begging for an exclusive interview and an exlusive on Tom Cruise but Cruise never stooped low so Friedman just rips their personal lives and movies.
This guy is insane.
