Time-Warner Cable Drops FEARnet: Horror Fans Demand Blood
Filed under: Horror, Fan Rant, The Scary Bits
It's no secret that I do film reviews, some silly "Splat Chat" interviews, and a few random set reports for the FEARnet website, but I figure those facts are worth repeating before I go on. So there. Duly repeated. Ahem.Dear Time-Warner Cable / Brighthouse,
You've greatly disappointed a whole lot of horror fans by unceremoniously dropping FEARnet On Demand from your line-up. We humbly request that you reconsider this decision at your earliest convenience.
For the detailed story on what's happening between FEARnet and Time-Warner, I refer you to this earnest plea at the FEARnet website. And then I'll refer you to websites like AICN, CHUD, Slashfilm, Bloody-Disgusting, Cnefantastique, Dread Central, ShockTillYouDrop, Rotten Tomatoes, Spill, HitFix, The Geek Couch, Screen Junkies, and passionate bloggers like Final Girl, The Horror Club, Eternal Vigilance, Horror Fatale, The Horror Geek, Horrors Not Dead, and The Vault of Horror.
(In all fairness to coportate behemoth Time-Warner Cable, they very well could be planning to bring FEARnet back into the fold at any time, which is why I ask all horror fans to make their requests politely and with much civility. This is not so much an "Us vs. Them" thing as it is a "Hey! We like FEARnet more than you think!" thing. Thanks.)
Oh, and just so we all know what sort of stuff is at stake here, I'd happily refer you to this FEARnet page. It offers Fred Dekker's Night of the Creeps in its entirety. Yeah, that's how FEARnet rolls.

I know you've got to be diplomatic about the whole ordeal, Scott, but I do think it is an 'Us vs Them' thing. This past week has proven that Time Warner no longer factors customer interest into their business model. Between this and announcing that they were expanding their pay-by-the-byte ISP plans to several new markets TWC has sent a clear message that profit trumps brand loyalty.
Yes, they may not realize how many people like FEARnet (to be honest, I underestimated it as well; I wasn't expecting how strong a reaction a site even as tiny as HND would get on the news), but even if they had quantitative data to back it up they still would have cut FEARnet loose because it further funnels consumer access to only TWC sponsored content.
The same BS happened a few months ago when TWC refused to renew a contract it had with Viacom, the same contract Viacom made with every other television provider in the states. Doesn't matter how many people watch Comedy Central, Nickelodeon or MTV, TWC was still willing to let the issue go to the 11th hour for the sake of corporate profit.
In a market with multiple options for competition this issue has only risen with Time Warner Cable. Playing by numbers, to me that is Us vs Them. Mark my nerdly words, if TWC keeps up with these cheap practices they will lose customers by the droves, it's already happening as far as their ISP goes, won't be long before people drop their TV package as well.

This isn't the first time Time Warner has pulled a stunt like this. It's getting old.

I'm so tired of horror fans being shafted all the time...it's really starting to piss me off. Horror is quite possibly one of the best genres around if not the best...this is just more proof that the film and TV industry doesn't really give two craps about us. Stop making bad remakes, stop cutting off our horror TV options, just stop! I'm leading a protest and I totalyl don't even care if I'm the only person that's part of it...lol
The did the same thing up here in Canadiana....the dropped shadow lane, which was such an awesome channel, and replaced it with some crap encore avenue junk. The Scream and Space channels are all I have left :(

I sent them an email requesting they return Fearnet to the line-up. I encourage every other Fearnet fan to do the same - bombard their inbox with that request instead of calling and getting on select option 1 or 2 BS and getting put on hold, etc.

C'mon people we need to make these people's lives hell! If you have another option for tv programming, take it! It will only get worse. We nearly lost all the Viacom channels. Can you imagine?

After seeing this, I'll admit Scotty, I'd kind of want to have that, since several of those aren't even available on disc or for rental, and there's also some I've been wanting to see that I just can't (Frontier(s) and Happy Birthday to Me for instance) because of that.
But being on DirecTV, I don't get any of that anyway.

I sent an email to Bright house. I'm very upset because I love Fearnet, it was actually the only channel I watched on weekend nights.
Very dissapointing. Also I think it was very unprofessional that us (customers) got no warning about this situation. I found out just like most of you, trying to watch a horror movie and not being able to find Fearnet. Poor customer service.
I'm extremelly upset about this. My sister and cousin are also sending their comments to bright house, and I hope everyone else, who loved Fearnet does it as well.
Peace.

Fearnet doesn't even matter. I'm a horror fan and I haven't seen anything on Fearnet that even matters. I mean, beyond films that are already available everywhere else. The classics. But what Fearnet offers is just the same old, same old. And their original stuff is just empty blood and guts. And who the heck is this Scott Weinberg who thinks he has permission to speak for all horror fans? I quote the above, "Time-Warner Cable Drops FEARnet: Horror Fans Demand Blood". It doesn't matter to me in the least if Fearnet gets dropped. They aren't giving me anything that everyone else hasn't already given many times over. I think the Fearnet staff should stop trying to make it sound like we TRUE horror fans care about Fearnet. WE DON'T. It sucks and it's always sucked.

Scott - thanks for your post!
I wanted to update all the fans on the Time Warner/FEARnet situation. We've got a "petition" going at the official FEARnet Facebook fan page. We're trying to get 50,000 fans to join and help get the network back on TW. We could really use your help!

Thanks everyone!

I've been a horror fan for a long time,I've seen the classics.I like the fact they have a good mix of old and new.I'm dissapointed because I can't see anything uncut anymore.I'm around 30,I don't need anyone to censor anything for me.I just hope they didn't cancel because, parents where whining.Ding,Ding,Ding, newsflash parents,It's up to you to be the buffer, and not let your kids watch certain things. If you want the tv to be your universal babysitter, use parental control so they can't watch certain channels.Don't whine and ruin it for the people who have every right to watch it. P.S.yes I am a parent
