Travolta Cassidy and the Sundance Cruise?
Filed under: Casting, RumorMonger, Tom Cruise, Western
I seriously love the Daily Express. These guys know how to scheme up a good rumor. This time around, they're going for the ultimate buddy remake. Forget the likes of Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Who'd want those guys when you can have Tom Cruise and John Travolta? According to the gossip rag, Cruise wants to remake the 1969 classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and star in it along with Travolta. Not only that, but Cruise reportedly got the blessing of Paul Newman before he passed on. According to the Express' source, this remake has "been a pet project of his [Cruise] that has been on the back-burner for years. But now he's ready to go, and will most likely happily eschew the enormous salary that he normally commands."
Now I'd love to see Travolta and Cruise as buddies on the big screen. I think they could have a lot of fun with each other. But a Western? One of the most iconic Westerns with two of Hollywood's most notable and critically loved male stars? No thanks. If this is, in any way, true, Newman must have been high on pain meds. And if it comes to fruition, I think we're all going to want to be high on them.
Would you like Travolta Cassidy and the Sundance Cruise?

This is pathetic. Can't they find anything original to do? They have the money and resources to come up with anything - and the best they can do is a remake of a classic.
If this is true, they should be ashamed of themselves and I could see myself swearing off any movie with them in it in the future.

Have you ever gone to the movies and discovered that someone has lobbed a large wad of chewing gum onto the movie screen? At that point it becomes difficult to watch the movie because the annoyance presented by the large flaw on the screen. Misters Cruise and Travolta are becoming like that. It's hard to watch a movie they're in because all their unfortunate baggage. Besides, physically Travolta would have an almost Andy Devine like presence beside Cruise. "Now hold on there Wild Bill!"

You know, generally, these remakes don't bother me so much. Filmmakers want to reimagine things they admire in some cases -- Peter Jackson and King Kong, for example -- sometimes they just want to make a buck. OK, cool. If this particular remake goes into production and distribution, I will be nowhere near any theatre in which it is playing. A remake is one thing; not with these guys. I respect them both, and despite Cruise's offscreen psychosis, I think he's a pretty talented actor when he's "on". I have nothing against John Travolta, I'm glad he's making a comeback. But not via this movie, which I love dearly, and once more, NOT THEM. You want to remake it, get two actors who have as good and evident natural chemistry and charisma as Newman and Redford. Otherwise leave it be.

Cruise and Travolta are nice guys. I dont think of Travolta as talented as Cruise but Im not a fan of remakes by Hollywood.
The only remake I ever liked was Father of the Bride part 1. That was actually better than the original one but again as a whole no more remakes from Hollywood.
PLEASE!

Along with the scenic views of the west, the lovliness that is Katherine Ross and the pure comedy of it, one of the main reasons to watch "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is that Paul Newman and Robert Redford were so damn pretty! That was prime beefcake! Travolta and Cruise? I'm betting even in his current state, whatever that might be, Paul Newman is STILL prettier than either of those two!

FORGET IT. SO SURPRISED AT CRUISE AND ESPECIALLY TRAVOLTA. THEY COULD BE GOOD TOGETHER, BUT NOT THIS. WOULD BE A MISTAKE, A HUGE MISTAKE FOR THE BOTH OF THEM. THEY COULD NOT EVEN COME CLOSE TO WHAT NEWMAN AND REDFORD PORTRAYED ON THAT SCREEN. CRUSIE FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO DO.
BLESSING FROM MR PAUL NEWMAN, WELL THAT WAS THE TYPE OF MAN HE WAS AND YOU SHOULD SHOW YOUR RESPECT AND LEAVE HIS MOVIE ALONE. SOME DREAMS DO NOT COME TRUE AND THIS ONE SHOULD NOT. KNOW WHAT THEY SAY, WHY 'FOOL AROUND" WITH PERFECTION AND NEWMAN AND REDFORD WERE JUST THAT, PEFECTION.

What makes Tom Cruise think there should be a remake of this movie? How can you improve on perfection? Maybe he'd like to remake Gone With the Wind, too?
